Out on DVD: A family-friendly queer fave and a romantic comedy about gay men of color
Lurie Poston and Michael Emerson (Lost) in Ready? OK!
Whatever genius at Amazon.com who decided that everything queer is automatically "adult" should try watching the delightful comedy Ready? OK!, which makes its DVD debut Tuesday. The film reminds us that gay identity has to do with a lot more than sex.
Plus, Haitian-American director Roger S. Omeus, Jr.'s Finding Me hits shelves today.
Read on for more!

One of the most acclaimed films to play the gay and lesbian film festival circuit in 2008, Ready? OK! tells the story of young Josh (the engaging Lurie Poston), who wants more than anything to become a cheerleader. This is a youngster with no inkling of a sexual identity, but let's just say that, on the day that his Catholic school has kids show up dressed as their religious heroes, Josh wears a Maria von Trapp curtain ensemble.
Dealing with Josh's non-conformity is just one more item on the overstuffed agenda of his mother Andy (Carrie Preston, Duplicity), who's already got her hands full as a single mom and harried assistant to a vain local TV news reporter (the hilarious Kali Rocha). Lucky for Josh, he's got lots of friends and family in his corner, including his uncle Alex (John G. Preston, Carrie's real-life brother) and his understanding gay neighbor Charlie (Lost's Michael Emerson, Carrie Preston's real-life husband).
Ready? OK! is about a kid who innately understands who he is and about what has to happen for the adults around him to all understand and love him for it. It's a movie for any gay man who grew up pining for a pompom or a Malibu Barbie, and one that every parent of a "different" child should see.
RayMartell Moore and Derrick L. Briggs in Finding Me
Also hitting DVD today is the gay, black romantic comedy Finding Me. The movie tells the story of Faybien (RayMartell Moore), who has to juggle a homophobic dad (Ronald DeSuze) and a possible new relationship with studly Lonnie (Derrick L. Briggs).
