AfterElton Briefs: Another hunk joins "Howl", Anne to play Judy (twice!) and more!

Jake Gyllenhaal and Mike White thumwrestle/fist-bump/shake it out

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Above, gay-fave Jake Gyllenhaal and out screenwriter/actor-turned-reality star Mike White (The Amazing Race) meeting for lunch in Los Angeles. I'm guessing they met on the set of The Good Girl, which White wrote and appeared in and which starred Jake. More pics of the guys over here.
  • Mad Men's Jon Hamm has joined the cast of the Allen Ginsberg biopic Howl (which already stars James Franco as the gay beat poet, as well as Alessandro Nivola and Treat Williams), making the cast the hottest bunch of daddies in period hairstyles since Milk.
  • Gay-friendly triple-threat Anne Hathaway set to play another gay-friendly triple-threat, Judy Garland, in both the stage and screen adaptations of the biography of the star, Get Happy. I think I'm okay with that.

  • Meant to post this one yesterday but missed it: Above, check out Portia De Rossi's hilarious bit on Jimmy Kimmel where she apologizes to all the haters for marrying Ellen.
  • Gay Congressman Barney Frank has defended his use of the word "homophobe" in referring to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, pointing out that not all people who oppose gay marriage are homophobic and that he was referring to Justice Scalia's decisions in other cases regarding gay citizens.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

anne...judy...

anne hathaway as Judy? hmmm.....i sooorrrt of can see it....it's not a double take resemblance.....but anne is much better than judy davis (i think it was her) who played her a few years ago in that awful tv movie.

Judy as Judy

I thought Judy Davis as Judy Garland in "Me and My Shadwos" was amazing. Yes, the mini-series was too long and perhaps too repetitive -- although addiction is frequently long and repetitive, and I think this mini-series touched on this fact better than most movies and tv shows about addiction. Still, given the shortcomings of mini-series, Davis's fearless performance continues to haunt me.

I can definitely see Anne as a young Judy -- the parts of "Me and My Shadows" that the wonderful Tammy Blanchard played. But Anne just isn't old enough to play Judy from about 35 on... Young actors playing middle age rarely works. Indeed, young actors playing middle age is usually worse than young actors playing eldery characters.

I just thought....

i just thought the whole mini-series sucked in general. but maybe that was because by then, i was sick of the whole "let's focus on her addiction" whenever her name was brought up thing.

I think judy davis was better playing judy's late 30's-40's (ages i mean) part....but they had her playing judy during her 20's and that threw me off, because well....i couldn't see the resemblance AT ALL.

and yes, i can see Anne as judy in her late teens/through her 20's as well. if she is to play an older judy, they will have to go get it right.

sometimes these bio movies/tv things end up picking people who look nothing close to the person they are portraying. it annoys me to no end. ok, ramble over :-P

Anne Hathaway as Judy is a great idea

She has TONS of gay cred, plus the acting chops to play an addict -- as is evident from Rachel Getting Married.

Now who's going to write? Whos' going to direct? And most important of all -- who's going to play Kay Thompson?

Anne/Judy

Hmmm, I'm not sure about this.  Okay, I do like Anne, and certainly don't mind the thought of a third biopic about Judy, but there isn't a huge physical resemblance there.  Anne must be at least nine inches taller than Judy, for a start.  Still, could be interesting...

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
