AfterElton Briefs: "Phillip Morris" gets board, a novel about a gay hitman, and more!

Visionary gay designer Alexander McQueen and Miss Jackson at the opening of his new L.A. store

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford is cool with the gay rumors, saying that it means he's "made it" in Hollywood. (Yes, but made it with whom?) In related news, congrats! We've all made it in Hollywood!
  • Here's the strangest press release for a faux memoir of a self-obsessed gay hitman who tangles with art thieves, alien invasions and "would-be vampires" that I've seen all week. (the novel is called Renaissance Killer)
  • Hey, As the World Turns fans: Luke actually popped up out of the blue in one scene at the end of today's episode to tell Holden what happened between him and Noah on Monday. What, Holden doesn't have TiVo? Sheesh...

  • The in-production prison romance I Love You Phillip Morris is getting some serious promotion already at the in-progress Cannes Film Festival. (Cinematical via Towleroad)
  • A recent advertising study focusing on brand loyalty of gay consumers tells us what we already know: we prefer companies that don't ignore us or treat us like dirt. A spokesman for the firm that conducted the study noted that "gays and lesbians are fiercely loyal customers to brands they perceive as reaching out to them". Well, at least he said "fierce".

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

Holy eff, is that really Shawn Ashmore?! Oh, Canada!

All Together Now!

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits

Oh Canada!

You Canadians out there, if you weren't feeling patriotic before you ought to now.

All I can say is, I'd sure like to fly that on my flag pole!

I agree that there is an impending sense of doom associated with this "I Love You Phillip Morris" business.  Why do I get the feeling that gays are indeed now the preferred minstrels employed by comedic actors with questionable taste?

Shawn has an identical twin brother

Some of you may already know this but Shawn has an identical twin brother, Aaron.

Aaron Ashmore is probably best known for his current role of Jimmy Olsen in Smallville. He also played a love interest for Veronica Mars and of course, the role of Marc Hall in Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story.

I'm glad you mentioned 'Philip Morris'

Is anyone else sort of dreading this movie? I keep feeling like it's going to be another 'Chuck and Larry' cringe-fest.  I've never really liked Jim Carrey, and I understand that it is based on a book written regarding a real events, but I just really think this movie is going to be absolutely horrible in regards to gay representation.

Okay, that being said...

Holy (inappropriate term)! Shawn Ashmore FTW! Google Image Search here I come...

Ice Ice Baby!

Shawn is steaming in that picture. I've never been so jealous of a Maple Leaf!

Jim Carrey makes me want to dig my eyes out with a dull spoon, and the pictures I've seen look like his portrayal is very affected and stereotypical.

But then maybe the guy he's playing is stereotypical and affected.

Would anyone want the screen adaptation of Quentin Crisp to be butched up?

I feel the need to point out...

there really are no Briefs involved in that pic.  You owe us another one.  Meanwhile...  [blows up Ashmore picture to life-size and hangs on wall]

HOT picture of Shawn, but text has to go.

Bring on all the men without regard to their sexual orientation, especially those as cute as Shawn, but did anyone read the text on the Cosmo spread? I was having a moment and then I look closely and realize that he's yapping about his love of women's necks. Off with his flag.

Why do you get the feeling that "gays are the preferred minstriels"...I don't know.  Self-fulfilling phophecy maybe?  You haven't seen the movie and have already decided it's homophobic.  With that attitude, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Stop and Think About It...

This movie involves Jim Carrey. We're talking about the man from Ace Ventura and The Mask. If you are not worried, you should be.

God help us if he decides to do that "talking butt" routine of his!

krisu50's picture

but you're forgetting

there's also ewan macgregor in it too, whom has been really gay friendly in the roles he has taken in his career... and jim carey has been known for doing serious movies as of late (beginning with the truman show and spotless mind).

I guess all i'm saying is let's wait for it to come out before we judge it, we might be pleasantly surprised!

I didn't realize Cosmo still

I didn't realize Cosmo still had centerfolds! About a year ago I was going through some boxes of old magazines in my mom's basement and I found the Burt Reynolds Cosmo! I have to say that it frightened me -- he was SO furry! And the moustache was scary as well.

One man's scary

is another man's tasty! I much prefer the hairy-chested moustached studs of the 70s to the overly shaved/waxed/plucked gym bunnies that took over the male modeling business in the 80s & 90s. Thank goodness hairy chests are starting to make a comeback!

God bless hairy chests

I've never gotten that plucked chicken aspirational look of recent years. I much prefer hairy men, but there many incredible looking males who barely have any and I am more than fine with that too.  It's the whole hair eradication that I am not a fan of as it seems like it's almost treats hair like an enemy.

I am not a fan of moustaches on their own, but think that some guys look amazing with a heavy 2 or 3 day growth. The youngest Walker on B&S qualifies.

What I am also a fan of is the Adrian/Milo avatar. Is it superimposed or an actual scene/photo?

This man likes many different types of men so I better vote soon.

