After "Noah's Arc," the flood: "Finding Me" brings more gay men of color to the screen

As long as there has been a Hollywood, movie companies have tried to build on the success of their rivals. Call it the "This studio needs one of them there Bible-musical-gangster-war-monster-surf-biker-disco-vigilante-superhero pictures" syndrome.

And with Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom scoring high per-screen averages in its first two weekends in theatrical release, don't be surprised to see the other big gay film distributors working to emulate the success of Logo Films' debut feature by seeking out movies about queers of color.

Case in point: TLA Releasing announced Wednesday that it has acquired all North American and Caribbean-basin rights to Finding Me, the first film from Haitian-American director Roger S. Omeus, Jr. This gay, black romantic comedy tells the story of Faybien (RayMartell Moore), who has to juggle a homophobic dad (Ronald DeSuze) and a possible new relationship with studly Lonnie (Derrick L. Briggs).

Finding Me is set for a Spring 2009 release, by which time we may find ourselves in the midst of a whole new wave of black gay cinema.

Hmm, a flood?

A "flood" of new black (or, for that matter, any ethnicity) gay cinema would be certainly welcomed by me, but I suspect it will be something more like a small stream. Or a trickle.

Don't get me wrong, I_want_ to see more diversity in queer cinema, I truely do, however...remember when we thought 'Brokeback' would see a tangible change in the cinematic landscape?

But back to this article: I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled for more info on 'Finding Me', thanks for the heads up!

How strange the sound

Even a trickle is refreshing ...

... when you're thirsty for diverse gay entertainment.   But I'm hoping for that flood.  Yes.  Sounds good to me.   And I've been waiting to see 'Finding Me' for a long time.  Looking forward to it.

Please edit

I truly hope TLA edits/reshoots this film before its release.  It has potential, just needs some work.

Here's an idea...!

...why don't they just release Punks on dvd already!!!!!!  What reason on earth could they have for not releasing this movie?  Don't they want us to buy it?
