Farley Granger comes out (officially) Hollywood heartthrob and Hitchcock repeat-offender Farley Granger (most people know him from his passive, gay-tinged roles in Rope and Strangers on a Train) published his memoirs this week, and in them he speaks on the record about his bisexuality and his affairs with Patricia Neal, Arthur Laurents, Shelley Winters, Leonard Bernstein and Ava Gardner (among others -- this guy was busy!).
Rumors about Granger's sexuality have swirled for decades, especially since he appeared in several documentaries discussing gay characters and themes in Hollywood pictures. Laurents in particular wrote about his four-year affair with Granger (Laurents wrote Granger's role in Rope especially for him), so most people assumed that Granger was gay -- it turns out that he is bisexual and speaks openly about it in his book.
Granger follows in the footsteps of Richard Chamberlain, who recently came out after a successful career as a leading man (Chamberlain also recommended that young gay Hollywood stay in the closet, for their careers' sakes -- no word on whether Granger gives out similar advice).
Here's the white-hot climactic scene from Strangers on a Train where Granger and his gay stalker Bruno (Robert Walker) fight on a carousel:

Well, better late then never.
I am definitely getting Farley Granger's book!!!!
The rumours about his 'talent' are legendary.
He loved the boys & the girls.
Good for him.
I hope he has enjoyed his life.
Michael, can you get an interview with him?????
QTC
But I thought he was already out? If you watch the extra interviews on the DVD of "The Celluloid Closet," he clearly states that he's not heterosexual.
