AfterElton Briefs: More magic for Neil Patrick Harris, ugly online ratings for "Milk" and more!

Matt Risch and Van Hansis at the opening of Hedda Gabler on Broadway

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Bunches of fave folks (including out Broadway star Matt Risch and As the World Turns's Van Hansis) showed up to the opening night of Hedda Gabler on Broadway, starring Mary-Louise Parker, Michael Cerveris and Peter Stormare. Plenty of pics over here.
  • Did the haters unleash a homophobic attack on Milk via IMDb ratings following the Oscar nominations?
Dustin Lance Black

  • Prestidigitatiounous! Neil Patrick Harris will host and co-produce the Academy of Magical Arts 41st annual awards show, in March.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

IMDB...

...comment board has the odd sane poster in amongst the most ridiculous and idiotic bunch of posters I've ever seen. Not to be taken seriously.

Daniel Radcliffe is so cute and funny. Wish the young North American "instant" stars were as down to earth as Daniel.

And that is one opening on Broadway that I wish I was at. West coast Canada is so far away....sob.

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

idiot posters

Man, I could not agree with you more about the boards over on IMDB.  You do occasionally come across intelligent comments written by people with a sincere desire to talk film or television.  But gosh, a huge percentage of the stuff written over there sounds like it's typed by nasty illiterate 12-year-olds; completely pathetic.

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

Too true!

All anyone has to do is check the posts on the Brokeback Mountain discussion board - much of which has nothing to do with the film itself - to see the level of discourse at IMDb. It's quite eye-opening for those who don't have to deal with homophobia in their daily lives.

agree with the first part

... but the comment boards on any gay movie reveal exactly how difficult it is to have any level of discussion on a gay issue. It's not just internet movie database, but any open bulletin board about any gay themed article has tons of comments and they're all awful. In fact, it doesn't even have to be gay themed to contain juvenille gay references.

Straight men basically seem to have an almost clinical obsession with us.

It's impossible to dismiss what's so clearly the basis of so many of our problems. We have to win ballot initiatives every year with the discussion like this, and never changing?

I *heart* Daniel Radcliffe

Can I just say that Daniel Radcliffe is the cutest thing ever? I really liked that interview and the video of him parodying Equus was priceless

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.

Were Van and Matt there together?

Looks lile Van and Matt were at the premiere together?  Are they dating?  Does this mean Van and Tyler Hanes broke up?  I hope not-- that's my fantasy 3-way team....

The IMDB

I've been ranting about the IMDB for years.  Since it's a complete democracy, unfortunately, trolls can spam something like there's no tomorrow, and drag a movie down with lots of "1 star" ratings and vitriolic reviews and precious little oversight.  When "Milk" opened, it leapt into the Top 250 movies of all time on the site, with a high "8" rating on average; if it's dropped significantly since then, it's been sabotaged--exactly, as someone up above pointed out, as "Brokeback" was.  (You think it's an accident that it's down around 7.8, while "Crash" is lodged in the Top 250 list with an 8.-something?)

If you want to comfort yourself, check out the rest of the IMDB Top 250 Movie list--it's crammed with gangster movies, fantasy/science fiction films, Kubrick, horror films, and other stuff that appeals to 20-something and 30-something geeks and gamers who still live in their parents' basement.  Harsh, but true.  (You'll find precious few romances, dramas, films with women as protagonists, musicals, children's films, black and white classic from old Hollywood, etc.)
