New on DVD: Hippies, Hot Boys and Brilliantly Tasteless Humor

Return to Woodstock, meet some cute shirtless boys and laugh it up with a pioneer of envelope-pushing comedy, all new on DVD this week.

Read on for more!

Lightning didn't exactly strike twice when Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee gave us another gay protagonist in Taking Woodstock, a disappointingly tame comedy about the nice Jewish boy (played by Demetri Martin) who helped facilitate the world-shattering rock concert. Despite some entertaining supporting bits — particularly from Liev Schreiber as a cross-dressing former Marine — the movie never quite takes off. Still, it was one of the few major 2009 releases to feature a queer leading character.

Lucky Bastard is the latest from gay director Everett Lewis, whose previous efforts include The Natural History of Parking Lots, Luster, FAQs and Skin and Bone. His tales of angsty emo homos with tight little bodies aren't everyone's cup of tea, but if you're a fan of this film fest fave, you'll certainly want to check out his latest.

Two filmmakers deserve the lion's share of the credit for introducing shockingly vulgar (but always brilliantly hysterical) comedy to American cinema — one is John Waters, of course, and the other is Mel Brooks, who once claimed that his films rose "below vulgarity."

The nine-disc gift set The Mel Brooks Collection features Blu-Ray editions of some of his finest and funniest film work including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Spaceballs, To Be or Not to Be, Silent Movie, History of the World Part I, The Twelve Chairs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. The collection features loads of extras, including an exclusive book, documentaries, deleted scenes, an unaired pilot for a Black Bart TV sitcom and much more.
