Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh: No longer Super?

In a sad development, it's being widely reported that Bryan Singer's Superman sequel appears to be dunzo. Deputy editor of Variety Anne Thompson reports on her blog that it’s "highly unlikely" that the director will be helming the sequel, instead choosing to focus his attentions on completion of Valkyrie (which seems to be facing its own bout of troubles, having its release date pushed from June of this year to October 8th) and prepping production for his Harvey Milk biopic, The Mayor of Castro Street.

While it’s great to hear that Singer apparently wants to focus attention on the rare film with an explicitly gay plotline, as a known defender of Superman Returns and a huge fan of his X-Men films, I have to admit that I was really looking forward to another of Singer’s intelligently handled superhero movies. And as Cinematical points out, it seems an odd choice to bow out of Superman entirely when filming is completed for Valkyrie and Castro Street is unlikely to be a lengthy shoot. Why not schedule for both?

Continuing the tragic news, it has been confirmed that Brandon Routh will not be reprising his role as the Man in Tights (UPDATE: The site referenced has reversed their claim and now refers to their earlier confirmation as a "rumor". Thanks, guys!). It now seems less likely that Supes will be played by whoever gets cast in the role for the Justice League movie, currently in development with a fresh young cast. I still for the life of me can’t figure out why Routh didn’t catch on with audiences. I thought he was pretty great in the role; appropriately befuddled in his Clark scenes, handsome and charming as Supes, and damn did he fill out that costume.

I'm still peeved he left X3

I'm still peeved he left X3 for Superman, leaving the X-Men movie to be destroyed by Brett Ratner.

I hear you...

After X2, I was looking forward to the Dark Phoenix story getting explored, especially since Singer seemed eager to mine that drama as well. Instead we got the dullest and most passive version of what should have been a dynamic character.

I Still Can't Believe They Cast Him.....

Recalling him from his terrible stint on One Life To Live, I wondered what naughty pics Routh had of someone to get the job as Superman because out of the many actors they auditioned, including well known ones, they picked him. He was bad, bad, bad as Superman/Clark Kent and the movie was roundly disappointing as a whole and usually I love Singer's work. But the movie largely failed because of it's lead. Here's hoping they make a better choice the next time around.

''Super'' disappointment?

Is Warner's taking Singer and Routh off ''Superman'' because the film wasn't the mega-blockbuster they had hoped? To be fair to the studio, the movie got good, if not great, reviews, and even Singer said that the sequel would have more action in it.

But I have to wonder if homophobia plays a teeny (if not larger) role. The Advocate did a cover story about ''How gay is Superman?,'' which Singer, who's out, had to refute. And anyone remember the (unfounded) rumor about how Singer was gonna cast an unknown actor who would ''come out'' as part of the director's ''gay agenda''? Routh's sexual orientation became a subject of speculation. Since straight males are the target market for ''Superman,'' I can't imagine the gay buzz helped.

Luckily, Singer and Routh have other movies on their plate (according to IMDB), but it's a shame we didn't have a chance to see where they would've taken ''Superman.'' It'll be interesting to see what they've got to say about this, one of these days.

check the facts again

That link that "confirms" that Routh won't be in the next movie has an update saying he WILL be in the next Superman film. He won't be in the Justic League film, though. Also, Thompson said that it is "highly unlikely" that Singer will direct the next Superman movie. That can be code for "highly unlikely that he won't demand more money to direct the next Superman movie."

Brandon Routh

should have been hired for the Christopher Reeve story, not Superman. He seemed like an actor playing an actor playing Clark/Superman. There was no chemistry with the audience. If he has acting ability we didn't see it on the screen.

As some who adored Superman and Superman II...

...I found Superman Returns to be a HUGE disappointment. It wasn't just the casting, though Brandon Routh lacked charisma and Kate Bosworth was hopelessly miscast as Lois Lane (too bad they skewed young: co-star Parker Posey would've been PERFECT as Lois); it was the fact that the movie tried too hard to be "serious" and "respectable" rather than just have fun with the material; and the repetitive nods to dialogue and situations from the first film grew tiresome.

Brandon Routh Rules!!!

Brandon was a perfect choice as the man of steel. He had a cute and boylike quality about him. Tha movie was a bit too long, but overall enjoyable. I think the director could have focused on his body a little bit more. Gay people love Superman, and Bryan singer who is also gay should have caught that. I will look forward to seeing Brandon in the next Superman Movie. Also, who did Brandon Routh play on One Life To Live? I don't recall his character. Can anyone enlighten me?
