ATWT video clip update: I saw no one kissing no one
Someone put up a sprig of mistletoe out at the Snyder farm, and apparently dimmed all the lights. (Was it just me or did Nuke's big scenes today seem especially murky?) Fortunately, Luke and Noah did find the mistletoe ... but unfortunately, so did the cameraman, who found the plastic bit of festoonery tacked above the pantry door more interesting than our beloved teen couple. When the two moved in for their much-anticipated first kiss in months, we were treated to this:
We've been very impressed with the way the show has handled the Luke and Noah romance thus far, and to be fair a good amount of screen time was dedicated to the two having emotionally candid and uncommonly insightful conversations (for teens, much less soap teens) about their relationship. But given that the two have been a physical nonreality as a couple for months (while it seems like half of the other characters on the show are pregnant), it does look like the couple is being treated differently because of their sexuality. We contacted the show today about this and As the World Turns' publicist responded with the following statement:
Let's hope not.
Anyway as for the other highlights in today's show... Luke spends most of the episode hobbling around with his cane or doing wheelchair wheelies underneath the mistletoe. Finally Noah shows up with a Hallmark Christmas card that says he lurvs Luke. Hey, at least he cares enough to send the very best.
To see this and more, check out today's Nuke video clip, which appears after the break. For more details and a lively conversation in the comments, you can check out my increasingly indignant liveblog from earlier today. You can find earlier Nuke clips, liveblogs, and other fun stuff over on our ATWT Resource Page. Submitted by on Thu, 2007-12-20 17:02. |

The Kiss
Good for you guys
Thanks for contacting them and passing on their reply. The problem is, the complaint is not about a "lull" in screen time, but a deliberate (and homophobic) double standard when it comes to Luke and Noah and the countless other heteroseuxal couples who only care about trying to kill each other or make babies. not only that, but the whole "pan to the mistletoe" thing seemed like a purposeful slap in the face. Jake and Van are playing these roles with such integrity and conviction. They deserve better.
Don't we have to deal with enoughanti-gay crap in the rest of our lives? We have to lose oneof the very few bright spots we have these days.
Here here!
That's Not an Answer
I think it's wonderful that AE contacted ATWT. But the answer they provided is NOT an answer to the real question. Today's episode was not a lull--it was the payoff for months and months of angst. And, within that episode, that kiss was the climactic moment. And they pulled away from it to show mistletoe!
If Luke and Noah can never kiss onscreen again, the show needs to be honest and tell us so. Teasing us week after week--and even teasing us within episodes--is just cruel.
I'll take "Artful Dodgers" for $500, Alex.
Uh, What about the Writers' Strike? I have heard that ATWT has enough scripts until the middle of January. Has this changed? Are Soap Opera writers exempt?
I think this is an obvious attempt at a dodge. CBS KNOWS that the Writers' Strike will last longer than January, they are just playing for time.
Moving on, We should all thank Brian for all that he has done with the Liveblogging and contacting CBS. Thanks Brian.

Correction
ok, here goes....
"As The World Turns fully supports the Luke and Noah storyline. We have exciting story planned for the couple that will begin airing early next year. As soap opera fans know, there is an ebb and flow to storylines. While Luke and Noah may currently be in a lull, they won’t be for long."
^ excuse me while i scoff a million scoffs.
as a soap opera fan, i also know that whether the show is ebbing or flowing....we still get to see some kissing...there will always be some romance going on...even if there is a mass murderer around....there is always one couple in the show who is either 1.) having a fun adventure mixed in with romance trying to find said mass murderer or 2.) cuddling, kissing and yes, even having sex with said killing spree happening in the area....(i have been watching GH way too long)
so, the panning away from the kiss has NOTHING to do with the freaking "ebb and flow" with luke and noah. if that was the case, then i hope they can explain the sweet talking and gazes. after all, 2 guys were once again professing love to each other.
