Out at the Movies: "Wolverine," "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past"
It's classic Hollywood counter-programming, with one big movie this weekend aimed at boys and the other at girls. But while I would argue that neither X-Men Origins: Wolverine nor Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is great viewing for either audience, both of them have a little something to offer gay viewers. Read on to find out what!
Stretching the premise of A Christmas Carol beyond recognition is Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey as a womanizing rake taught the error of his ways by a series of spirits, including that of his late Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), an old-school lech of the Robert Evans school. (Wayne likes to use words like "sissy" a lot, but then he doesn't believe in seatbelts, either, so he's clearly trapped in a Rat Pack mindset.)
There is, at least, the chance to see the dreamy and talented Daniel Sunjata (who memorably played gay on screen in Brother to Brother and on Broadway in Take Me Out) as McConaughey's rival for Jennifer Garner; suffice it to say the one I was rooting for doesn't win. One of Ghosts' few memorable gags involves a male bartender clearly impressed with McConaughey's way of sweet-talking the ladies; after one filly dashes off to McConaughey's room, the drinks-slinger asks, "Wow...do you think that would work on a guy?"
As for Wolverine, what it lacks in characterization, plot, dialogue, decent direction and quality special effects it somewhat makes up for in sheer beefcake. Not only do we get to see Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber grunt and flex at each other a lot, but we also get lots of Ryan Reynolds sleevelessness and some sleek bad-assery from Eurasian former model Daniel Henney as Agent Zero (not to be confused with Patient Zero). This girl went to the boys movie
...and I loved it! I thought Wolverine was jam packed with action, drama and beefcake. Plus there's a nice romance. No, it didn't stimulate my mind, but hey, I had other things on my mind while watching Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds run around pumped full of testosterone. Lets just say stimulation occured elsewhere.

Wolverine
My best handbag girlie-type friend (who happens to be as big a sci-fi AND Hugh fan as me) and I went to see it friday night. It's stupid and corny, but it's nice to see Hugh doesn't appear to be resorting to surgical help of any kind to fight back the years. Every wrinkle suits him.
I think we both left a little moist. Hugh and Liev. Mutton-chops. Nufff said.
Who did the airbrushing on the 'Girlfriends' poster?
Wolverine
I'm going to take issue with your review of Wolverine. I found it extremely entertaining (which is what a movie is supposed to do). The plotting is decent (not great) and has a few holes - but it's escapism so it's allowed. As for the eye candy in the movie.. Where's that up arrow ... ohhhhh yeahhhh. It's up all right.
I'm sure the DVD will also have some outtakes that will make up for a few things like too little screen time for Dominic and fill in a few of the holes. The effects were decent (again not great - but I'm not going for effects ). As an old time Comic fan who remebers buying the Incredible Hulk when Wolverine first appeared I've gotta say it was well done.
McConaughey Redux
He may have taken the title as "The Most Shirtless Man in Movies" but ask yourself, is that talent? He is more like the male eqivelant to the trafitional "dumb blond". He is in clear danger of having a one note career. Think Sylvester Stallone, not Harrison Ford in this case.
That's all I am saying...
