Cute alert! The many adorkable faces of new gay Portland mayor Sam Adams

Mayor Sam Adams

Okay, I'm not usually one to fall for the political types but I'll be damned if Portland's new mayor Sam Adams (the first openly gay mayor of an American city of that size) isn't sweet enough to put on a plate and sop up with a biscuit.

Granted, I know nothing about this guy's political platform and yes, he does look like what would walk out of the wreckage if Dwight Schrute, Morrissey, Peter Krause and that guy that's always on Whose Line Is It, Anyway? were in some horrible pileup, but for now let's just admire, shall we?

"Strike Beard" Sam

So which is your favorite Sam? I think "Strike Beard Sam" and "Dirty Sexy Money Sam" are my faves.

I heart Mayor Sam...

...it's people like him that make me proud to be a Portlander.

BTW his partner, Pete Zuckerman (a reporter for the Oregonian newspaper) is pretty adorkable himself.

A man worth voting for.

Definitely Dirty Sexy Money, Sam.  Is he married BTW?

That's all I am saying...

He referred to the guy to

He referred to the guy to the right in the bottom picture, Peter Zuckerman, as his boyfriend during a speech. The Oregonian newspaper called him his "partner". I thought that was just so typical. As if it were too risque to use the word "boyfriend" in a news article when the man himself used the word. At least they didn't say "friend" or "longtime companion" !

As for his politics, he's know around city hall as being a policy wonk and some what pushy. He's a really nice guy though and I couldn't be prouder that we elected a gay person as our mayor and especially about the fact that his sexuality was a complete none issue in the election. He won by a very large margin too. He was the best candidate and he deserved to win.

Incidently he has been involved for a few years in a "divorce" from his previous partner who he was with for many years. The two of them have been using the separation to challenge the the Oregon public retirement system over same sex couple rights. It shows what kind of guy he is that he is willing to use something personally painful to try and help the gay community.

I fail to be outraged with you

Jay, I fail to see your reason for outrage here. I've attended several of Sam's speeches and worked on his campaign for a week. SAM calls Peter his partner. At one press event a reporter asked him how he likes Peter to be referenced and how Peter was handling the campaigning. Sam called him "partner".

Partner actually elevates the relationship in the eyes of straight America.

I hate the euphemism

I hate the euphemism "partner". I refused to call my boyfriend my "partner", even though we lived together, shared finances, etc.

Oddly, I remember a female columnist talked about this...

She was of a certain age where "boyfriend" didn't seem appropriate, but couldn't think of another word if they weren't married.  Joy Behar talks regularly about Steve, the guy she's been with for 20 years; he's definitely past the "boyfriend" stage. "Partner" thus seems to imply a non-married relationship of some length and durability.

However, "boyfriend" is definitely sexier--as this writer (wish I could remember who this was...Anna Quindlen?) said, "A partner picks you up in his SUV, a boyfriend puts you on the back of his motorcycle."  :)

Either way, as a proud resident of the Rose City 'burbs, I'm thrilled to have someone with Sam's smarts and integrity (AND his devastating good looks) representing us.

Was he with his partner at the time?  If so, I'm not enamored one bit.
