In this week's abbreviated episode, Marc and Lee bring you a report on the Queer Media and Entertainment Conference (two words: Dawn. Wiener.), updates on the latest episodes of Lost, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica and details on voting for the Angry Puppy Hot Geek 10.
Oh, and there's a painting dog.
Check it out after the break!
Who and Hamlet.
Donna starts to get more to do over the next few episodes, and she comes up with some really important information.
'The Undiscovered Country', is actually (I'm 99% sure) a reference to death. It's from Hamlet.
I always found the cultural Imperialism thing in Star Trek odd... And it happens in all the series, just less obviously. (Or it could be that I notice everywhere it because I was an Imperial History/Postcolonial Lit Major)
British People Live the Future
I always assume that those who know all about Doctor Who are in the UK. I wish they would show it here simultaneously. I don't like being behind, but I also don't want to watch months in advance of anyone I know. :(
Speaking of the future, that "undiscovered country" reference is when Gorkon makes a toast to the "undiscovered country...the future!" or something like that. Spock points out that it's from Hamlet. Another thing that bothers me is why all these alien races are always quoting Shakespeare. Something tells me that he just isn't going to hold up in interplanetary translation.
Either way, it would be better if the undiscovered country were full of vampires or something. Not just death, peace, the future or whatever. ;)

I don't even watch Doctor
I don't even watch Doctor Who properly... I tend to miss it for ages and then catch up. I'm only just now watching the first few Ten episodes.
'You've never experienced Shakespeare until you've read it in the original Klingon.' Hey, if he weren't already human I'd be trying to claim him as well. Hamlet's an odd choice for a Klingon though... I'd expect them to be bigger fans of Titus Andronicus.
Wow. That's some cross-genre geekery right there.
(I'm in Ireland, but I won't hold thinking I'm from the UK against you ;))
Ack! My Bad!
Party foul!
OK, now I know that the UK and Ireland get Doctor Who at the same time. Is anyone else here watching somewhere else on a different schedule altogether?
Here in the States, you can see it on the Sci Fi Channel (we're a few months behind) or, oddly enough, on BBC-America, which is still playing Martha Episodes.
I'm now wondering how many AP viewers are actually watching Doctor Who on the same schedule as us.
And I'm sure there are some here who only like Doctor Who as it pertains to Torchwood. Or not at all. [ Glancing at Metabaron. ;) ]

3 weeks
The US is three weeks behind the UK's Doctor Who schedule. We both get a week off coming up due to Memorial Day for us, and Eurovision for them. I watch the eps the same day they're released, by....other means.
Also, Wooo! geek challenge.
Well, we get all the basic
Well, we get all the basic English channels here, so even though it isn't shown on Irish TV, we can still see them at the same time.
It's on at half seix on a Saturday evening, though, and I usually have something else to be doing with myself at that time. I tend to wait and watch them all in a big chunk, because my boyfriend records them all. If he didn't, I'd probably be stuck waiting for the DVDs
Wow
You really went all out with the sound track this time. LOL
Voted! Boy that was hard, to only pick three. I agree with a commenter on the blog, maybe you should do the Hot Geek 100 List. Ok, maybe 50.
I also thought there was something going on with Gaeta. At one point I thought: "something is comming out of that leg" but...sigh, they keep us guessing dont they.
Speaking of ridiculous amounts of money for art. Did you hear about eyaculating anime sculpture that went for $15 million+ a few days ago. Yeah, I know.
Cant wait to see the results of the list.
Ejaculating Sculpture
That sculpture is from the Murakami exhibit we talked about a few episodes ago. Marc mentioned it in the vlog, but we couldn't show any pictures, you know, because of the lawyers.
Now that there are photos all over the place online, I'll put a follow-up post on our blog. Check for that later tonight if you're interested to see it.

Oh, Yeah. The Soundtrack
Marc's "business trip" cut our time short this week, so we improvised on the music. ;)
Since there were no headlines, I'll post the things we would have mentioned on our blog over the weekend.

John Barrowman
I see John is the front runner in the Gay Geek Hot 100 and I'm wondering, am I the only person who finds him ultimately annoying?
He's just one big Velveeta factory in that way that only musical theatre pretty-boys can be.
I'm not annoyed by him, but
I'm more a fan of Barrowman than of Capt Jack
John Barrowman as a Talk Show Guest
Yeah, John Barrowman is great on talk shows - really quick on his feet.
Has anyone seen the game show he's hosting? How's that?

The Kids Are All Right
The nice thing about TKAAR
is that you root for the adults, because the kids are such snots. John is adorable and loving it, though. (The kids are so annoying, even he'sobviously rooting for the adults.)
I'm eagerly anticipating the new vlog -- I need to leave a comment about the fangirl attack at the blog, maybe get some of the regular people back (although wouldn't it be nice if those 700/1000/??? some gals started watching the vlog?)
It all stems from....
that doctor who episode where he was naked and people were wondering where he hid that gun
hid the gun...
No one needed to wonder anything, it was clear he pulled it out of his ass...
John is very clever and quick witted...great as a talk show host. He isn't as good as a guest. He reuses the same material over and over, but I still love him just the same. He is friggin gorgeous and that makes up for any downfallings. Also, he is absolutely the sweetest celeb to his fans. He has never blown off anyone looking for an autograph or a pic no matter how tired he is. That is to be commended in this bis.
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
Well...
We all pretty much figured that out, it's just entertaining to keep think about it ;-)
And I'm glad to see he's a good celeb. I actually get really turned off when I hear celebs aren't good to their fans.
Re-using talk show material
Well, I suppose RJ...
...you are right. I guess I am too hard on him. But, you are also right, the best interview ever was with Jonathan Ross. I have seen most of the interviews he has done in the last couple of years, and it does get to be too much when no new jokes get told. The interview is often about what ever current project he is working on, but how he talks about it could be fresh and different.
Like I said, I like him anyway, because he is so sweet to his fans and treats everyone with respect which is so refreshing in this day and age of diva jerks.
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
Anti-Jack
Tell your anti-Jack friends to go vote for Miss Hathaway. She's my secret favorite, and I'm so glad someone nominated her.