If freaking clark gable could say the word "DAMN" in a time when that language was not even heard of...unheard of in the movies that is...then i daaaammmmmn well know that a harmless kiss between two guys is not going to shatter the earth or the ratings...but it shatters my head, because i hate headaches from feeling that I, as a viewer am having my intelligence insulted. Last time i checked, this show wasn't called "As the world turns: Queer as folk edition" - - so whoever (PGB OR PGP OR WHATEVER) is telling CBS to pan away and shy away and basically insult all the fans...well, they have another thing coming...we're not stupid. at least, i am not. so yes, that is what i DO know about soap operas and i also know that they are some of the MOST loyal fans out there...but if you screw with them, they will not be happy and i can easily just say go to vanhanis.net and my example will be made quite clearly.
that's all.
Just so you know, I specifically asked about today's kiss
Afterelton is my favorite
Thanks, Michael!
Thank you so much, Michael. AE is the best. Good luck and thanks for continuing to fight the good fight.
If you get any inkling as to what, if anything, fans can do to influence the powers that be, you'll let us know, right? Little birds have been saying it's Procter and Gamble, but who knows how much they are paying attention.
What is so strange is that I haven't heard about any sort of organized protest/campaign from the right. And you KNOW how much they love an organized protest - the likes of which I could see convincing CBS, etc. to tone down the gay. Did I miss something?
Here is what you can do

I'm officially angry.
It was a really sweet episode, but to pan away from the kiss was a horrible thing to do, both in terms of the story and the clear homophobia on display--any other str8 couple we would see them kiss, but because it's two young men, it's something that has to be hidden? Ridiculous and offensive.
In fact, in terms of today's episode, showing the kiss between Luke and Noah would've added so much meaning, coming as it would after Holden and Lily and then Holden and Bonnie restrained from kissing under the mistletoe.
I think I'll be shooting of an email to ATWT and CBS.
Pissed off!
I hate to sound rude but why did AfterElton wait THIS long to contact ATWT about this non-affection issue? This has been going on for a long, long time...not just today.
They need to stop telling us that they treat Luke and Noah like any other couple. It's a f***ing joke and not true in the least!!!
Nuke Kiss
Here's a phone number to call & complain. .718-780-7075. An actual person answered, & when I told her why I was calling, she said they had received MANY calls complaining that the camera (& TPTB) wussed out of the kiss. The number is in Brooklyn, NY. It's an ATWT/CBS number.
What a shame

No comparison
Of course we're not going to see Queer as Folk on As the World Turns. We all know that and we don't expect it to be like that. But you can't tell me it's too much trouble to see a kiss once in a while even if it's a little peck. This is plain ridiculous.
Doing the best they can? I emphatically disagree.
As an on and off viewer of ATWT for over 20 years (mostly on), I think I've gotten a pretty good idea of when the show is doing the "best it can within the constraints of the daytime television medium," or when it is being run to the ground without regard for its long-time viewers. It is also pulling a switch and bait with the new viewers who came to the show via the introduction of the Luke Snyder character and his subsequent pairing with Noah.
During her tenure as head writer of AWT, Jean Passanante and her staff have managed to destroy almost every single one of the show's core characters and have turned Oakdale into a misogynistic and bipolar mess. Surprisingly, Luke has generally been spared her wrath, as the worst that he’s gotten (besides being paralyzed – how appropriate) was not showing him at all. I liked what she did with Luke’s crush on his best friend Kevin, as it started testing the waters with both a gay storyline and what the viewer response could be. Then she introduced Noah, who came in with sorts of expectations from the audience as Chris Goutman, Executive Producer, told every single entertainment outlet that Noah was being brought in for Luke.
While I was not a fan of the Maddie portion of the Noah introduction, it's hard to be a Monday-morning quarterback as the original storyline was supposed to include Maddie's then boyfriend Casey, who was instead sent to the slammer when his portrayer decided to leave the show.
