New on DVD: "Big Love" Lives Large, NPH Goes Bananas

One of TV's best shows is about to up its gay quotient—are you ready? Plus, Neil Patrick Harris in a role that will surprise you.

Read on for more!

HBO's Big Love comes from gay creators and has always worked some interesting gay subplots throughout its tale of Bill Henderson (Bill Paxton), owner of a chain of Home Depot–ish stores who just wants a peaceful life with his three wives.

The upcoming fourth season will see a closeted religious leader seeking "ex-gay" therapy—and finding a boyfriend—but you owe it to yourself to check out Big Love: The Complete Third Season before you dig into the new episodes that start on January 10. The third was the best season of a series that's been consistently excellent, and so much drama goes down you'll be left with jaw agape. Seriously. Watch this.

Neil Patrick Harris—to whom I must give credit for apologizing to Kevin Smith for an interview in which Harris bad-mouthed Smith's compadre Jason Mewes, and which somehow became an issue in this website's Gay of the Decade poll, now unofficially subtitled "There Will Be Blood"—contributes the voice of a talking monkey to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

In a less-stellar year for animation, Meatballs would definitely have stood out from the pack, but up against instant classics like Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up and Ponyo, it's merely charming and entertaining.

Way down on the animation scale, but still catnip to those of us of a certain age who watched the show on Saturday mornings, is Super Friends: Season One, Vol. One. It just better have that episode with the G.E.E.C. computer and the mouse and Plastic Man, is all I'm saying.
