John Waters: The Groom Reaper

johnwaters1.jpgLast night John Waters was the guest on The Daily Show, and was his usual charming, vaguely creepy self -- which I of course mean as a huge compliment. Waters' new show, Court TV's 'Til Death Do Us Part, dramatically retells true-life cases of spousal murder, with Waters narrating as the "Groom Reaper". Pretty sick stuff. Waters touched on a variety of topics, from the Manson Family to body disposal to the upcoming Broadway musical based on his movie Cry-Baby. While discussing the new musical, host Jon Stewart pointed out that Daily Show executive producer David Javerbaum is writing the lyrics for the show. Talk about multitasking! Javerbaum (who is straight and married) is no stranger to gay humor, having co-written a musical called My Gay Best Friend -- looks like he's a great fit for the project. He's collaborating with composer Adam Schlesinger, whom you might know from powerppop group Fountains of Wayne (best know for their hit "Stacy's Mom"). With talent like this on board, Waters might be looking at a second smash Broadway adaptation, following the hugely successful Hairspray. Waters' new show premieres with two episodes on Monday -- it might be just the ticket for those of us who share his macabre sense of humor (or apparent distrust of the institution of marriage). For more about the show, check out the official site.
