Our eight favorite bisexuals ever.Since 1999, Celebrate Bisexuality Day has been observed on September 23rd. In light of the occasion, we thought we'd honor our bisexual brothers by making a list of our favorite male switch hitters ever. It was hard narrowing this down to just eight, so if there's someone you particularly admire who wasn't included here, please be sure and mention them in the comments. 1. Michael Stipe
Michael Stipe officially came forward about his sexuality in 1994, when he described himself as "an equal opportunity lech." Stipe has said he doesn't define himself as gay, straight, or bisexual, but that he was attracted to and had relationships with both men and women. 2. Alexander the Great
Alexander III of Macedon lived from 356–323 BC. He might have married Roxanne and fathered a child with her, but his greatest relationship was with lifelong friend Hephaestion, and towards the end of his life he fell madly in love with a eunuch named Bagoas. 3. Alan Cumming
Alan Cumming was married to Hilary Lyon from 1985 to 1993. He was married in a civil ceremony in 2007 to graphic artist Grant Shaffer. Oasis magazine once asked Cumming why he preffered "bisexual" over other possible labels such as gay, straight, or pansexual. Here's his reply:
4. Jai Rodriguez
Queer Eye's culture guy spoke with AfterElton.com back in 2006 and here's what he had to say about his orientation...
5. Billie Joe Armstrong
Armstrong identified himself as bisexual in a 1995 interview with The Advocate:
6. Brad Davis
Davis sadly died in 1991 from an intentional drug overdose after a six year battle with AIDS. He left behind a wife and daughter, though Boze Hadleigh's book Hollywood Gays includes an interview with Davis in which he acknowledges having had sex with men. When asked if he considered himself bisexual, he replied "didn't someone once say that everyone's bisexual, deep down?" 7. Gregg Araki
Araki self-identified as gay until 1997, when he began a two-year relationship with actress Kathleen Robertson. Bisexuality is a theme in many of his films. 8. Leonard Bernstein
The celebrated composer and conductor was reportedly bisexual during his early years in New York. He married in 1951 (on the advice of a mentor who felt it would enhance his professional prospects.) So that's our list of favorite bisexual men. Who would be on your list? Submitted by on Wed, 2009-09-23 10:59. |

Marlon Brando, maybe? Or James Dean? Or Anthony Perkins?
Coupla good-looking 1950's guys who did a lot for leather jackets. :) Brando was quoted as saying that "like many, I've had homosexual experiences, and am not ashamed." (He used to room with Wally Cox when he was starting out.)
James Dean had an affair with actress Pier Angeli, but it's unclear how much of it was real and how much of it was studio PR. On the other hand, he definitely had numerous liasons with men, and when asked once if he were gay, reportedly responded "Well, I'm not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back."
Anthony Perkins might (MIGHT) make the cut, considering his long marriage to Berry Berenson, which produced the handsome and talented Oz (Osgood) and Elvis Perkins. However, he apparently was in therapy much of his adult life trying to deal with his sexuality, so perhaps he was more a closeted-actor-tries-to-make-heterosexuality-work than a genuine bisexual.
OMG, I had no idea Michael Stipe was such a beautiful young man. He looks like a Michaelangelo angel.
Brando claimed Paul Newman was bisexual
He suppposedly had an affair with James Dean and Brando.

I like this list
Afterelton does a great job of being inclusive of bisexual men. I like Alan Cummings' quote. It sums up pretty much how I feel :)
Too inclusive
We have Jai quoted in this very article that he, himself, thinks he's gay, not bi even if he has had occasion to be with women. That is not a bisexual man.
You also included Brad Davis who made a nebulous comment (context known) when asked but never said he was bi, never said he slept with men, and it is something his widow has denied and complained plagued their lives (perhaps because of his gay role or having been HIV+, though an IV drug user) all while he openly admitted his infidelities with women to her. I think it's at best tactless to include him on this list.
Such questionable claiming of deceased people in the name of "visibility matters" is a repulsive behavior I wish the LGBT community would cease doing. There are plenty of uncontested LGBT persons of note that you don't have to go about claiming historical figures based on mis-applied sensibilities or those for whom "evidence" is little more than a whisper campaign.
DH Lawrence is interesting...bisexual?
I've been interested in DH Lawrence for the past two years...ever since his sexuality was brought up in a class.
It's hard to label the sexuality of historical figures because you have to take into context the era they lived in and what the expectations were for men during that time.
If a man gets married but has affairs and sex with men, I don't think it can be assumed he was bisexual just because he was able to have sex with his wife. In the case of DH Lawrence, he claimed the closest he ever came to love was in his youth with another boy...he was also rumored to have had a relationship with a farmer. The marriage just could have hinged on expectation.

