The year in Pop!: A look back at the Pop! Quizzes of 2008

Over the last year we occasionally ran reader polls (under the heading Pop! Quiz) asking you, the gay/gay-friendly/questioning/curious entertainment-going public, how you feel about certain current events and pop culture phenomena. 

With the year behind us and a clean slate ahead, I thought I might dredge up the results of some of these polls and lay them out here to be enjoyed and considered.

Quiz: What was the best men's movie costume of all time?

Folks voted Daniel Craig's square-cut trunk-a-dunks from Casino Royale as their fave, followed by Jack Twist's Brokeback flannel shirt (by a very narrow margin, I might add). Not so popular? Bruce Lee's black karate pants in Enter the Dragon. 

Quiz: Daily Show or Colbert Report?

Half of respondents said "they're both dreamy!" while the difference was split nearly down the middle for each of late night's gay-friendliest talking heads. 

Quiz: What's your preferred name for the Luke/Casey fauxhomance on ATWT?

Overwhelmingly, fans had their "Cake" ... and ate it up, too! 

Quiz: Who do you think the gay character will be on Gossip Girl?

Eric pinged the gaydar 4-to-1. Can't slip nothin' past you kids! 

Quiz: Do you have your own blog?

Half of readers said they have no blog of their own, and no one said they have a blog about sports. 

Quiz: Are you thinking about getting married more than you were a month ago?

Half of the respondents said that they were looking at marriage differently following the California gay marriage ruling (the good one, not Prop 8!) and the wedding ep of Brothers & Sisters. 

Quiz: What's your take on "hot tranny mess"?

Half of respondents thought that the flap over Christian Siriano's "hot tranny mess" catchphrase was much ado about nothing, with only 16% saying that they find the phrase offensive and would never use it. 

Quiz: Who would make the best soap couple?

40% of you like the various soap couples just the way they are, thanks very much. Least popular? Noah (As the World Turns) and John Paul (Hollyoaks). 

Quiz: How much would you pay to see Madonna?

30% of you "wouldn't turn around" to see Madonna live, but another 24% would pay anything, including vital organs. This can only be settled one way: Vogue-off! 

Quiz: What kind of gay are you?

Following the NY Daily News' insipid article on "new old gays", 40% of you said that you're the kind of gay that uses the NYDN to line your cat box. Straight-up "old gay" got the fewest nods, with only 9%. 

Quiz: When should "openly gay" be part of th story? 

Nearly 60% of respondents only feel "openly gay" should be mentioned when it's relevant to the story, as in the case of Matthew Mitcham's historic win at the Olympics. 22% felt that it should only be mentioned if the subject's personal life is being discussed, and only 4% answered "only if the gay in question is cute". 

Quiz: What did you think of the gay jokes in the Lance Bass roast? 

40% found the "roast" of Lance Bass on the Dancing With the Stars finale "offensive", while 35% found it merely "meh". 

Quiz: Are you calling in gay? 

44% of respondents said that while they would have liked to have participated in "Day Without a Gay", it simply wasn't practical for them. Only 3% responded that they were participating and volunteering ... although hopefully that number is low because some of the folks participating were out doing good in their communities, not surfing the Net!