So after way too much Maddie and Noah for my taste, we in essence got a series of limited but telling scenes with these guys accidentally running into one another's personal space. I loved those scenes. Then came the amazing choreography of Luke and Noah’s post swim almost kiss (which may be the hottest scene to air on any show this year) and then we got the amazing kiss, again staged so well as to maximize both sexual hunger and tenderness. T
he audience (both gay and straight) went nuts seeing these two as they served as such a contrast to the boring musical chair sexual gymnastics and general hatred exhibited by others characters on the show. These two were the real deal and the viewers rewarded the show runners with higher ratings, which moved the show from the lower tiers of all daytime dramas to the highest tier. The tie-in between Nuke and higher ratings is measurable for anyone who wants to take the time to break it down. The strength of this duo is not only highlighted by their consistent number one status on most polls of publications that most of us had never even heard about (Daytime Confidential?), but also due to the fact that even the peak of the show’s other “explosive” storyline-focused plots (Carly’s “death” sentence, Katie and Brad wedding, and Cheri’s shooting) failed to do anything but lower the ratings. It does not take a genius to see what people are liking or not.
Today’s episode (in my opinion, even with Sofie…Yawn) was one of its strongest showings in ages as it actually had Luke’s parents being civil to one another and showing some of the razzle dazzle that made me fall in love with them 20 years ago, injected a cuteness factor with Vienna and Henry tiff (even a puppy for grim Oakdale), and showing our boys for more than 5 minutes. The almost kiss that was interrupted by Faith and Natalie (go away!!!!) it the beginning was actually cute to as it was universal. Annoying if the characters never kiss, but still… Then Luke walks (what an awesome soap moment and I mean in the best way), Luke and Noah have their parlor dialogue. Corny but I’ll eat it up because these two are like little puppy love in many respects. And let’s not forget the lustiness that pops out of Luke’s eyes which give almost anything he’s given a potent undercurrent. Van Hansis should put the champagne on ice as that 2008 Daytime Emmy is his.
Then we get even another scene with these would-be lovers (in surprisingly low lighting, but given what happens on the show this is but a foot note). While I wish that Noah would not be written like a 10 year old, who can argue with Luke’s sweet and downright sexy monologue which was culminating into the best scene that these two have had since they were first shown kissing. Luke’s “I am in love with you” had me in love with him/them. Had the show just sent the boys on their merry ways without putting them under the mistletoe, we could be complaining about wanting them to kiss, but to actually have them kiss and treat the actual moment as if it were bestiality or something worse was a stab in the heart of any soap fan. This is the same show had the Jack character raped onscreen when his nutty ex-wife gave him a Viagra cocktail as he was tied down on a chair and she lowered herself on to him. Confines of the genre? There are few…..
Doing their best? Not by a long shot!!!! If they were shown kissing, I am 100% certain that we would not be complaining that they are not naked and in bed. I do expect them to go there, but the nudity could be implied. I don’t want to see Queer As Folk on CBS daytime nor expect what is shown on pay channels, but I think that you could be grossly underestimating not only the gay fans of the show, but the audience as a whole. We can get our porn fix elsewhere.
This to me is about honesty and the show reaping the benefits of what it thought may have been risky when it first contemplated it a year ago. The pre-kiss seductions are much “sexier/racy” than any lip on lip action. No one is picketing the show. It’s receiving praise from sources that never even address daytime and mid-America has spoken. But just like they continue to destroy Carly (once the shows best bad girl and now just a doormat), they also refuse to listen to listen to the vast majority of the viewing audience, as they seem to think that by keeping the audience from what it wants to see, it will keep it coming back for more.
They have lost me with the exception of the Luke days, and not simply because of not showing him but because the show is a hateful mess. There is not a source that has not said that Luke and Noah are the exception to the lousiness that ATWT has become. Being “realistic” is to expect that the show runners will use what the audience has told them they want to see and to deliver that on a daily basis. Luke and Noah are not controversial. Even if it were, an actual kiss to me would be less controversial than the extended sweet/hot dialogue that these two got. If there is another stakeholder that we may want to address, it’s Proctor & Gamble as they deliver the show to CBS based feedback with CBS; however CBS is buying this show not making it. ABC produces its own shows.
