AfterElton Briefs: Voting opens for "Design Star", James Franco "Howl"s, and more!

Allen Ginsberg and James Franco

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Fresh off playing Harvey Milk's lover, Scott Smith, James Franco will play gay beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the upcoming biopic Howl. Franco notes that he plays the poet in his younger days, "before he went bald and gained weight."
  • Ever classy (and press-savvy) out actor Neil Patrick Harris did Britney Spears a solid last week when he spoke highly of her on The View. He also acknowledged what Whoopi did for his career (they co-starred in Clara's Heart when he was knee-high to a grasshopper).
Wait, why do so many gay men love Kylie?
Oh, right ... (Photo: Getty)

  • I love RuPaul as much as the next guy, but isn't it a bit of a slow day when TMZ is stalking him out of drag and asking why there aren't more "famous transvestites"? Ru was, of course, all charm.
  • I don't know who this vicious Debbie Schlussel woman is (did someone feed Ann Coulter after midnight?), but boy does she hate ABBA. Interesting that she condemns Mamma Mia! for being an instrument used by gay men to control women when there were no gay men involved in its making. I know, Debbie - who needs facts when you can just call people names instead?
  • And don't forget to vote for Matt to win this season's Design Star! We have until Wednesday to root for Team Gay's lone survivor (you can vote up to five times a day via phone).

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

Stripe with a Blonde Dye Job!

Wasn't she active in the Indy circuit in the late seventies? I could have sworn she did a couple self titled movies.

What is up with these shrieking harpies working the bimbo look? They give clueless blondes everywhere a bad reputation...aside from the one they've already earned.

On a more serious note, how many Debbies does it take to screw in a light bulb? One, but while changing it, she blames the bulb for choosing to be blown.

Today's "This guy" is really lovely

Wrap him up and FedEx him to me, won't you?

Hmmmm...

I can't be the only gay man who does not find the Nike ad offensive. When you're playing basketball - THAT AIN'T RIGHT. Believe it or not, there ARE times when even a gay man doesn't want another man's smelly balls in his face.

(Under other circumstances, I admit I would probably feel very differently... ;^D)

Also, in the Snickers ad, who's to say that was a gay man doing the power walking?

I'm not crazy about the 'Get some balls' slogan. That's just wrong. But aren't we hurting our own cause to insist that the ad was a slur on homosexuals? Doesn't that make US the ones who become the 'stereotypers' by saying that (because power-walking appears 'effeminate') the man must be gay? Why couldn't that just as easily be a straight man?

Lighten up, Frances... I think it's important for us to pick our battles a little more wisely.

PS: The Dodge Caliber/Fairy Commercial

In following the links RE: the Snickers ad, I was lead to the Dodge Caliber commercial. I have to admit that I like this commercial. Why? Because I'm wicked...

At the end of the commercial, a macho sh*thead hurls the slur, "Silly little fairy". The thing I like about the commercial is the immediate response from the fairy. She preys on his worst nightmare and makes it come true...

With a quick flick of her wand, she transforms him into what (to him) would be his biggest fear and the most humiliating circumstance he could possibly endure.  And he responds with a reaction that confirms my suspicions are correct.

I love that little 'revenge' ending... but I'm wicked.

Sibelius, why should it be any more acceptable...

...to bash an effeminant straight man?

Just because a guy doesn't conform to someone else's idea of what a man should be doesn't give them the right to hurl things at him, no matter if they're straight or gay.

David E is a Fraud!'s picture

I don't think it's acceptable...

...I just question whether/not it's the best idea to label it as a slur against GLBTs.

The article in the Guardian stated:

The Human Rights Campaign criticised Mars for perpetuating "the notion that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is a group of second class citizens and that violence against GLBT people is not only acceptable, but humorous".

Although I agree with their statement, my concern is that the Human Rights Campaign may have inadvertently perpetuated a stereotype by assuming the actor in the ad was portraying someone from the GLBT community.