BSG, Doctor Who, etc
10 minute preview on www.SciFi.com was good today.
I hope BSG resolves itself well but I worry sometimes. I've heard that the budget per episode this season is less than the previous ones. We'll see how everything shakes out.
I've watched more of Doctor Who Season 1 and I'm just not getting into it. Sorry. The sillyness is overpowering. Billie Piper is annoying. The Science is more like fantasy. It just isn't for me.
Marc, thank you for the background info on Doctor Who and its history anyway.
The preview for tonight's BSG has Lee Adama acting like a total dick. Again. They just don't know what the hell to do with his character.
Hera is already getting information about the Cylons. She's drawing all these pretty "Sixes" in her coloring book.
Have you guys see the previews for "Dollhouse" (Joss Whedon's show) and Fringe? They don't look too promising to me. It's weird but, Joss Whedon and Neil Gaiman do better in their chosen genres than in science fiction. Joss Whedon's "Astonishing X-Men" was horribly bad. Not even John Cassaday's art could save it. The plots have been simplistic and boring and nonsensical. Neil Gaiman tried to do Marvel's "The Eternals" and also failed. I guess some knowledge of science really is important when writing science fiction. The Dollhouse seems kind of meh to me.
Eternals
I recently read a volume of The Eternals that I found on Marc's shelf. It was just OK.
If it were written by anyone else, it would have seeemed better, but that's not really fair to Mr. Gaiman.

Forgot to mention
Speed Racer is Getting Awful Reviews
Which makes me glad I liked it so much. ;) I was listening to a podcast review from Slate, and it was like they just didn't get it at all.
"It's too fast, too many colors, what's with the monkey? Wah wah wah."
Of course, the people from Slate make me think of that blog "Stuff White People Like", so there you go.
theAngryPuppy.com
speeeeeed!
yeah, yeah .. Gay Grandpa . . .anyhow, it is visually fantastic. . .LONG MOVIE . . .not a great story line and acted fair. . .the monkey probably had the best acting scenes.
Christina Ricci was better in "Casper". The Emil Hirsch (speed) character, I agree was reduced to a hairstyle, but it WAS nice hair!
Grandson walked out saying it was the best thing ever (typical for a car crazy 5-year old) and want's the dvd for xmas.
All in all it was worth going to see if only for the kid reactions. If I had seen this at 5 I think I would have been visually overloaded to another planet.
I'm not surprised...
...that everyone has hated Speed Racer except for me, Marc and 5-year-olds. ;)
It was a little long, though.
I haven't seen Casper in a while, but when we did our recent, impromptu list of her best movies, it didn't jump out at me. I'll Netflix it and reconsider. Thanks!

Campaign for Dave Tango as hottest geek
Woo!!
Thanks Marc for the nod on my nomination for Giles on your vlog!
I got into Doctor Who late so I did not know that the Ood were in a previous episode. However, when I saw the Ood I thought of the Pak'ma'ra on Babylon 5. Wondered if anyone else thought that.
I was blown away by this BSG episode. I guess because on how Barolay was killed. Yeah She and six fought, but all of a sudden she just drops dead after saying she was okay. I thought, what the frak just happened there?! Then Natalie turns around and kills Six, noting there is no resurrection ship, so that version is gone. Also, it was nice to see Nana Visitor on the show. When her scene came on, my partner and I said at the same time, KIRA! Yeah, we're a couple of geeks :-)
Angry Lesbians
I don't have anything constructive to add here, but had to say that for some reason the thought of Marc trapped in a room full of angry lesbians did make me laugh. Heh, heh, heh...
(So, they were dissing both gay channels? Oh, Logo isn't perfect, but it isn't all that bad, either; surely there is some good to be found. I've really been enjoying the short film programme; I would never have seen any of this material if not for Logo. And while I'm not thrilled at how Logo slashes the feature films they show to ribbons, I've often caught a few moments of a film on Logo that captures my interest. And then I go and rent the DVD, and so through the channel I've been introduced to many films I would never have heard about otherwise...)
I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
they hated EVERYTHING
Logo, here, Showtime, ABC, networks, cable, "male network executives", society at large, etc. Sure was a lot of angry packed into a kinda small room! For the record the women in the audience weren't angry at all and one of them even spoke out against the negativity on the panel.
But man was that was one angry panel.
angry lesbians...
... where those living anywhere on the same planet as this one?
then I pity you indeed ;)
And that's why
I don't identify myself as a feminist. That is freakin' scary shit. How do women like that expect to live in an integrated society with so much hate for everything? How can anyone be happy if that's how you see the world?
I love women (I am one), I think they're amazing and strong and complicated, and based on my own experience with family and friends, I think they're generally smarter than men. But for gods sake, the other day someone I know, who identifies as a feminist, went off on Steven Moffat and what a misogynist he is, and how they're not going to watch Doctor Who after he takes over. And based on what? From what I could tell, one comment about women being needy from an interview focused on Coupling, (which this person has never seen) extrapolated into critical feminist interpretations of all of Moffat's work on Who, e.g. how sexist it was that Sally's female friend married the guy she met in the past, and had a family and was happy.
And they wonder why people think they're paranoid and reactive.