As gay men, I think that we would do ourselves a huge disservice to accept crumbs without serious questioning. Most get that the CBS’ response to today’s question was BS. The AfterElton team asked a specific question on our behalf yet it can’t control the answers it receives. The fact that they are even taking ATWT to task (and willing to do more) is a big deal as any access and relationship building that it might have worked on could be completely cuff off. But they went and are going for it.
Those of us who want to see and think that we deserve more airtime to Luke and Noah and further development of their love story, need to take ownership of this matter and try to use our own unique ways of trying to bring attention to what we expect. It’s ok if some think that what is shown on the screen is the best that the show can do under its constraints. I want to push hard to have them verbalize what the heck these constraints are, and put it on the line to get dialogue going, which would bring even more attention to this show.Any excuses should come from the show, not us.
The genre is on its last legs and the shrinking ratings are proof of that. Those who don’t follow these matters may be happy to know that ATWT is the show which has lost the least number of viewers of ANY other daytime drama. It reached an all-time low May (as others are still testing new lows) but even the most frustrated viewer seems to have stuck around waiting for a love story of any kind. At this stage, I think that the only way to change the status quo is to dump the head writer. I’d take EP too. I’d then focus on the person who’s been doing the break-down writing for Luke and Noah to see if they could bring that to the rest of the cast. This genre lives and dies on character development. I want to see all of Oakdale (including Luke and Noah) falling in love and having real challenges. While I am thankful that Luke and Noah have not been treated like the female character had sex 6 times with two men in less than 24 hours, it’s not enough.
If it were up to me, I’d rather have our two men shipped to Wesleyan (like poor Maddie) than seeing them like best buds, not seeing theri affection, or appearing less than the almost mute Natalie. The kiss pull-away………..I assert that if there is a problem that will lead to the cancellation of this show is not Luke and Noah, but continued disregard for ALL fans, not just the gay ones.
Great response
Wow, thanks for the great response. It is very informational and interesting. I wasn't aware of any of that. I don't watch any of AS THE WORLD TURNS except for the Luke and Noah story line and have never watched any American soap before. (The only other soap I ever watched was Coronation Street when Todd and Karl were having their romance; that was 3 years ago.) Yes, it certainly does seem like the show is not living up to its promise to treat Luke and Noah the same as other characters on the show. I do wonder how much negative response the gay story line and same-sex kisses have generated. If the show gets it from both sides, from the homophobes for showing it at all and from us for not showing enough, could they be tempted just to get rid of Luke and Noah altogther?
I also love the lustiness that Van Hansis brings to some of the lines that are written for him. It's like he's trying to break through restrictions as best he can. And it also seemed in this episode like the show itself was trying to break through restrictions that have been placed on them by higher powers that be - by letting the characters kiss even if someone (Procter and Gamble?) has forbidden them to actually show it. Corporations can be super-cautious. Remember when some right wing nut group thought that P&G's corporate symbol - the moon and stars - contained some subliminal sign of the devil - and boycotted P&G until it was changed?
I want more out of Luke and Noah than what we're seeing, too. But I struggle with between much to thank them for having the story line in the first place, and griping at them that it isn't enough. Even with the frustrating limitations, I find it enjoyable and I watch. Perhaps that is mostly a tribute to Van Hansis, who is doing such a terrific job.
How about both?
But I struggle with between much to thank them for having the story line in the first place, and griping at them that it isn't enough.
I just don't like the idea that we have to be careful not to rock the boat and be happy with what we get.
I don't think anyone is
Puzzling...
This is what I find puzzling...as bad as the 'Passions' storyline was, they did show the two men kiss and in bed together, and I honestly can't remember any outcry. Also, I haven't heard of any right winged groups up in arms about Luke and Noah, not even after both kisses aired, on the contrary, it was applauded, so this is very strange what is taking place with the Luke and Noah story. It makes me wonder, as i've already stated on the other thread, whether conservatives are running the show at ATWT and CHOOSE not to show affection or kissing between Luke and Noah. I'm almost certain gay men or women don't have a say in this storyline, as in production and writing, because if they did i'm almost certain this wwouldn't be happening, we would have a far better love story going on.
