New on DVD: Pedro and Lucy
This week's new DVDs include looks back at two TV pioneers—a gay man with AIDS who made everyone in America feel like they knew someone fighting the disease and a small-screen legend in two specials that have been unavailable to fans for more than 30 years. Read on for more!
The made-for-TV Pedro makes its way to DVD this week, boasting a script by Milk Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black. It could be argued that both films slightly suffer from the impossibility of finding an actor to be as charismatic as the real-life person depicted—especially when that person has been extensively captured on film in real life—but Alex Loynaz takes a valiant stab at portraying Pedro Zamora, the AIDS activist whose stint on MTV's The Real World made him one of pop culture's most visible gay men. The film definitely benefits from producers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (Quinceañera) and their knowledge of the inner workings of reality TV.
Two small-screen spectaculars that have spent decades in the vaults make their way to the shelves this week. The Lucille Ball Specials features Lucy Gets Lucky and Three for Two, featuring TV specials (co-starring Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason) that have gone virtually unseen since 1975. Ball fans won't want to miss this new release, which also features a documentary, radio interviews and rare Lucy footage. Submitted by on Wed, 2009-07-01 10:54. |
