Alan Tudyk cast as the gay lead of the new Mutchnick/Kohan pilot

Michael got the good news (in our opinion, anyway) late last night that Firefly and Death at a Funeral star Alan Tudyk has been cast as the gay lead in the new pilot that Mutchnick/Kohan (the guys behind Will & Grace) are producing for ABC. We're excited because Tudyk is a great comic actor and isn't afraid of taking risks (as his extended comic nude scene in Funeral can attest).

Another plus to Tudyk's casting, purely from a visibility perspective, is that he's got an enormous built-in fanbase of folks who might not otherwise be inclined to tune into a gay/straight buddy comedy: sci-fi geeks.

Now let's hope that the rest of the cast fills out as well and that the pilot is a slam-dunk, and that we see the series on our sets this fall, eh? For an idea of just how insanely popular this guy is with the sci-fi set, check out the video after the break of his and co-star Summer Glau's appearance at a sci-fi convention. It's pretty awesome.

Yay! to the nth degree!

Words cannot describe how excited I am to hear this! I mean, the decimal level of my initial scream of glee must have been off the charts! I am a HUGE Firefly fan and Wash, of coarse, one of my favorites! Others might know Alan Tudyk from Dodgeball where he played Steve the Pirate. He was also played Sir Lancelot in Spamlot on Broadway. Anyways, I'm thrilled to pieces! Fingers crossed that this show gets picked up! I'm also really excited to see how many of the Firefly crew are on televsion right now. It's great!

Interesting

He has already played a gay character in Sandra Bullocks rehab movie: 28 Days. And not in a good way, a little to winey for my taste, he was used as a comidic scapegoat. Of course that is not his fault. This guy is very likeable.

I just hope that Mutchnick pushes the envelope with this show

When a show has a great cast and strong writing, the rest is up to the network executives/marketing gurus to try and give it the exposure it needs to find an audience.

We know that the "best" is not always what winds up making it, but since Mutchnick already has made serious cash for his work on Will and Grace, and if I am not mistaken was recently quoted in the James Hillis article as saying something to the effect that it's up to the writers not to self-censor, I'd really like to have him shoot for the funniest show that he can make while giving his gay character a palpable sex/love life that is leap years ahead of what we saw onscreen in his biggest hit to date. I am not blaming the guy here, just hoping for more expansive development.

I've said many times that I'll take quality/fun over cursory gay inclusion any day of the week, but they need not be mutually exclusive. I think that comedy is by far the hardest genre to tackle, which is probably why I watch such few traditional comedies and even abandoned Will and Grace after year 3 or 4 as I always found myself more interested in Karen and Rosario than anything else.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for this show as we need more gay men on TV and much more fun scripted material, especially truly funny comedies, as reality competitions may have reached a new low in the boredom barometer with that grooming show on Animal Planet. Truly tragic. Poor Jai Rodriguez. Work is work, so the best to him too as maybe it will lead to something less cringe-worthy.

I just introduced Firefly

I just introduced Firefly to a new fan yesterday, great timing for such news!

Wash, take my love, take my land...

Love Tudyk and hopefully the show as well

Alan Tudyk was great as the "funny guy" role in Firefly. He never overacted it for laughs. He let the natural comedy of the script come through. Actually, all the characters did. Firefly wasn't in the comedy genre, but it had many funny moments. Sitcoms could learn from that kind of writing.

I grew bored of W&G because of the lack of believable, relatable characters. The writing sacrificed character development for humour a few too many times. I'm hoping this new show will be much better, because Alan Tudyk deserves good material. Character development and laughs don't have to be mutually exclusive. Just look at Frasier, How I Met Your Mother, The Golden Girls, or, as I mentioned, Firefly.

28 days

So great, I loved him, he played a very endearing, funny, gay man in the movie 28 days, in 2000 with sandra bullock.