This is such a shame, because what started out as a postive storyline as turned into something that appears to be guided by homophobia. No wonder Van urges viewers to call PGP. I feel sorry for both Van and Jake since they both seem like they were willing to give it their all, but are quite frankly being disrespected.
CBS has DEFINITELY toned
CBS has DEFINITELY toned down the physical affection since the storyline first started. Remember, we had the "shirtless accidental hugging" scene, the kisses and now nada. This reeks of religious right interference.
Thanks for the links. I just sent CBS a piece of my mind. Can't believe how stupid CBS is for not promoting this storyline and really going for it. There are a lot more new viewers they could be pulling if they'd get with the program.
What the.....!
It certainly seems as if

Poor Noah
Poor Noah/for Michael
I feel for you. You have plenty of time so make sure you know what you want. You don't have to come out to everyone. You can choose to tell only people you feel comfortable with. How you express affection in a family is always unique to that family. For mine it is natural to say I love you and to hug. However I don't think that you have to say " I love you" to someone to prove you love them. Your actions are more important. Noah may not be able to say the words to Luke but he is trying so hard in other ways that his love for him is obvious. Luke understands and accepts this, at least for now. You can spend time with your dad and treat him with love and respect and he will know you love him. It is up to you to find the courage to say "I love you" and to say it in your own time if that is what you want.
For me one of the hardest things to deal with when you come out is that you think people will start to analyze your past behavior and worry that you were sexually attracted to them. So you worry that any display of affection might be miscontrued as sexual. You just have to accept that it may happen and there isn't anything you can do about it unless they come out and ask you. It was almost always easier for me with most women. I think it is because I didn't feel I had to prove my masculinity.
There is movie I love called "The Object of My Affection". In this movie a woman is in love with her gay friend and he is in love with a guy who is living with a much older man. The older man doesn't have a sexual relationship with the young guy but he is in love with him. There is a scene where they have Thanksgiving dinner all together. The two guys go off together and leave the young woman and the older man together. They are both in the same situation, they are alone. The older man tells the woman "don't fix your life so that at the end of it you find yourself alone". They shut out everything else in their lives for other people. They forgot about their own needs. So even though you have time don't too long to decide what you want.
Something tells me that you will be okay.
Things Could Have Been A Lot Worse
For everyone who was upset about the kiss that wasn’t, remember that it could have been a lot worse. First off, I wouldn’t say that I was upset, but rather really disappointed about the non-kiss, but keep in mind, this was an episode that feature Luke and Noah showing genuine affection towards each other. As a viewer of day time for most of my life, I can tell you, this pretty much unheard of. I mean who didn’t cry or at lest had tires in their eyes when Luke read Noah’s card or when they gave each other that moving speech underneath the mistletoe. Listen we had two male characters on a national television show actually tell each other that they love each other!! This is huge!!!!!
So yeah, there wasn’t a kiss which believe me sucked. But don’t let that take away from this amazing moment. I don’t know why the powers that be decided not to show them kissing, but remember we live in a straight man’s world. A world where gay visibility is pretty much barely there, completely absent or extremely negative, it’s refreshing to see a show provide us with two completely well developed gay characters. Who, by the way, has never been bashed like General Hospital’s Lukas.
ATWT would have very easily gone the gay bashing route, but they didn’t. They couldn’t have given Luke a storyline with real meaning and depth, but they didn’t. They could have made a character with no real tides to a major family gay which would later be written off, but they didn’t. What they did do was gave us amazingly real (even for daytime), well written, extremely well acted, storyline. And I’m for one, am truly grateful to them and look forward to seeing what they have in store for our boys in the new year. So just remember, things could have been a lot worse!
