Out at the Movies: "Watchmen," "Phoebe in Wonderland"
Yes, the long-awaited Watchmen finally hits theaters this weekend, but if messed-up superheroes aren't your cup of tea, there's a terrific alternative this weekend. Read on! Watchmen, based on the legendary graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, hits the big screen this weekend, with director Zack Snyder (whose 300 was simultaneously homoerotic and homophobic) cramming as much of the original comic into the movie as he possibly can. (Mind you, this isn't always a good thing.) Matthew Goode as Ozymandias What's gay about it? Well, the opening credits include a shot of superhero Ozymandias (Matthew Goode) hanging out in front of Studio 54 with Mick Jagger, David Bowie and the Village People while, in another, Andy Warhol and Truman Capote check out Warhol's painting of Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson). The movie also implies that its villain (who I won't reveal for those who haven't read the book) is probably gay (and a pederast—he has a secret computer file marked "Boys"); oh goody, another one of those.
It's also worth noting that Watchmen, unlike recent films like Beowulf or Death at a Funeral, doesn't leap through hoops to avoid putting a penis on screen, so there are lots of shots of Dr. Manhattan's (Billy Crudup) big, floppy, bright blue dong. (We also get a lingering shot of Wilson's glutes, which also made arresting appearances in Little Children and Angels in America.) Elle Fanning and Ian Coletti But while Watchmen is getting all the hype for the weekend, a little movie worth seeking out is Phoebe in Wonderland, starring Elle Fanning as a young girl losing her grasp on reality while she stars in a school production of Alice in Wonderland. The terrific cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Felicity Huffman and Bill Pullman, but many scenes are stolen by young Ian Coletti as Phoebe's friend Jamie.
Jamie unabashedly auditions for the role of the Red Queen, and he's super-fierce in owning the part once he gets it. (When a bratty little girl spits "Homo!" at him, he immediately retorts with "Homo got the part!") He's a poster boy for young drama-club queens everywhere. Submitted by on Thu, 2009-03-05 15:54. |

Watchmen
Can't wait to see Watchmen. I'm so excited for this movie, have been waiting months! I already ordered the tickets.
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Watchmen
Count me in as going to the Watchmen also. I remember when the series was first printed. It was nothing like any other comic published then or since. As for the gay subtext you pointed out I remember thinking that the villain (no spoiler) also seemed gayish but as it was just insinutated, it is left up to the readers imagination. The whole series was purposely a comment on life in the 80's and it should be looked at that way. I will be at the first showing of it tomorrow!.
Yeah, I also felt that the
Yeah, I also felt that the villain seemed kinda gayish in the comic book, but that never phased me much. Alan Moore, the writer, has been pretty clearly gay-friendly in the past and even within Watchmen there are other positive gay characters so I felt that the villain's sexuality was incidental to his villainy.
Whether Snyder takes the same approach though, well I'll be queuing up to find out.
What's cool is that things are left open
A few minutes of googling showed speculation on Rorschach being a major closet case, Ozy being one of Hooded Justice's flings, the gay Minutemen being at the Italian restaurant...
This was my fave tho' http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/485797 It's much funnier if you've read the graphic novel and have some familiarity with 80s toons
I saw watchmen today
and i noticed lots of gay bits. At the beggining, when all the superheroes are sitting at a table, there are two male superheroes holding hands and one caresses the other's hand. One of them is clearly a lesbian (one of the minutemen) and there are other gay moments that are kinda plot-revealing, so you have to see by yourselves hahaha.
I feel like the only person on the planet...
...who doesn't care about Watchmen in the slightest. Blithe Spirit on Broadway with Angela Lansbury, which I saw last night, on the other hand...now that was exciting!

Actually
The book is a comment on human nature, ethics and morality; it just happens to take place in the 80s. The work is as relevant now as it was then.
And the fact that it got critical acclaim from literary circles for its depth and complexity should tell you that its more than kiddie stuff.
Oh wow. I saw the Watchmen
Oh wow. I saw the Watchmen film yesterday, and I had thought that the "Boys" folder was just my imagination. Thanks for confirming that it wasn't! It's a silly place to put a folder like that though, might I add.
Also, was it just me, or did you guys find Ozymandias' German accent a little bit off? I sort of cringed a bit when he started talking to Dan in it..
The special effects were pretty cool, but I still think the comic is better. Haha.
Considering Ozy models a
Awesome movie
I really enjoyed thios movie. It was entertaining and lived up to my expectations.
I liked the fact that it was dark, but it was so over the top, people even started to laugh during some of the more violent scenes.
The music was perfect too. I gotta buy the OST for Watchmen!
The gay bits vere cute too. The only "big" gay scene I can remember were the two lesbians kissing at the beginning though.
The only negative things I can remember were the long intro, and some of the acting was a let down.
I really liked the movie though, a solid 8/10 from me!

wow... not what i was expecting
**spoiler (i think)***
i have never read the comic book so i wasn't expecting it to be cerebral... i did enjoy it though... i just didn't expect it to be more of a dramatic film (although i knew it was very political) than a comic book popcorn movie.
first it was semi-naked spartan men (and the naked gay fave gerald butler) in skimpy loinclothes with washboard abs... now gratituous shots of blue penises (and the naked gay fave patrick wilson)...... is Zac Snyder playing for our team? he seemed obsessed with the male anatomy. :-)
You just got the same reaction
You just got the same reaction must people get when they are exposed to this work for the first time and the reason why it was so groundbreaking at the time.
BTW, nothing you saw was gratituous for the movie, almost everything you saw is in the book, nakedness and violence included. Oh jeez, of all the thing they had to leave out.
