Nicholas Hoult: From "Boy" to "Man"

Nicholas Hoult, who went from being the young star of About a Boy to a studly, bum-baring young adult on BBC America's Skins, has joined the cast of gay designer Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man.

Colin Firth

Reuters reports that Hoult will play a sexually-ambiguous grad student who has a flirty relationship with a gay professor played by Colin Firth (above). Based on the novel by gay author Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man will also feature Julianne Moore (as a friend of Firth's character), Matthew Goode (as the professor's deceased lover) and Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin (as a friendly neighbor).

Since Hoult has had no compunctions about going bare-assed on Skins, the possibility exists that Ford can get a little birthday-suit action out of him on the big screen.

They do grow up so fast these days.

As I believe I've mentioned before ...

A Single Man is Isherwood's masterpiece. I sudder to think of how Tom Ford might toally ruin it. But the cast is good. Colin Firth will make a good Isherwood anti-hero, Julianne Moore is perfect as the friend who quietly has the hots for him, and young Hoult should be perfect as the flirty student who practically throws himself at our hapless hero.

A Single Man was written at a time when Chris thought he and Don were kaput. Overcome with sadness he said were Don to leave him it would be as if he died. Then he thought about what his life might be like if Don really died. And this the novel -- which is set pirncipally in Santa Monica Canyon whewre they shared a home (and Don still lives.)

Everyone should read the book immediately.

And yes, it WILL be on the final!

Great Choice

Nicholas Hoult has become a total hotty and I have great faith in Tom Ford's ability to transition into a film direct.  I suspect it will not only be well acted but stunning to l ook at too.

Brits are braver

Can someone explain to me why it seems that young British and Canadian actors don't have to same qualms about playing gay as their American counterparts?