Yay, all my brethren in a
Jai Rodriguez seems to be a stretch...
to have on this list, if he considers himself to be gay? Going to straight clubs and having had sex with a woman doesn't necessarily make you bi.
"Open up your mind and then open up your heart. And you will see that you and me aren't very far apart." - Blessid Union of Souls
What's the line
from Lisa Kudrow's character Lucia in "The Opposite Of Sex:"
"I went to a Bar Mitzvah once - that doesn't make me Jewish."
I´m sorry, but the fact
Nah
I used to sleep with women many years ago. I really wanted to be straight. Being gay was against everything I was brought up to believe and it was a real bastard when it came to my religious belief. But even though you know it's not right at every other level of your being, you can still have sex with a woman. For me it was a case of concentrating on the part of the woman I liked (for me it was the breasts) and then conjuring up whatever else I needed to be hard-ish so a kind of penetrative sex can take place.
At no point did me having sex with a woman make me straight or bi. I'm gay but I know how to have sex with a woman in a technical fashion. I liked the intimacy and I loved the skin-on-skin thing, but despite having had sex with women, I'd never want to do it again: it's hard (sometimes) work.
I don't understand bisexuality but I know it exist. The only thing I do know is that sex is complex - and there's a major difference between how the body responds and how the person responds.
When I was struggling with
When I was struggling with my sexuality years ago, I went to see a specialist. I liked the theory he put forward. Orientation is best looked at in terms of fantasies. If you almsot never fantasize about women, you're most likely gay. If you fantasize about men and women, you are most likely bi. If you only fantasize about women, you're heterosexual.
Latley, I've stopped referring to myself as gay or bisexual. I'm homoflexible. Sure, I'm gay, but stuff happens ;-) (I first heard that in 'Were The World Mine').
Homo is where the heart is...
You sexuality is more than where you stick your dick...it's about who you can give your heart to. I could easily have sex with Megan Fox, I just couldn't actually have a relationship with her. I'm totally gay.

I question the choice of word ONLY
I find women attractive and there have been women that I've thought of as sexy. I seem to have an attraction to a certain part of the female anatomy, and I've had sex with a woman (once, it was very situational and not something I would do again.) I'm 100% gay. So, you can't say being gay ONLY means being attracted to the same sex, as that's just not true.
I'm not questioning anyone saying they are bisexual. I'm not anti-bisexual or saying it doesn't exist. I didn't question anyone on this list. I only question the fact that he himself stated he considers himself gay, so why include him on a list of bisexuals? I would take his word for how he classifies himself over someone else's who is basing it on the fact he's been with women and goes to straight clubs.

Huh? Since when? That would
Jai just said...
About an hour ago (today) Jai was on Derek and Romaine and he labeled himself gay. So who knows where he actually falls in his own head.

why would he by choice have
Mika and Duncan James
Ok, so they may not belong on the list, but I still think they deserve an honorable mention. They both came out as bisexual this year.
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Didn't know Duncan James was bi
Article about Duncan's bisexuality

I remember reading later that he labeled himself gay in interviews after this...so not sure if he was just using bisexual as a stepping stone or if he's casual with the labels.

