New on DVD: TV faves, old broads, classics on Blu-Ray

New TV collections on DVD let you get caught up on your favorite shows during rerun season while new Blu-Rays run the gamut from the sublime to the explosion-y.

Read on for more!

The Comic Book Guy finally gets his moment in the spotlight on the cover of The Simpsons: The Twelfth Season, which features great moments like Homer becoming intelligent (after they take the crayon out of his brain) and The Who reuniting Springfield after the town is torn apart over the introduction of a new area code. If glam and horny teens are more your speed, there's Gossip Girl: The Complete Second Season, while Michael C. Hall continues to carve up his victims with the best of intentions on Dexter: The Complete Third Season.

Even though the made-for-TV These Old Broads wound up not being as fun as it should have, given its cast (Shirley MacLaine, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, Debbie Reynolds) and writer (Carrie Fisher), it's still a noble effort and worth checking out as it hits the New Releases shelf this week.

Every week sees more Blu-Ray titles hit the market, and they run a pretty wide gamut. On one end, Criterion offers a Blu-Ray release of Jacques Tati's exquisitely hilarious Playtime, a satirical meditation on the chilly impersonalness and bland repetition of the mechanized, high-rise–riddled post-WWII landscape. It's a movie that really needs the big screen to let its subtle visual jokes play out—Tati shot it in 70mm—but if you've got a kick-ass home theater system, it's the next best thing.

In another universe from Tati is The Last Starfighter: 25th Anniversary, an energetic little sci-fi movie about a trailer-park teen who discovers that the videogame he has mastered is actually a recruiting tool for an alien race that desperately needs the kid's joystick skills to vanquish their enemies. It's one of the final screen appearances of the legendary Robert Preston (The Music Man, Victor/Victoria) and a fun little cult item.