I wonder if it would have been better to speak out against the behavior applied to any human being, rather than to have the Human Rights Campaign imply that because the ad labeled the behavior as 'effeminate', the character must be gay...

Under these circumstances, it seems that the Human Rights Campaign did the stereotyping (even though I feel pretty certain that wasn't their intent).

Good points

Sibelius  -  I agree with you on two fronts.  First, that it's a bad idea to object to the ad on GLBT grounds, since that does indeed assume the character was gay, based on his walk.  I for one don't want to go down that road.  Second, and this echoes what Dave said as well, it's enough to object to the ad because it degrades someone for being different, whether they're gay or straight.  My personal perception is that the ad did NOT mean to imply the guy was gay.

James Franco as Ginsberg? Um

James Franco as Ginsberg? Um -- no. Not even when he was young. Johnny Galecki would be closer to the mark.

Real Question is Why Does The Media Think Gay Guys Like Kylie

The gay guys I know like guys. I think sometimes the media likes to create gay icons where none exist. Perhaps the MTF's like Kylie, or some of the drag queen crowd. Otherwise, it makes no sense. This isn't the 50's when the gay community had to idolize female performers for lack of anything better to do.

Perhaps gay publicists love her, gay concert-promoters love her, gay record-execs love her (the same ones who never give out gay male artists any support) but as for the average gay bloke it seems concocted.

I agree

I agree with you GaySpouseDotCom. Why do gay guys feel the need to worship female performers and totally disregard all the talented gay performers out there.

We as gay people should support and look up to our gay brothers and then maybe all those gay artists will be recognized.

We love men and are attracted to men so why so many gay men worship women. Let the straight men do that since they are attracted to them.

This doesn't mean that we should stop listening to female artists music. Just don't put them on a pedestal.

Gay male artists need our support and love so they can become as famous as all those female "icons".

For years I have been searching for good songs sung by gay men. I am tired of hearing songs by hetero men singing about their girlfriends and a girl they are in love with or whathave you. Lets hear some songs that reflect our lives. Men singing about men they love.

Gay Talent Deserves Support

I second that notion completely.

I do believe gay fans make

I do believe gay fans make up a huge part of Ms Kylie`s hard core fan base, and maybe British & Aussie gays would get her more than American gays.

I also feel that I should recommend Mr. Darren Hayes` latest CD & TOUR DVD,amazing work of art.He just came out last year I believe, and he & Kylie are on my favourite list.

A recommendation

It is hard to find good songs sung by gay men. I'm going to pimp the only one I've really found, Declan Bennett (declanbennett.co.uk) His music isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he's an out songwriter whose music is almost always directed towards men. His albums tell a story, actually. Because the music is usually supposed to be talking to the person it's about, at first it seems gender neutral.

From his song Painter's Ball:

"Keep a note of what you're gonna tell them when your caught
It always sounds so good up there but toxicated may prevent you from giving that last final speech
Your Oscars' on its way
But are you straight enough to pick it up today?"

"Did someone feed Ann Coulter after midnight?"

Brian, if I drank milk, you'd make me snort it back out my nose!

As the only gay man who didn't care for "Mamma Mia," I still think that Schlussel harpie is full of crap. I'm not a woman-hater; in fact, most of the gay men I know are as much feminists as most women. (By that, I mean they support equal respect and treatment for women, not that they are "effeminate" like that harpie's shrill description of the "gay man" at her movie.) Women like this broad give feminism a bad name, and make all sentient beings want to crawl under a rock. I've always avoided the term "Femenazi" because I thought it was insulting. But this contentious dickweed deserves it. (Notice how I called her a "dickweed"? I'm forcing my gayness on her! Whee!)

The blog wouldn't force its gayness on you. Unless you asked the blog to.

Coming right on the heels of "Milk"

this Ginsberg project shows that James Franco is in a seriously gay mood. I would do nothing to discourage him.

Johnnay Galecki can play Peter Orlovsky.