hmm...
"but I don't agree with gay men who are completely horrified by a woman, or the idea of sex with a woman, or the idea of a woman's genitals. That's just not been me. In a way, I think it's wrong to close your mind off."
^ I'm not sure i agree with this. all i am gonna say is that back in the day when i did stuff with guys, i always felt gross doing it. i dont think men are disgusting, but i feel no sexual attraction towards them whatsoever...and when i do, it's a very rare case and they always happen to be men i know i will never ever freaking have.
it just felt wrong and unnatural for me to fool around with guys. I actually don't like the sight of a penis, but then again, i am not attracted to that. nothing about it gets me going. I don't think that makes me close minded. if it does, then hey...close minded be I
I think
I think that for a gay person, having sex with someone of the opposite sex can be more intimidating than for a straight person to do the same with someone of the same sex; the reason I think that is that they are not only doing something that goes against their natural feelings, but they are also dealing with body parts that they don't have and are not used to have around.
This list should be "our nine favorite bisexuals ever" and have Mika on it. ;)
I agree (in reverse :))
True That
I understand why if you're bisexual it's hard for you to envision someone else not being able to see what's sexy, arousing and beautiful about female AND male bodies.
But that's why I also don't buy the "love the person not the gender crap".
Human beings are hard-wired to be arroused by whatever arrouses them whether it's male body parts, female body parts or both. If you have a romantic and sexual relationship with another human, some part of you has got to be REALLY into their actual body parts, not just their wit or talent or good-hearted nature. ;)
Humans are attracted to bodies, smells, the tactile sensions of the flesh as it were.
I think in the rush to make us all feel equal and not oppressed we've developed this language that denies the "sex" part of sexuality.
Being gay, bisexual or straight isn't ONLY about the act of having sex but when it comes down to it, what separates us at our foundation is completely about sexual attraction and inclination and arouasal and there is nothing wrong with that.
You can fake the emotions or even convince yourself you have them but 9 times out of 10, the body tells the truth on you.
I'm not even remotely bisexual but I don't get grossed out by opposite sex bodies parts, they just don't turn me on even a little bit.
I can see what's beautiful about men and women or even what's sexy about men and women (like I can appreciate beautiful flowers and adorable kittens even while I'm deathly allergic to both)
I think when you are completely comfortable in your own skin and your own sexuality and sexiness, you don't feel the need to be so OTT vehement about how much other people's sexual inclinations or proclivities "gross" you out.
I don´t think he was saying
Happy Bisexuality Day
Happy Bisexuality Day to all my fellow bisexuals! : )
cheers,
Shauna!

Thanks You Guys at AE
for recognizing the day. When I came out a few years, I didn't know there was "Bi Pride" until someone brought it up in a meeting that was a bi flag. What?!! We have a flag?!! We have colors?!! How cool is that!
I really don't know why there aren't more bi characters on TV or in the movies. The story possibilities are endless.
Enjoy the day!!

Good on you guys/gals
Hi Guys,
After years of lurking I just created an account so that I could come and say thank you to the staff and the posters on AfterElton. AfterElton and AfterEllen are my favourite gay resources largely thanks to the inclusive and non-snarky tone they take to bisexual issues. I often go off and read some queerty.com but the comments that go on in their forums and the lack of editorial moderation just make me cringe and I think I'm going to have to break out of that habit. Since Mika came out this week there has been an ongoing bi-bashing going on in the comments that had really dishartened me because, having spent so much time on the great AE, I just wasn't expecting that kind of negativity, I'd grown bizarely use to polite and rational discourse.
And for all the kinsey 6 and 1's out there can I say that I agree with you that Alan Cummings was not correct in saying that you all are closing off your minds. Whether he meant it that way or not I don't know. I think a lot of quotes from bisexuals end up in an accidental way denigrating some aspect of the gay identity and I know you guys can find them off-putting, eg. I don't love the gender, I love the person; I'm just more open. But can I say that this really is often unintentional and usually much more of a botched attempt to help straight people understand the situation. I completely see where it's anoying and unfair though. I try and avoid saying such things and I really respect the polite and respectful way you have argued with Alan's point on this thread.
Joe Jackson
Joe Jackson ( the singer ... Steppin Out, Is She Really Going Out With Him ) is another stated bisexual. I'm a fan of his musical genius.... Any one that can do Rock/Pop/Classical/Jazz and do it well is a genius!!
More Bisexuals
Yay!
I'm so glad Billie Joe made the list! He is infinite hotness.
Wasn't Montgomery Clift bi? I've heard conflicting reports. If so, he should totally have been on here. So beautiful, so talented...
"Go, or go ahead and surprise me." -- Rufus Wainwright
Monty Clift...
i'VE HEARD he was gay. in fact, i read somewhere that Elizabeth Taylor confronted him about it. (or was it rock hudson? i think it was montgomery, because they were close friends) I've heard that he really hated himself for being gay. a lot of self loathing.
anyways, for you, here is a photo:

Happy Belated Celebrate Bisexuality Day
My list:
- Brian Molko
- Patrick Wolf
And then Alan Cumming, Micheal Stipe, Billie Joe Armstrong, Greg Araki, David Bowie would all continue the list and I sure I am forgetting some people right now (and admit I am excluding anyone that has not commented on whether they are bisexual/other-lable-but-still-into-males-and-females - just for the sake of simplicity).
