I was just wondering if you

I was just wondering if you watch Smallville and/or Supernatural? Maybe you have talked about these shows before, but I can't rememeber that you have, so that's why I was wondering.

Smallville & Supernatural

I've seen both but never really got into either.

About Smallville... honestly I've never been a fan of Superman. I like the idea of Smallville but can't seem to connect with the characters and writing. When it first came out I wanted so badly for it to be a male Buffy (which is what I thought they were going for; I think it was originally paired with Angel). But despite watching episodes on and off for the first few seasons I never got into it.

Supernatural... I watched the first three or four episodes and kind of liked it but lost interest and somehow never got around to checking it out again. I absolutely LOVED the imagery of the woman (their mother?) on the ceiling of fire - that was one of the most beautifully spooky and haunting images since the 180 degree spider version of the exorcist girl. Oh and i have a thing for Jensen Ackles. But I should give this one another shot - always thought it had potential.

I was the exact same way.  But tried again once the Season 1 dvd set came out, and glad I did.  It really is excellent once it starts really focusing on the mythology aspects of the show.  And that gun, oh that bad-ass gun!  Plus, yes, Jensen...mmmm...

Supernatural on iTunes

I also started and lost interest (independently of Marc), but they're available on iTunes, so maybe I'll give it a chance.

Thanks to all for the tips on where to start.

I recently started watching

I recently started watching Smallville, it took me a little more than a week to watch all seven seasons, but in the end I liked the show. There are a lot of things that I just laugh at because it's so badly done, but at the same time it's a really good show, one I think has gotten better since the stories moved away from Smallville and more to Metropolis. Anyway, with season 8 I think the whole show will look a lot different because many of the main characters will be gone, and I hope that next season will be the year that Clark becomes Superman.

Like you I only watched a few episodes of Supernatural when it first started, but then forgot about it, but now I'm hearing so many good things about that show, that it has improved a lot, so I'm definitely giving it another chance to see if it really is good.

Since next season is the last season of Smallville, you will get your wish. Ill bet it will the last thing we see in this show.

Supernatural

I liked the beginning of the first season under the dumb fun category, but the show started losing me towards the end when they started getting into the mythology of the show and didn't do it well.
At the beginning of the second season, I was mostly watching it with my partner... but then I thought it started getting really good. By the end of the second season I became totally hooked... so if it doesn't work for you right off try skipping ahead.

Anastasia Dualla

There is a lot of cool speculation on the Internet as to whom is the final Cylon.

This could be a red herring done intentionally by Ron Moore, but, if you Wiki the name Anastasia, it turns out that it means "resurrection".

It looks like the only good choice left. I mean, unless it's someone we've haven't actually met yet. Lee Adama's mother? Kara's mother(yes we kind of met her)? Billy, Roslin's former assistant? Laura Roslin herself? Roslin's spiritual advisor who died on Kobol? Callie?

What do you guys think? Who is your favorite candidate for the final Cylon?

There have been some rumors saying that the Actress who plays Dualla is going to be in the prequel "Caprica". They say she is the first Cylon.

Any way, just check out www.IO9.com for news about BSG. It's the best.

Final Cylon (and Is Gaeta Gay?)

Hey, Metabaron. I like io9 too.

I only have two complaints: I'm afraid their snarkiness is contagious and (in the beginning at least) they were not careful with spoiler warnings.

As for the final Cylon, I change my mind every day. I even thought it was Gaeta for a while. The character definitely has secrets. Did you see Paul Florez's article in The Advocate where he says:

"But I’m not the first to wager on Gaeta’s sexuality. During a radio interview in Portland, Ore., Galactica lead Katee Sackhoff, who plays the masculine Starbuck, was asked which character on the show she thought was gay. Sackhoff responded, “We think it’s Gaeta.… The blooper reel from every single season has Gaeta always hitting on someone [who is] a man.”"

If only.

Metabaron's picture

I'd love it if it were Gaeta

Unfortunately, the way that the cast and producers have made a joke of uncovering who the gay character is makes me think that we aren't going to get a gay character on BSG. In interviews, Ronald Moore seemed to want to avoid the issue altogether or not to commit to it in any way.

Netgeno (who posted below) has an excellent point. The way the "imaginary" Six manipulated the body of Baltar while he was completely limp. That is a very significant clue. It seems to me to be the inverse of my theory I posted on your last VLOG. That "Imaginary" Six is REAL but because everyone is a Cylon of some form or another, everyone can be made to completely ignore things and people. This would also explain that Season 1 Episode were Six appears to materialize on the Galactica while she did not interact with Baltar as her "Imaginary" self would.

These clues are really interesting yet contradictory. Too bad we have to wait until 2009 for all the answers.

I love the ICON in your postings. Now if only you could have one of the Alien's hands on your shoulder. Maybe even the sharp tail.

