AfterElton Briefs: "Taking Woodstock" rolls, David Archuleta "Crushes" and more!

After the following assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • I don't know which I find more disturbing: that former NYC Mayor Ed Koch has posted a review of Another Gay Movie ... or that I agree with it.
  • Out actor Alan Cumming is trying to become an American citizen by November so that he can vote. We're talking Obama here, not American Idol.
  • Speaking of, lovable Monchichi American Idol also-ran David Archuleta has a video out for his first single, "Crush" ... and folks are confused as to whether the video is suggesting that the crushee in question is a boy or a girl...
Ang Lee takes Woodstock
  • Above, director Ang Lee kicks off the first day of filming Taking Woodstock (starring comedian Demetri Martin as gay Woodstock organizer Elliot Tiber) with a traditional Big Luck ceremony. EW had the exclusive ... can you pick out Martin, Emile Hirsch, and Jonathan Groff in the crowd?
  • The Wall Street Journal (well, an assistant editor for The New Republic in an editorial for the WSJ) discusses the significance of the first RNC in a decade where gays weren't used as a scare tactic.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

Not really

The David Arulleta video is not about a crush on a boy. It's about a crush on the blond in the video. Glancing at boys does not equal lusting after them. This sort of myopic imposition of wish upon reality doesn't produce anything positive.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely Cumming will be able to vote, as one has to register at least 30 prior to the election, so unless he can manage getting citizenship very, very early in October, it's going to be 2010 before he can vote in a national election. (unless the time limit is just a Texas thing, but I'm pretty sure it's federal)

Depends on the state in which he registers, Jonathan...

...in Oregon the registration has to be post marked or dropped off at the county elections office 21 days prior to the election.

They put out a casting call

They put out a casting call in a number of upstate college papers for "long-haired hippie types" as extras in the Woodstock film -- unfortunately you also had to be in your 20's, so that left moi out!

The Archuleta video...

...appears to have gone missing before I got a chance to see it. It's no longer available at the site linked to here, or at the site THAT one links to. I also couldn't seem to find it on YouTube.

That strikes me as odd.

I actually think it would be cool if the video was deliberately ambiguous about who he was crushing on.

I found the archuleta video

I know, it dissapeared from everywhere, but I found it here

Thanks for finding it!

Now that I've seen it, it's obvious that the object of the crush is the girl. I didn't read the comments-how bad were they? When I said it'd be cool if it was ambiguous, I meant that it'd be cool if he decided to make it that way-if he left it to fans to decide who his "character" liked more.

I can't understand why the video was pulled, since it seems thoroughly innocuous. Why would a record company pull promotion on a song they're trying to sell? Doesm't make a whole lot of sense.

The record company pulled it

According to what I saw on other sites yesterday, it was pulled by the record company because it had not been officially released yet. Someone got ahold of an advanced copy and put it up on youtube without their knowledge or approval. i'm sure when its officially out you won't be able to escape from it!

It's not even remotely ambiguous.

Sigh.  There's one shot where he's staring into the water and you only see the guy, and in the next shot you see the blond girl is also in the water.  All throughout the video, he's staring at the girl.  I don't know if it was gay guys or homophobes who decided he was looking at a guy.  Either way, it's kind of pathetic.
Michael 's picture

its pathetic

its pathetic to mess with a 17 yr. old like that (did you see the vote for the worst comments in the link?) but being a closeted gay 17 yr. old myself, I could definently relate to the lyrics of crush, except for that one line where he says "girl". so its not so much him looking at the guy, it more the lyrics. thats me. (btw, I heard the song on the radio first and didnt see the video until I searched for the link which took some digging seeing as how they pulled every youtube version of it)

I DO see the Ambiguity

I do the see the ambiguity Herald. Isolate the first minute and 15 seconds of the video - that may not seem like a fair thing to do, but it really makes the case. And keep in mind, too that on first viewing, you don't know what's coming up later...  It seems pretty ‘gay’.

Archuleta's physical focus is primarily on males. The camera shots also emphasize this focus (literally - the females are background). The blonde girl is barely noticeable in the first minute and 15 seconds. I had to watch the video a second time (with the intent of looking for her) to see that she actually does feature into the video (but mostly as background or in a single shot that doesn't associate her w/Archuleta).

The way the first 01:15 are shot (out of a total 03:30), some pretty gay-themed scenarios are suggested - especially when coupled with the lyrics that underscore the vignettes presented on-screen. Let’s storyboard the most obvious (and most talked about) vignette, along with the underscored lyrics. Notice who’s in focus and who’s background. Also take note of who Archuleta seems to be focused on:

It could easily be construed that Archuleta is singing about the boy. When you couple the first 01:15 (as they are shot) with lyrics like, "'cause the possibility that you would ever feel the same way about me is just too much" and "why do I keep running from the truth? All I ever think about is you", it’s very easy to see a gay-themed video.

I don't know how much input Archuleta had regarding the content, or if he approved this version.  As I see it though, it was written, directed and edited in such a way that gay themes can be be found pretty easily. As he is a minor, I do (at least) think about who might have made the final decisions regarding the content of this video.

The bottom line for me is that I completely agree with Michael:

its pathetic to mess with a 17 yr. old like that

I'm sorry, but no, it's not even remotely ambiguous

Even half of your screenshots don't have the guy in them.  And your screenshots are the entirety of the guy's screen time.  The guy is never even on camera alone.  He disappears half-way through the video.  The girl is the primary focus all throughout, even in the first minute.

Different perspective

Wow, I personally didn't see ANY ambiguity there whatever.  And I was looking for it!!!

Leave the kid alone

I know it isn't happening but I wish people would stop speculating, debating, insisting about this kid. He's what - seventeen? If he is gay can you imagine the pressure? It'd drive me deeper into the closet. I saw the vid. It's absolutely clear the "crushee" is the girl. He and blondie end up in the last frame together exchanging glances. If Archuleta had written the lyrics I could buy the ambiguity angle. But he didn't. Looking for a gay subtext in that vid is really grasping.

Waste of Time!

If there was ever a worthless pursuit, looking for the "gay angle" in a David Archuleta video has to be it. I feel sorry for anyone who actually cares.

The video should appeal to his core audience of tween and young teen girls -- other than that, the tune is incredibly bland and uninspired.
