AfterElton Briefs: "Breakfast" gets U.S. distribution, 25 years of Community, and more!

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • In gay movie news, Breakfast With Scot has been picked up for North American distribution by Regent Releasing (sister company of here! Films), who plan to release sometime this fall. if you want to weigh the upside/downside, check out the discussion over at our article on gay film distribution.
  • Shelter: The New York Times has a sweet piece on the NYC LGBT Community Center, which turns 25 this year. The building itself dates to before the Civil War.

  • Okay, a few months back I posted a publicity pic of Dancing With the Stars hunk Christian De La Fuente at a birthday celebration for Milk-Bone dog biscuits. Above, he's pictured at a birthday party for a cow named Maggie Moo in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear his publicist and I share a brain.
  • And in sorta-gay film news. Lake City, which stars Sissy Spacek and Soldier's Girl's Troy Garity, will receive a November 7th release, courtesy of Screen Media. While the film itself isn't gay, it is the debut feature of gay filmmakers (and partners) Perry Moore (best known to us as the writer of gay superhero novel Hero) and Hunter Hill.
  • Well, this is kind of a bummer ... we wrote recently that Michael Ausiello had blind itemed about a big gay twist coming for a sorta-hit show. Well, he spilled his beans, and the good news is, it's a kinda fun twist with two great actors involved. The bad news (for us, although not for our sister site!) is that it's two lady-type actors.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

Lito (photographed by Rick Day)!

Hated Breakfast with Scot

Really try hard to support gay films (duh), but this one was really an annoying mess. Is the book any good? Read my books! Explore "Brent's Brain" at http://www.brenthartinger.com

The book is quite a bit

The book is quite a bit different from the film especially the character Cavanagh plays. I enjoyed the book but I enjoyed the movie as well so...

Really? Hmmm. Well I'm seeing it tonight at "Outfest"

and I'll weigh in tomorrow.

Are you familiar with Ready? OK,  Brent?

I second Brent, which is really too

bad as I was SO looking forward to Scot. I thought it sounded like a great concept, but it utterly failed to capitalize on the idea. Cavangh's character was very off-putting and his performance was off. And, frankly, the little kid was incredibly annoying.

I've seen the first fifteen minutes of Ready, OK!, but got bored. Seemed like the same old story I'd seen before, but I'm going to go back and finish watching it after the TCA.

The characater of the kid WAS annoying

They were going for "delightful unconventional gender non-conformist," but they ended up with "kid exhibiting signs of Asberger's Syndrome."

This is too bad. The book,

This is too bad. The book, while not anything as good as "Breakfast with Tiffany" (!), had an interesting premise.

Outfest Starts tonight

And Breakfast With Scot is its opening night Gala.  Outfest seems to pick bad films to open the festival.  I am seeing 19 films in the next two weeks and can guarantee you many of them will better than this one.  I don't know how and why they make their decision except that it was the most publicized gay film of the season, but no awards so far.

I am looking forward to Hamlet 2, Were the World Mine, Clapham Junction, the documentary Equality U, and the always intriguing and varied short films interspersed throughout the festival.

Hamlet 2 looks hilarious

I would recomend

I would recommend Clapham Junction. Although it feels a little crammed, its quite good. Besides its a sort of reunion between Scudder (Rupert Graves) and Maurice (James Wilby).

Lito! Whoah-oh-oh-oh!

Actually, while I would have preferred to see Richard and Matthew hook up, Christine and Barb getting hitched in a marriage of convenience might be funny...hopefully better than I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

"Ready? OK" is great

Of the other films I've seen I liked The New Twenty, Hamlet 2, Were the World Mine, Tearoom, and most especially Meadowlark.

Really?

Christine and Barb? That would be hillarious. Because its Julia Louis Dreyfus I have high hopes it will be funny and done with respect.

I'm generally not into

I'm generally not into hairy legs but that Lito is hot!

I have to disagree with Michael and Brent

I really enjoyed Breakfast With Scot and thought the entire cast was quite good, especially the kid, Noah Bernett. Yes, his character Scot was annoying, initially anyway, but that was by design. Overall, I thought the film was both funny and heart-warming. I'd rate it a solid 7 out of 10.

I don't quite agree with RJ

But I'm more on the same page with him than I am with Brent and Michael. For me Breakfast with Scott produced smiles rather than laughs. Of course the kid's annoying -- he's a kid, that's his job. As for Cavanagh, the film was more about him than the kid in mnay ways, and that was its most interestign aspect. Less then being about an "effeminate" kid, Breakfast with Scott chiefly concerns a closeted adult, who finally comes out to himself.

Order the film from Canada

Breakfast with Scot can easily be ordered on DVD from amazon in Canada (amazon.ca) as they ship to the USA.  I've had my copy for  many months now, have shown it to three different sets of gay friends, and all enjoyed it.
