Out at the Movies: "Confessions of a Shopaholic," "Friday the 13th"

You expect queer content from a chick flick, but maybe not so much from a slasher film. This week's new movies give us a little of both — read on!

While the kooky costumes from lesbian Sex and the City costumer Patricia Field will no doubt be a big draw for gay audiences who want to check out the problematic Confessions of a Shopaholic this weekend, keep an eye peeled for the character played by funnyman Stephen Guarino of Logo's Big Gay Sketch Show.

He plays Allon, the receptionist for the magazine company that winds up hiring heroine Rebecca (Isla Fisher), and he pops up again later to provide her with even more assistance — think of him as the gay-us ex machina of the movie. (And seeing him behind a desk reminded me of his amusing "supercilious airline employee" character from BGSS.)

A reboot of Friday the 13th also makes its appearances in theaters this weekend, and while the series has always been one of the queerest of slasher franchises, this new one includes Aaron Yoo — seen recently as one of the gay bandmates in Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist — as one of the teen meat puppets who makes the mistake of venturing to Crystal Lake. If you're a fan of this sort of thing, you might actually dig the new adventures of hockey-masked Jason Voorhees.
