AfterElton Briefs: The "American Idol" closet, the trouble with gay plays, and more!

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • If you (like me) missed Cheyenne Jackson's cabaret show, this positive review will hurt all the more. Favorite line: "He noted that he began in summer stock with the Carrousel Players in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he 'slept through all seven brothers' in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."
  • The LA Times says that American Idol needs to open the closet door. Either that or it needs to close the other door, open a window, and jump out, hopefully landing on a sundial and impaling itself so that its reign of terror can continue no further.
  • Out filmmaker Paul Etheredge (who brought us the first gay slasher, Hellbent) has an interesting new project that's just been released: An online action series starring Zoe Bell (Grindhouse) and Lucy Lawless (Xena) called Angel of Death created by comic book writer Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Captain America). Check out the series here and an interview with Lawless about the project over here.

  • Above, 365Gay News reports: The musical Rent is now being licensed for high schools, and some are questioning whether the material is appropriate for young actors and audiences. And in related news, a stage adaptation of Alex Sanchez's The God Box by a gay-friendly church was shut down by the Archbishop of San Francisco.
  • And finally, Brazilian voice-dubbing artist Marco Ribeiro, who has supplied the Portuguese voice-over for Sean Penn in such classics as All the King's Men and 21 Grams, is refusing to do the job for Milk, because he is a pastor and it does not feel comfortable even providing the voice for another guy who kisses James Franco. Also, his replacement, Alexandro Moreno, "does a much better Gay Long Island Jew."

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

Cheyenne's Concert at Feinstein's

Was very entertaining though I think next time he should select some better songs, not just songs from shows he's been in. He hasn't been cast in the best shows though he always shines in whatever he's in. He certainly had everyone in the audience, male and female, in the palm of his hand. His comments working with the various divas in Aida were particularly funny. I will definitely sign up for his next concert--he's going to be back at Feinstein's in June but not by himself.

Hate to say it...

...but I think I'm the only person on this board who is not a Cheyenne fan. i actually find him quite overrated. I saw him in Xanadu twice and thought he was the weakest one of the leads, playing the least challenging role. Don't love his voice, either. And find his smile rather creepy and smarmy. ::shrugs::

Hey, I Can't Stand Krisien Chenoweth

I didn't go see Wicked because she was in the show and I still haven't seen it!

So I can understand your not being crazy about Cheyenne. But I liked him immediately the first time I saw him perform. Though I thought he was weak in Damn Yankees.

Oh, you aren't the only one.  Believe me.  I had the same impression after seeing Xanadu.

Oh, good!

Thank you. That makes me feel much better. :-)

He's okay, I'm just a little sick of seeing his every move covered here like he's a gay version of Brangelina.

"Cheyenne Jackson took a breath today!  Did you see it?"  Swoooooooooon!

How much would you pay?

The Variety review notes the following pricing for Cheyenne:

$60 top

I wonder how much bottoms had to pay?

The movie version of "Rent" was PG-13

They trimmed some of the profanity, but not that much; it also kept several same-sex kisses, hugs, etc.  If high schools are doing "Chicago," they can do "Rent," especially urban ones.

I would've loved to have seen Cheyenne's cabaret show.  Unfortunately, since leaving SF and moving to Portland, we don't have a lot of cabaret-friendly venues here (someone should create one and promote the hell out of it!).  Makes me miss the Plush Room on Sutter in San Fran.

Nice briefs model today--looks a lot like Jo from "Verboten Lieben."
