Angry Puppy video blog 12: Monsters, Teeth, and more

In this week's Angry Puppy video blog, Marc and Lee dish on vaginas with teeth (in regards to the horror comedy Teeth, which we also reviewed earlier this week), handi-cam horror (in regards to Cloverfield, which rocked the house), Marc's Top 10 Gay and Bisexual Sci-Fi Characters list, and much, much more. Did you happen to pass last week's Geek Challenge? Well they've got another one for you this week ... are you geek enough to handle it?

Check it out below...

Terminator SCC, Buffy, Dru

I guess nobody is really loving the Terminator. The subsequent episodes have been somewhat boring. And the general direction seems to be a huge mistake, but I still would like to know what you guys thought of them.

I don't really like Ex Machina. I like to have Science in my Science Fiction. Ex Machina might as well be a variant of "The Wire" on HBO. I don't really consider it Science Fiction.

As to your Nut Job list, I LOVE DRUSILLA. She should have been the recurring character instead of Spike.

By the way, do you guys feel that Marti Noxon RUINED Buffy season 6? I say YEAH. More than anything else, it was Joss Whedon's vain attempt to keep Firefly going despite all signs that Fox was killing it. Not even Buffy Season 7 was that good. The ending was ridiculous in my opinion.

Buffy Season 6

Uh oh, you won't like this, but I liked Season 6 - mostly because I'm a sucker for Willow, Willow as a witch and Willow with Tara. All pointing toward Season 6.

In retrospect, the ending of the season does seem kind of weak, but I know if I watched the whole season leading up to it again, I'd be right there with it.

I'm less positive about season 7.  Though all in all I liked it, the whole thing seemed sort of "unreal" like that last season of Roseanne, like anything could happen at any moment without consequence, like the internal rules of the Buffyverse no longer applied.  I'm not sure the show could possibly continue past that point as a TV series, but Season 8 as a comic works really well.  In the future, some might consider the whole TV series as just the setup work for years of comic storylines.

Terminator: I've been losing interest too, but I'll hold out for a while. Monday's episode is still in the DVR if that tells you anything.

Drusilla: Totally. I guess a little goes a long way, though.

You missed

You missed Northstar, which they explicitly pointed out as an X-Men character ;)

Angel

and I wonder if Brian K. Vaughn counts as well.

And yet more...

Don't forget Forge. And also (very obscure, and I'll confess to Googling my suspicion that) Earthquake (mentioned during discussion of Cloverfield) is a character as well.

I did much better this time than last time (though I confess to missing Storm). Beards indeed. What was I thinking?

If you're counting Andrew...

then how come no-one ever mentions the innuendo (in several episodes) surrounding the Futurama character of Zoidberg, he probably shows just as much homoerotic undertones, such as his just friends spooning with Hermes, plus his assertion that he wanted to smell Donkey Kong's robe, also there are other subtle homoerotic things about the Professor such as when he is kissed by the human version of Bender and expresses enjoyment, of course their only romantic relations (Edna & Mom) have been heterosexual, but the writers have fun with the innuendo the same way they do with Andrew in BTVS, something which is done to have all the fun of a LGBT character without any of the politics surrounding official declarations of sexuality, something which both show's have been better at doing with female LGBT characyters such as Willow, Tara and Kennedy from BTVS and Patty Boevier from The Simpsons.

PS. Regarding Marc's LGBT Action Figure collection, is there a figure of Patty Boevier, I would imagine there would have been at one point, also according to Torchwood magazine there are going to be Torchwood figures so that means Toshiko and Ianto can be added. :-)

Really - Zoidberg? I didn't notice, i always thought he was just weird but now I'll have to watch for that. There is a Patty Bouvier action figure, and she'll be joining our gallery (http://www.theangrypuppy.com/gallery-of-gay-action-figures/) sometime soon.

And most importantly thanks - because I didn't know about Torchwood characters and I'm so looking forward to them!

What kind of dialogue?

Marc, you said that Midnighter has pretty graphic dialogue with his husband. What kind of dialogue are we talking about here? What does he say?
Marc's picture

What Midnighter Says

Leaving some of the more explicit lines aside, I give you this:

In an aside to his husband, Apollo, in response to a bizarre biological threat made to both of them: "I've spent enough time around your balls to know I don't want to replace them."

In this particular case not terribly explicit, but still strong considering the homo-shy comics world we live in!

Since when is Andrew gay?

People always talk about Andrew being gay like it's written on his forhead and set in stone......case closed. The jury's in.In a little debate some time back on this site someone said something like "Andrew seemed totally comfortable with his attraction to men", and I was like "where are you getting that from?".They never said he was gay on the show, or suggested in any way, that I can rememebr anyway, that he liked guys.It never even crossed my mind.

You can't really say he acted in any kind of stereotypcally gay way(a lot of people like to make judgements based on that) because he acted like just another nerdy guy like Jonathan, who was definately defined as straight, so where are people getting this notion that Andrew was gay?

The deal with Andrew

The Andrew debate's been going on for a long time - check out this great thread over on Whedonesque, prompted by our list, in which Joss Whedon himself weighs in on the story.

http://whedonesque.com/comments/15286

Joss is responding to the debate about Andrew's last TV appearance in which he appeared to be interested in women for the first time, and how that led many fans to conclude he's either bi or straight. Whether or not his intentions came through in the show here's what he says to explain it:

"It has to be said: the Andrew scene in "The Girl in Question" was a victim of me dropping the ball. I specifically said there should be a party of men AND women, all glamorous and Italian, waiting for Andrew. I wasn't there when it was shot, and didn't have the time/money/energy to change it after the fact, though it made me crazy.

Andrew's sexuality is always on the cusp of self-awareness because Andrew is stunted emotionally and because it's hilarious."

***MYSTERY GEEK CHALLENGE #2 ANSWERS***

This week's Mystery Geek Challenge category was X-Men, and we intentionally hid the names of 14 X-Men in last week's vlog. Congratulations to Ben Weldon who guessed 10 of
them, and bonus point for Storm, who was added unintentionally as a 15th. AdamO added Earthquake, who was part of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, but I don't think officially joined the X-Men at any point (I could be wrong about that?)

Here's the list of 14 X-Men who we intentionally mentioned:

  1. White Queen
  2. Cannonball
  3. Wolverine
  4. Longshot
  5. Northstar
  6. Angel
  7. Rogue
  8. Forge
  9. Karma
  10. Banshee
  11. Havok
  12. Beast
  13. Juggernaut
  14. Professor X
