OutTunes: Brett Every's "Prince Charming"

Over the years, I've made my positive opinion of out Australian singer-songwriter Brett Every perfectly clear. The artist's own description of his music is spot-on: "Kinda like Norah Jones getting drunk with Tom Waits while praying to the spirit of Dusty Springfield."
The truth is, Brett Every is very much his own musician, as you can see and hear in this trippy music video for "Prince Charming," a track off his recent album Fairy Godmother's Gone to Vegas.
Check it out after the break, along with my brief Q&A with him, where I got a chance to ask him what he's doing in that naked guys's shower!
AfterElton.com: Hey, Brett! The last time we spoke, you didn't have a music video, now you do. What happened?
Brett Every: Well, I must credit a few very wise friends who persuaded me to shoot a video. I'm so glad they talked me into it. In the beginning, I was at a loss as to how we'd create a visual experience that would match the audio experience of the song, but as soon as Byron Quandary came on board as director, the ideas began to flow and the whole project
took shape more as a short film than a typical music video.
It was very exciting to see it come to life, because it has added a whole new dimension to the "Prince Charming" song.
AE: How did the idea come about, and what are you doing hiding in that guy's shower?!
BE: We really wanted to zero in on our main man chickening out and not taking a chance with his Prince Charming. The song really is about taking a risk and giving romance a chance - essentially, saying yes instead of no. So the idea really came from the concept of undoing his silly decision, or 'rewinding back' to that point when our guy made
the foolish choice of turning Prince Charming down.
And my lurking in his shower really isn't as creepy as it sounds! We just took the traditional idea of the angel on your shoulder whispering advice in your ear, to a whole new level. And you wouldn't believe the high-tech, state-of-the-art stagecraft that was involved in the magical moving of his shower curtain!
AE: What was the most difficult part of the shoot?
BE: Making sure that the red rose landed in the whipped cream required extraordinary levels of precision and skill! And unfortunately three chocolate buns were harmed in the making of this video.
But seriously, I must say it was fantastic working with Byron - he's an amazing filmmaker. And both of the actors in the video were great too. I'm thrilled with how it's turned out.
AE: What's up in the career since the last time we spoke? How's the new CD (which, for the record, I loved) been received?
BE: I've been so happy with the reviews for Fairy Godmother's Gone To Vegas. It's strange, because you work away at a record for 6 months or so, and then you release it out into the world and wait to see how it fares. So it's great when it your work gets the thumbs-up.
Good news is rolling in at the moment - I'm getting booked in for a few Pride shows in the US and Europe for mid-2010. So I'll be heading over your way in June - I'm playing Milwaukee's PrideFest on June 13 and a few other shows too along the way before heading to Europe in July.
So I'm really looking forward to that - plus, I get to trade a
Southern Hemisphere winter for a Northern Hemisphere summer.
