Kevin Kline may be keeping house with Paul Dano in film version of "The Extra Man"

FoxNews.com gossip columnist Roger Friedman recently attended an event with filmmakers Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman (American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries), and the directing duo say they’re about to announce a new project that might be of interest to fans of good old-fashioned camp.

Find out more after the break!

Rumor has it that they’re close to locking down Kevin Kline and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) for an adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ 1999 novel The Extra Man, about a young teacher (with secret transvestite tendencies) who moves to New York and shares an apartment with a Noel Coward–esque older gentleman who’s a “walker” for society ladies.

The book involves Manhattan’s cross-dressing underworld, lots of arch humor, and Ames’ usual forays into gay-adjacent-if-not-quite-gay lifestyles, so it definitely sounds like a movie worth waiting for, especially since American Splendor remains one of this decade’s best movies.

And while you’re waiting, check out The Alcoholic, Ames’ first foray into graphic novels, recently published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. There’s a lost-love subplot that gay readers will find particularly interesting.
