Neil Patrick Harris talks with EW about his coming out

neil.jpgVia Out in Hollywood I came across this little item about Neil Patrick Harris. Since he came out three months ago, Harris has had nothing to say about being gay or coming out. (Trust me, we tried to get him to chat.) Whitney Pastornek of Entertainment Weekly finally does get the star of CBS' to open up a little bit. On the topic of being a spokesman for the gay rights movement, Harris says:
As much as I respect advocacy, I don't feel that my job description is 'advocate,''' he says, with a sense of finality. ''My job description is 'jester.'
On why he released the coming out statement that he gave to People:
Someone once said that their life was an open book, but they just didn't want to read it out loud,. 'Everyone at work knew who I was dating, and I didn't try to pretend like I wasn't the person that I am.'
That's all Harris has to say about his private life, and pretty much the extent of his comments. So should the gay community be satisfied with that from him? Or should we expect him to be another Rosie or Sir Ian McKellen? It's an easy answer for me. All I believe we should ask for is him to be honest about who he is and he's done that. I'm glad he is talking about it a little more now and hope as it becomes clear there is no negative fallout on his career, he might talk a little bit more about his private life. On the other hand, I've always had a great deal of respect for celebs who say my private life is my private life. Ian McKellen once told me that he simply refuses to address that aspect of his life because it's no one's business. BTW, Harris will soon be bringing back his character from Harold and Kumar go to the White Castle that is credited with reinventing his career and landing him the role of horndog Barney.