Buffy Sing-ALong (Alas)

It's too bad they aren't doing those Buffy sing-alongs anymore. If you never saw it, they showed "Once More, with Feeling", the musical episode, Rocky-Horror style with audience participation.

They all hated Dawn, though. Am I the only one who liked her?

It also puts everything in perspective. No matter how big a dorky fan you think you are, you won't be the biggest one there.

A few different geek points

First, as always, great vlog, and I love the t-shirt again. A couple questions:

Play Mario Kart Wii yet?

If you know anybody at SciFi - why don't they buy the HD rights to Dr. Who? Watching SciFi HD with a widescreen shot, pillarbox broadcast makes my big flatscreen look like the little flatpnael in the bathroom...

Is it wrong that I appreciate BSG is probably the best written, best acted, best planned thing on television, and yet I can't seem to connect with the show, despite watching religiously?

Know anything about the new Vampire show HBO is supposed to be doing? Done right, could be right up Lee's alley...

Is Doctor Who filmed in HD?

I remember reading an interview where it sounded like RTD was strongly against filming DW in HD (mostly, I presume, because of the production challenges it would add) so I've had the idea that there just isn't an HD version made, as strange as that sounds to me.

Ed Kennedy's picture

No HD? Seriously?

That's...sacrilege. BBC America is launching an HD channel this year, too. Maybe I'm biased, I design home theaters for a living (well, I used to, now I manage people who do it), but not producing something that's visually stunning in HD is a crime, and if it's not filmed in HD, why the letterboxing? That's just, well, abusive to viewers, shrinking the screen size on them. But thanks for the info. Now I guess I don't have to write SciFi channel a nasty letter...

A side note, I decided NOT to watch Speed Racer in the theater - we sell d-Box motion simulator chairs, and I was discussing the movie with their engineers and their plans to put you inside the race, feeling every spin and turn. I firmly plan to just wait for the BluRay, let myself in after hours, and watch at the store.

Speed Racer in Motio-vision

As you can tell, I loved the movie, but motio-vision is not for me! I'm getting queasy just thinking about it.
Ed Kennedy's picture

d-Box - motio-vision

LOL - it is an acquired taste: When I first tried it, I was hooked, I just could believe anyone would pay the price. Then it got kinda nauseating, especially on the wrong movie, such as Finding Nemo, SUrf's up, anything with water bobbing up and down.

But some films, like iRobot or Independence Day, are amazing with it, where the motion only hits when it's appropriate. The crash from Castaway make that awful film worth watching.

The engineers sound ambitious about Speed Racer though - scares the devil out of me in some ways, but I can't wait.

Lee's picture

No HD Tardis

I haven't played Mario Kart Wii yet, but I want to ASAP. Dear Nintendo, send me a copy. :) Anyone else played already?

Speaking of io9, they have a quote from Davies about HD Doctor Who:

"I had a terrible experience on Torchwood. There was a lack of training and there was no extra time or money... We'd have to stop and rebuild the tardis. The flaws would show and it would take a lot of money to fix it. So we won't move to HD while I'm there."

So, there is no HD version yet, though I have a feeling this is hyperbole on Davies' part.

We watched the Torchwood finale in HD (and "unedited for the US" according to the sleeve of the screener). The actors all still looked nice, but not so nice as they did in SD. Trust me, our vlog will NEVER be in HD. ;)

BSG: No, I think that's OK. I can't get into the current Batman reboot, even though absolutely everyone I know tells me that I'm insane. I appreciate that it's much better than any other film-version of the franchise, but it just doesn't interest me.

That vampire show is called True Blood. It's based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire books (which I haven't read) and is being produced by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under). That's all fine and good, but it also stars Anna Paquin as a telepathic waitress. Sounds interesting.

Ed Kennedy's picture

Mario Kart Wii

You really must invest in a copy, and a spare wheel for Marc - Ihaven't had so much fun with a game in years. I hardly know what I'm doing, but the controls are intuitive. The best part to me is that I can hop online, race a dozen people for 3 or 4 races in 20 minutes, then walk away - it doesn't eat your life like some games, but still provide that fun release of gaming. I'm addicted - my heart's racing by the end of a few races, so I've learned not to play right before bed. Simple game, but every race is different, since all the competitors change.

As always

Great vlog. I thoughrowly enjoy watching you banter about all stuff geeky. If I already saw Buffy, can I still apply for the reenactment show, that would be priceless.

Ahh, the final cylon.

So much speculation, the funniest one Ive heard is that Muffet will be introduced sometime in the season and be the final one. You know the mechanic dog of the original. Ok thats a joke.

But a few episodes ago, Dee popped into my mind in relation to this, I think it was the moment Lee was saying goodbye. There are things about her character and personality, and the way shes been off the radar latelly that could indicate shes the one.

Another one of my candidates is the self righteous, and probably man loving (fingers crossed), Gaeta.

