Angry Puppy video blog: Blu-ray, Torchwood, and movies that deserve a second chance

Marc and Lee are back to talk about Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD and using the AppleTV's new features to replace an accidentally erased Lost. They also clarify Neil Gaiman's comments regarding Torchwood and give their impressions of the new episode "Meat". Finally, they review the sci fi/parkour movie District 13 (or at least the actors) and recommend "10 Movies That Deserve a Second Chance".

Check it out after the break!

    Great vlog boys

Blu-ray's victory was a foregone conclusion due to Sony sticking the drive into every P3.  If Toshiba had been able to get Microsoft to make HD-DVD standard on every X-Box, instead of an add-on, then things might have been very different.

Gaimen was absolutely correct in his assessment.  Much as I enjoy Torchwood there are times when I find myself shrieking at the TV over their ineptitude.  In particular the way Gwen's cellphone is constantly on so that Rhys can call her with domestic minutae while she's in life-threatening situations is a clear leader to a Darwin Award were she to be devoured by Weevils while arguing with Rhys about being late for dinner.  Of course, at least now she can just say that she has a woman in a cyber-bikini or badly-dressed 51st Century playboy about to molest her and ring off.

Still, we all know she'd drop Rhys like a bad habit and feed him a fistful of Retcon if Jack would just come right out and say that he wants her.  Whore.  I hope Ianto breaks down and puts cyanide in her coffee.

Owen comes in at number 2 with the whole leaving-the-SUV-unlocked (apparently with the key in it) deal.  However, more disturbing is the fact that the Torchwood SUV is loaded with all kinds of black ops tech and yet doesn't have any kind of defensive/recovery mechanisms other than LoJack.  That bespeaks an organization that really doesn't think through their security issues.  For that matter, so does the ability of a pizza delivery girl to get all the way down into the Hub, especially during a conflict situation with a cyberwoman running amok.  Clearly the Hub lockdown is only good for keeping the team themselves in.

Bringing us to Tosh at number 3.  Mary was kind of an obvious mistake, and common sense dictates that when you work for an anti-alien black ops organization and an admitted mind-reader takes an interest in you there's probably an ulterior motive.  I'm just saying.  Also, no good geek I know takes their laptop anywhere without an AC adapter.  Either Tosh has a weak lower back and is very conscious of her bag's weight or else she's not very prepared.

Ianto's off the list for mental health (and because I like him) since he clearly suffered from post-Canary Wharf PTSD, as well as a fetish for Def Leppard's "Women", that resulted in his determination to keep cyber-bikini Lisa around.

Jack, of course, can't die and therefore can afford to be as stupid as he pleases.

    Lots of fun all around!

    Blu-ray and Torchwood

To be honest, I was rooting for Blu-ray because of the name only.  I don't want to have to say HD-DVD all the time, and neither format seemed to have much intrinsic superiority over the other. The winner turned out to be the one with the most studio support, not necessarily the one that was better.

I think we really called it when Warner Bros. decided to drop HD-DVD in January, but unless you were desperate for a hi-def player, it was worth waiting a few weeks to be sure HD-DVD was on the way out.

I saw some funny ads on Engadget this morning. HD-DVD players are now being marketed as "upscaling DVD players" to get them off the shelves. They do play regular DVDs too, so if the prices drop enough you could still get one to replace an older DVD player.

Did you see Torchwool? It sounds like you might like this Torchwood parody that I found on Brian's blog here the other day.

    Socking it to Torchwood

Yes, I saw the sock puppets skit and it was hillarious!  I especially liked "You can't have an episode of Torchwood without gay innuendo".   Brilliant!

True, Blu-ray sounds better than HD-DVD, but Betamax sounded better than VHS but that didn't save it.  Like I said, I think that Sony really got the most traction out of the PS3, especially since it priced out about the same as an actually BD player.

I actually have a PC with a drive that plays both formats, so my bets were hedged one way or another, although I was finding myself inclined to buy more BD.  Of course, that's also motivated partly by the fact that I sometimes had issues gettting HD-DVD's to play if they had difficulty connecting to the Web site to retrieve the online extras.  Transformers in particular refused to play if it couldn't get to the site.
