I love Angry puppy.

.....First to comment.yeah! It took me a while to catch up, but I love this vlog. You two are so fucking cute I can't stand it.I can relate to the nostalgia of old video games.I got some of my old favorites like the Streets of rage and Golden axe series and the X-men games. Now they and my old Sega genesis are boxed away in my closet.

I'm excited about Iron man and the next Bond movie........minus the bond girl.By the way, one last thing......in the last episode of Angry puppy you referred to Lee as your smizmar and your parmaky. What the hell is that?*LOL*

geek love

actually don't know how to spell either of these, but 'smizmar' is from Futurama and means something like lover - kif uses it to describe amy.

and 'parmechai' (or whatever) is klingon for mate (i think) and was a weird thing for me to say as i'm totally not a trekkie but i do love deep space nine and especially the multigendertastic jadzia dax, which is how i know that term.

here's hoping for the first 'Bond boy' instead!

The origin of Angry puppy.

I don't know how well you know Michael, or how much you talk to him, but he would probably tell you that I am very inquisitive.I once asked him how Afterelton came to be.I was kind of um,......aggressive.Now that i'm obsessed with Angry puppy, even though like 85% of the things you talk about go right over my head, i'm going to ask you the same thing:what is the origin of Angry puppy? Was Michael just sitting around one day, and thought "you know, I think maybe we should have a few more vlogs than just Two gay guys.Maybe a vlog about geeky stuff would be a good idea.Brent, do we know any gay geeks?"

I'm curious how something like this got started and how it works.

Let's hear it for the gay geeks...

I applaud you guys for putting together the gay geek vlog! There's a pretty big gay sub-culture in the geek world. My husband and I are just now getting connected with it, and while some of the more extreme aspects scare us every once in a while, we realize that we need to be honest with ourselves and embrace our inner geeks - video games, sci fi, fantasy, etc... (and as soon as I read the 'Angry Puppy' Buffy reference, I knew exactly the episode and the scene - I am a geek).

Keep up the fun vlogs (and the cute loving looks between you two!).

DUNE

I agree with Marc, most Sci Fi Literature is poorly written. I too enjoy the Original DUNE Series by Frank Herbert. When you compare Herbert's writing to contemporary Sci Fi writers you realize the terrible gulf that exists. For example, "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson I feel is horribly written, even though the concept is kind of interesting. Of course, in a sea of crap such as the multitude of Star Trek, Stargate etc there are a precious few interesting novels. While I really enjoy Dune I do have one problem with it: I think the ornithopters are ridiculous. I don't think that a society with FTL drives and anti-gravity technology should be using ornithopters for transportation.

Neal Asher's "The Brass Man" has a few interesting ideas, however, his writing is insubstantial; he doesn't really give the big ideas the gravity and consequence they deserve.

"Absolution Space" Series by Alistair Reynolds I find to be poor in the science area. I can't really go into depth but: Having some of the protagonists travel to a Neutron Star 40 lightyears distant was a huge science snafu because if a Neutron Star existed within 40 lightyears of any planet that originally had life then the Supernova that created the Neutron Star would have destroyed life on that planet to begin with.

I really like a lot of the Philip K Dick Novels and he wrote them well, in my opinion.

There really hasn't been a great Sci Fi Novel in a really long time when I come to think of it.

In fact, most of the time Hollywood really screws up most of the Sci Fi properties out there. They feel the need to dumb it down for the general audience.

Have you guys reviewed BIOSHOCK the video game in a previous post? If not, I would like to know what you thought of it?

Re: Bioshock

Bioshock had already been out for about a month when we started the vlog, so it didn't get a real review.  We did mention our first impressions in an early episode.

At this point,it goes without syaing that the game is beautiful.  My only real gameplay complaint so far is that I like to be able to pull back for a third-person view (à la Oblivion).  I get a little claustrophobic inside Jack's head.

Earlier this month, a patch was released which addressed an issue with the image scaling to widescreens that caused the top and bottom of your view to be cut off.  I've not played since that update, but it looks like this game now needs a full review on the blog.

If I can tear myself away from Rock Band (I really want that Goat Head guitar for $66,666...), I'll post one during the holidays.

Thanks!

I think it's one of the best games I've played in years. I think that the amount of thought that went into it really made the difference. There is this air of "The Shining" to the game's various situations (The Little Sister reminds me of the twins in The Shining).

I love this VLOG, I hope Angry Puppy continues for a long time.

Franchises

Bioshock definitely seems to have more "soul" to it than other blockbusters. Some games feel like they were pushed out just to meet a cross-marketing deadline. The official X-Men game that came out a couple of summers ago, for instance, was pretty fun (especially Nightcrawler - I could play a full game as him if possible), but I think it took me only a couple of hours to complete the whole thing.

The CEO of Take Two, which brought us Bioshock, earlier this week said that they are "driven first and foremost by making the best games in the business. You can't do that on a clockwork type schedule", meaning that we shouldn't be seeing a rushed Bioshock 2 anytime soon.

Someone over there clearly has a rich imagination. It will be great if they are allowed to use it to think up exciting new games rather than sequels of previous hits.

sci fi lit

completely agree with all that MB! you should give House Atreides a shot - i was really pleased with it and moving on to House Harkonnen, the next one. i was also a big fan of Dick's stories, and it really bums me out to see most of them simplified and fronted by unimaginative male leads.

BTW i think we did cover Bioshock at some point... i love the design, it's probably the best-looking game out there right now. i like the creepy mood, and the concept and story too. the gameplay leaves a little to be desired though. i feel like i cant see enough of the screen, which is part of the issue, and the other thing is i find the big daddies (if that's what they're called) really annoying to kill. i probably just need to spend more time with it though.

my two cents says that The Simpsons was hands down the best game i played this past year, and it wins on sheer entertainment value, though it's a fun play too.

While reading the Heroes

While reading the Heroes comics on nbc.com this week, I was glad to see that Zach is still gay in the Heroes universe.

Elle made several funny references about his sexual orientation. ;)

ps: It's in 2 parts.