The one thing that keeps poping in my mind is that when the "three" that kept resusitating herself saw the final cylon she said: "forgive me, I didnt know". So its someone who she had contact with and/or someone she crossed at some point. So that is a definite clue of who it might be.

The most interesting thing about the last episode, aside from Galens rant, was preciselly the moment Baltar gets "picked up", because that would mean his allucinations have a physical manifestation or that there is something inside him that could take control of his body like that. Up to this point I had renounced to that notion, since he was checked for chips and stuff in the first season and found nothing. Oh well the mistery continues.

Im glad to know Speed Racer is good, I must admit that the amount of color I have seen in the trailers made me think it could be or look cheap, but I was holding out untill the moment I saw it. This is an added incentive.

BTW, Marcs T shirt rocks, first thing I noticed. And if you think about it it goes well with the creature in the post card and the DW villains?. This vlog was so themed, geez.

Gaeta

Aha! See my post above.

If it does turns out to be Gaeta, I can pretend I knew it all along.

When Baltar was picked up like a puppet, the music didn't change (or something equally cheesy). It was a significant moment, and I like how they played it all nonchalantly.

What Doctor Who DVD should I start with?

Doctor Who is actually starting to kind of grow on me. I was wondering what DVD set would be good to start with. Perhaps the one with Christopher Eccelston?

I see they also have Doctor Who's from the distant past; like 1975 on DVD. Are these good?

Marc's picture

Doctor Who comma Where To Begin With

Someone just asked me this via our Facebook group too, and here's what I suggest:

Think of it really as two big series; the original ran 1963-1989 (first seven doctors) and then there's the new series starting in 2005 (ninth & tenth)... I recommend starting with Eccelston, the ninth, because the current series references a lot of events from his first season in '05 (sometimes identified as Doctor Who season one today). But the current episodes do contain a lot of obscure references to the first 26 years (yes really) of the show... don't worry though the new episodes explain most of it in context.

Know that there's a huge difference in quality between the new episodes and the older stuff; series from the 60s through 80s had famously awful production values. Also the older ones can get tedious because each episode was originally broadcast in four 25 minute segments so each episode was like the length of a movie. In order to sustain that length there was usually a lot of running around and repetitive plot elements.

When they started the new series with the 9th Doctor I think to some degree they assumed there would be a new generation of viewers so it's a good entry point because they explain everything for the new viewer. But there is a LOT of history in the new ones that make reference to the 1st through 7th doctors and really the only way to catch up fully is to watch them all (and you can't because a bunch of episodes were destroyed in the 70s and there's no way to see them).

When you watch the new ones they start off slow but there's actually a larger storyline that's subtle and building towards a really good finale. You'll also see the creation of Torchwood in there by Quen Victoria.

If you want to watch some of the old ones to get an idea of what they were like, check out the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker), who is considered the most iconic, and the 5th (Peter Davidson) - he's my favorite and I thought those episodes were the best.

Thanks

Thanks Marc, I appreciate it!

The history of Doctor Who sounds really interesting and the Websites you provide are AMAZING. The episodes of the 5th Doctor Who look cool, and I hope they're on DVD.

You're probably already aware but www.IDWPublishing.com has a Doctor Who Comic Book miniseries, of both the modern and earlier series.

I'll probably buy the Doctor Who DVD with Eccelston first. I'll let you know what I think of them. From what I've seen on the Sci-Fi channel recently (There was a mini-marathon of some kind) Doctor Who seems far less constrained, creatively, than the various Star Trek series, which is a very good thing in eyes.

All caught up.

I finally watched all your vlogs.  Great work guys.  I love the t-shirts too.  Ever see the shirts on woot.com?

BSG: I have to admit, my partner was the one owho got me into BSG.  At first I thought it was a bit too dark, seeing the body count and how there seems to be almost no hope for the human race.  I think it was my past experience with the old BSG back when I was a kid.  However, afterwards, I really got into the show.  The draw for me especially is the Cylon’s monotheism versus the human’s polytheism and how it is playing out this season.

Doctor Who:  I am looking for that one word that describes the adipose babies.  I actually felt bad for Ms Foster as well as laughed when she was dropped.  Does that make the scene hilarious and disturbing or just me?

Finally, I need to see Addams Family just to see those Christina Ricci scenes.  I’m really glad you mentioned 200 cigarettes, great movie.   Oh and what about a list of your favorite Buffy episodes?

You should see Terra

I'm surprised you didn't check out the Tribeca Film Festival - but maybe you're too busy ;) - they showed a CGI movie this year called Terra. Basically it's about a world named Terra by the human invaders, the natives there - a peaceful race who've learned from their past mistakes - exist in a world with a helium atmosphere so that in coordination with its alien environment it shows stunning animals and the natives who can fly through the air. I'd highly recommend it if/when it comes on DVD
