"American Teenager" lets two new gay characters in on the "Secret"

Alex Boling and Larry Sullivan

Up until now most of us probably knew ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager as "that one where Molly Ringwald has the pregnant kid". But we just got word that tonight's episode features two gay characters as a part of the central episode plot.

In tonight's episode, pregnant teen Amy Juergens (I'm not even kidding - I swear) is presented with a couple to potentially adopt her unborn kid. Apparently Brad and Angelina were unavailable, but Amy's father, George Juergens (sorry, I can't get over that name!) thinks that his gay coworker and his hubby might be the perfect adoptive 'rents.

As far as the gays go (who are NOT named Juergens, from what I can tell), they're played by Alex Boling (who plays Donovan) and Larry Sullivan (who plays Leon), whom you may recognize from the gay flick The Trip.

From the looks of it the guys will be appearing in a handful of episodes (Leon's slated for at least 3 eps and Donovan for more), so they aren't going anywhere fast. Once again ABC Family is breaking new ground when it comes to what kind of families they're getting behind.

Here's a few more pics of the guys...

Secret Life!

This show is one of my guilty pleasures - I can't say the acting is great, and all the characters are absolute archetypes (bad boy, religious girl, rich kid, pregnant girl, self-righteous baby-daddy, angry dad, etc), but for some reason, it's oddly compelling.  It's exactly the opposite problem I have with BSG - I know, while I'm watching BSG, that the writing is amazing, the actors are great, and the characters are some of the most complex anywhere, yet I can't connect with it.  I really, really want to, and I never miss it, but I just don't find it relatable.

The main concern I have is since all the characters are archetypes/stereotypes, these guys will be too - but I hope I'm surprised.  I'd hate to start hating my guilty pleasure.

ABC Family is turning into a very progressive network.  Considering it was born under a different name, with a different mission, I'm quite proud of the network.

Larry Sullivan..............

I might just have to start watching this if Larry Sullivan is going to be on the show. I have had a crush on him since I saw him in a short film back when I first got the internets. It was very similar to the movie THE TRIP which I also love. Thanks for the heads up guys.

That short is called Love,

That short is called Love, Death & Cars.  It is also the short that made me notice Larry as he was wonderful in that short.  I believe it is available on some DVD as part of a short films collection

And Larry is one of the sweetest actors ever.  Very down to earth and will actually talk to his fans. :)

Larry Sullivan Rocks

He was one of my all time favorite boyfriends of Will (Will and Grace)

Robert the ballet dancer whom Will was too much of a snob and old fogie to appreciate.

LOVED HIM.

Have to second or third here...

The Trip was ok but his performance in the Will & Grace epsiode "Jingle Balls" was fantastic!  He was so cute, innocent, and naive that I was always sad that he never became Will's bf. I liked him and the video clerk who was too young for Will better than Bobby Cannavale. Please be gentle with your tomatoes. Now I will do my own dance in honor of him.

I've had a minor crush on Larry...

... every since he appeared on Will & Grace during a holiday episode as an adorable ballet dancer who was dating Will. Looking forward to checking out his new show.

To die for

I've had a major crush on Larry Sullivan since The Trip ... truly adorable - the clothes-off music number was my undoing and so heartbreaking at the final desert sequences - I was terrified he'd do something drastic to himself!

He was great in W&G - shamelessly showed off his dance background.

Now I'm madly awaiting his upcoming movie - Pretty Ugly People, co-starring with some of my fav actors - Missi Pyle, Melissa McCarthy and the gorgeous Jack Noseworthy. Click on link to see clip where Larry is interviewed about his role etc.  http://www.prettyuglypeople.com/PUP-cast.html

Gay characters

I always like it when they bring new gay characters on a show. Hopefully it won't crash and burn like it do most times, or be just "barely there" gay characters. But this looks interesting, so will definitely watch and give it a try!

God bless Larry Sullivan!! WIsh I'd seen this episode.

I'll Hulu it this weekend when life settles down.  Larry's a wonderful actor--he and his partner's chemistry in "The Trip" really made the movie work, and Larry had the most difficult dramatic arc to cover, which I thought he did superbly.  (And yes, I too love the goofy-sexy striptease bit.)  I didn't realize he was the ballet dancer on "W & G" but I remember the episode--again, I'll have to track it down.

Just for the heck of it, Miles Swain, the cutie who wrote and directed "The Trip," is also a total sweetheart.  I told him outside the Castro how much I liked his movie, and he gave me a hug that almost squeezed the stuffings out of me.  Isn't it nice when cool people do well?

Just watched Secret Life

Just got around to this episode of American Teenager, and it was about what I expected.  Everyone is screwed up, and everyone is an strange archetype - the gay guys are great cooks, but also like boxing.  One works in the furniture store for George, and might be described as "fussy" but it's no more a type than anyone else on the show.  Sullivan's character only had a couple lines, but he, fitting the "provider" role, is well of from a "successful line of organic baby clothes" - why is no one on TV a middle management drone?  Why is everyone into organic businesses, etc.?  Like I said before, I like the show for some strange reason, and in a way, I'm glad the new gays are just as two dimensional as the rest of this cast.  Somehow though, the combination of 2-D characters works for me.
