Out on DVD: Randy high-schoolers, ground-breaking TV and drag on film
Two terrific, but very different, teen movies with gay appeal make their DVD debut, alongside tributes to sitcoms that changed TV and actors who changed gender wardrobes on the big screen. Read on for more!
One of the sleeper queer hits of last year was the sweet and sexy musical Were the World Mine, about a prep-school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that opens the floodgates of repressed sexuality when the gay boy (Tanner Cohen) playing Puck discovers his love potions work as well off-stage as they do on. From the chorus line of rugby players to the magical couplings in a Shakespearean forest, Were the World Mine is a delightful and dreamy movie for your next date night.
On the opposite side of the spectrum is the raunchy T&A cheerleading comedy Fired Up! One of the film's more pleasant surprises is that the movie is smart about its gay characters (of which there are several) and even avoids treating the women like dirt, a rarity in this genre. The film was somewhat hampered by its theatrical PG-13 rating, but with this "Unrated" DVD, they get to go a little wilder.
The sitcoms of Norman Lear were a lot wilder (and, occasionally, queer-inclusive) than TV was used to — the leap from My Three Sons to All in the Family was a staggering one, and the new Norman Lear Collection DVD box salutes such classics as Maude, The Jeffersons, Good Times and much more. Much of this material has already been sold separately, but if you've been slow to snag these classic TV shows on DVD, this box makes the perfect starting point for your collection.
The folks at Starz Inside bring us another entertaining and informative documentary with Ladies or Gentlemen, a look at the history of cross-dressing in American movies. Interviewees include actors who've done it (Tim Curry, Tony Curtis, Henry Gibson) alongside cultural commentators like Michael Musto, John Waters and Camille Paglia.

"Were The World Mine"
Were the World Mine - Awesome
I got to see this wonderful film (Were the World Mine) at Philadelphia's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and it was simply wonderful. Just got it from Netflix yesterday. Highly enjoyable and a very well done movie given its indie status. Rent it if you can. There was only one part that needed work. I'm not going to spoil it for you but it had to do with a girl performing at the end. She shouldn't have played the song that she did unless the producers had to put it in there in order to sell the movie. Regardless, it is a top notch movie that you will enjoy.
Wonderful?
We watch it and were appalled by how awful it was especially as a reimagining of Shakespeare. I like some camp, comedy and musicals but not this one.
Maybe you just have to be a certain kind of gay to enjoy the film.
The short on which its based it more tolerable and focused although the singing could've been better there.
I really thought the addition of the adults' storylines distracted from the core story.
Saw it!