The Adrian/Milo avatar

is not superimposed, as far as I can tell. Here's a link to the pictures from the photoshoot:

And here's another Petrelli Brothers bonding moment, with Milo grabbing Adrian's ass while looking rather pleased with himself. I love these two!

Another vote for hairy chests

And legs. And bellies. And arms, of course. And toes. And asses. And backs. (At the very least, the tuft of hair that grows at the base of the spine.) And that 5 o'clock shadow that shows up at noon.

I'm with you, DC & Giovanni -- the waxing and plucking has never done it for me. Moustache or no moustache, give me a man with hair. A man who never had any (or much) is okay, but why go to the trouble of taking away what has been given to you?

Knickie's picture

I'm not saying that Burt

I'm not saying that Burt wasn't the bomb back in the day -- it was just kind of a shock seeing all that hair! LOL! Maybe it's what we're used to seeing as an aesthetic. But it struck me as so of a different era -- so Seventies. Hey, there was a reason my mom kept it all these years!

As a Canadian...

that picture brings a tear to my eye.  As far as Jim Carre goes, I never liked his style of humour anyway.  I never found him funny.

BTW.. in my world, hairy chests and moustaches never went out of style.

I don't remember any homophobia

in either Ace Ventura or The Mask nor have I heard of anything homophobic that Jim Carrey has said or done.  Leaving aside two powerful films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show. are you saying because he's been in silly movies...that this movie will be silly?  And if it is silly...it will be homophobic?  My head hurts.  I'm not "worried" because I don't go through life looking for offenses...real or imagined.

Comedy Styles

Well, it's rather a loaded question. For example, was I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry really homophobic? How about Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay? Or (going back a ways) the various Police Academy movies with the infamous Blue Oyster Bar?

At no point in any of my posts did I make any accusations of homophobia, so it's actually rather interesting that so many people have leapt on that as somehow being implied.

What does bug me (and a lot of other people) is that gays are often used as a source of sophomoric gag humor that isn't actually homophobic, but which may nonetheless be demeaning.

Homophobia is not required for this to happen. Adam Sandler is actually very pro-gay, and has treated gay characters well in Big Daddy for example. But a lot of gay people found I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry unfunny and maybe even a little offensive due to it's handling of characters and the topic of homosexuality.

Now, all I made is a few brief remarks here, and indeed this response is considerably longer than all of my intial comments combined. So I think it's actually kind of funny that anyone would think that concerns about this movie are a major issue for me. As anyone who is familiar with my posting tendencies knows, whenever I am genuinely bugged by something my posts are usually lengthy and in explicit detail. If I'm worng then I'll be pleasantly surprised. If I'm right (as many were about INPYCAL) then maybe I'll be prophetic.

So I have to say there is certain humor for me as to how much furor I caused by expressing some concern. Or are there just that many Jim Carrey fans on this board?

"Gay minstriel show"

Is the term you used.  You're honestly going to try to say that doesn't imply homophobia?  I'm not particuarly a Jim Carrey fan, actually.  I think he has maybe a 50 perpect success rate.  It's not about Jim Carrey.  It's just about not falling into the trap of being "pre-offended" that many gays fall into.  The movie hasn't even finished being made yet and I feel like many people have already ticked an imaginary counter in their head "well, there's another example of Hollywood homophobia, when will it ever stop?" And I just think that kind of thinking is self-destructive and self-defeating.  Look at poor Adam Sandler.  This isn't directed at you, because you said he was pro-gay, but I know a lot of people who never even saw the movie who heard from friends it was homophobic, and therefore Adam Sandler is homophobic.  I did see the movie, and I have to say it might have been the most unfunny movie I've seen in a very long time, though Adam Sandler's heart was clearly in the right place and he was clearly trying to send a pro-gay message.  And he got punished for it, because people seem to love being offended.   And it made me think that Adam might think, "well, why bother even trying to have a positive social message?  People are gonna hate me no matter what."  And then we lose a well-meaning straight ally, who just happened to make a crappy movie.

Definitions

Honestly, I have a narrower defintion of "homophobia" than some people. This is because I think that it minimizes true homophobia to equate the word with anything that might be considered unflattering or impolite. There are those who have argued (and who I agree with) that not ever gay-unfriendly statement can be considered "homophobic".

A possible symptom of homophobia yes, but not real homophobia in and of itself. This is the same as the way many people may make jokes about Blacks or Jews or Asians or whatever but don't actively hate them, aren't revolted by their presence and don't believe that they should suffer/be punished.

However, the fact that the Jewish person might be offended by the joke may not make the person telling the joke anti-Semitic, but it does make them rude.

Now, in this case, I freely admit that I'm not a fan of Carrey's humor. He tends to lean towards very crass comedy to try and pull laughs out of audiences that might otherwise be oblivious to more subtle humor. So naturally I'm not hugely enthused by his involvement in this project. That said, I'm not going to be losing sleep until the movie comes out worrying about it. For that matter, I probably won't lose much sleep after it comes out and if it sucks either.

I think that there are maybe some people here who are just a bit too literalist and blew my admittedly sarcastic remarks way out of proportion.
