A new "Fame" is coming. Will it live forever?
The original cast of Fame takes over NYC. Carnage ensues. After years of lingering in pre-production limbo, the long-awaited remake of Fame will finally start filming next month. As with the original, released in 1980, this Fame 2.0 revolves around a group of young students at the High School for the Performing Arts in NYC. An it'll be interesting to see how closely they follow the first movie and its roster of arty kids. Like all overly-dramatic teenagers, they insisted on making big production numbers out of everything, even lunch. They also struggled with the usual teenager problems, and for the unfortunately named Montgomery MacNeil (Paul McCrane), that meant coming to terms with his sexuality. He was the film's only gay character, and as such, was obliged to have a tortured soul before eventually gaining a more positive outlook. In the cast of the new film, there's a character listed as a "gay dancer" named Kevin (Paul McGill) (baby ... remember that name). Will he be defined by his sexuality, or will it be just another part of his personality? And more importantly, if the new movie goes to series like the original, will he be de-gayed again? Speaking of "de-gayed", former Heroes star Thomas Dekker is in negotiations to play one of the lead roles. No word on what the character is like, but we can probably assume he'll be straight. What do you think? Is a Fame updating a good idea, or has the evil juggernaut known as High School Musical rendered it moot? Submitted by on Tue, 2008-10-14 14:20. |

A Fame Remake Seems Redundant
...when you have films like:
Center Stage
Bring It On (and its sequels)
Camp
You Got Served
Stomp The Yard
Step Up (and its sequels)
High School Musical (and its sequels)
I remember being super-pissed...
...when Montgomery was de-gayed on the tv version of Fame (before being dropped from the show altogether.) As it was, the role was shrunken down-even when Gwen Verdon popped by as a guest star, playing his mother. I did like Paul McCrane in the movie (even the songs he wrote for it) and his oncreen friendship with Maureen Teefy and Barry Miller. (The triumvarite was also dissolved in the series.)
As for a re-make-probably not necessary.
Baby, look at me and tell me what you see
Given the diminishing returns of the 'Fame' franchise (movie good, tv series bad, stage show terrible) I don't have high hopes for this version.
Even worse, remaking the movie makes me feel very very old.
Let me get this straight
In a movie about a school for the arts set in New York city there will be only one gay character, correct?
NEXT!!
Why?!?!
The only thing that came to my mind when I saw this headline was.... WHY????
Maybe they should do like 90210... and just bring the storyline back today instead of remaking the story.
ohgodno.
shoot me now.
(BTW: what ever happened to all those castmembers in the TV series from the 1980's? Guess someone pulled the life-support plug on 'em; so much for wanting to live forever. LOL!)
could be good...
not a big fan of remakes but this one might turn out to be okay. i read that the cast includes up and coming music artists and a 17 yr. old music producer named "21 the Producer". a fresh angle on the musical aspect of the film could turn out to be pretty cool.
