ABBAcalypse Now: "Mamma Mia!" set to take the world by summer storm

If it has seemed that this summer is a bit dry when it comes to gay or gay-friendly films, things are about to get very hot, very wet, and very loud...

Yes, the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! (itself a stage adaptation of about 20 years of pop songs by the Swedish supergroup ABBA) arrives in theaters next Friday, and it brings with it plenty of chilled cocktails, bronzed skin, and sand and the faint scent of Bain de Soleil.

The flick, which of course boasts stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and History Boys vet Dominic Cooper in its central cast, is all about sun, fun, and romance, and the pics from the various premieres that it has been enjoying around the globe show that the cast looks to be having as much fun promoting the movie as they had making it:

I saw the movie last week and liked it ... but for the full review, you'll have to check back next week. We'll also be discussing exactly why it is that the film is so very gay ... and no, it's not just because it's chock-a-block with ABBA songs and has a lesbian director, Phyllida Lloyd.

For now, enjoy!

A guilty pleasure

ABBA certainly is one of my top guilty pleasures, so I'm definitely gonna check this one out when it premieres. As if the mere fact of watching Streep do these over-the-top musical numbers wasn't tempting enough!!!

Sucks that they left out one of my favorite songs though...

"The Greek word Eros denotes want, lack, desire for that which is missing. The lover wants what he does not have. It is by definition impossible for him to have what he wants if, as soon as it is had, it's not longer wanting."

Which one?

I noticed that "Knowing Me, Knowing You" was missing (at least I don't remember hearing it - they do smash in quite a number of songs) and "Fernando" as well ... although I can't really imagine how they would have worked a song about the revolution into a wedding plot!

One of Us

LOL, you're right about that!

But no, the song I was talking about is "One of Us". Although "Knowing Me, Knowing You" is also a glaring omission.

I heart ABBA

This is the one summer movie I'm truly eager to see. I was a HUGE fan of ABBA in high school (and you can just imagine how cool that made me seem.) In fact, as soon as I found out one of the characters was named Harry, I knew that "Our Last Summer" was gonna be one of the songs in the score. (Oh, and Harry, played by Colin Firth, is the gay guy.)

Oh I Heart 'em Too

Plus I worship the ground Meryl Streep glides so effortlessly over. And there's babe-a- licious Dominic Cooper too.

So fascinating that music that was meant to be disposable pop fun has lasted so long -- with no sign of ever letting up.

Now dig this! ---
