In the long-awaited return of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee take their title literally in an episode filled with puppies. The guys introduce their new mascot, and run down a list of the greatest sci-fi dogs.
But that's not all! Jumping species, the fellas get a little bat-crazy in reviewing The Dark Knight and a host of other bat-related titles. Plus, Dr. Horrible, Dr. Who, a new Mystery Geek Challenge, and much more!
Check it out after the break!
Kodos
Who was named (along with
Ding Ding Ding!
That's the sound of No-Prizes being handed out to KillerVirgo and Jakob - nice work!
We named him Kodos because he slobbered on Lee in the taxi ride all the way home from the shelter, and we were trying to think of something drooly. And even though he only has four legs right now it feels like six tentacles.
And extra-special no-prize to Jakob for calling out the source of the name!
Kodos and Kang
Sweet. You can get more info here: Kodos at Memory Alpha

Stream of Conciousness.
I bought Gotham Knight in a double pack with Batman Begins. I really enjoyed it, I liked all of the stories, unlike The Animatrix.
K-9 is mostly absent from TSJA because he's getting his own show.
Heh, loved your Bad Wolf joke. Was the one on Lee's shirt in a different language.
So happy to see a new Vlog form you guys!
Bad Wolf = Плохой Волк
Yeah, that one wasn't supposed to go up first. :D
I wanted it in Chinese for "Turn Left", but Russian had to do.
theAngryPuppy.com

turn left in Chinese is 左转 ,and bad wolf is 坏狼 XD
Woo Hoo! Thanks!
I read that the Chinese in "Turn Left" was all wrong, including some upside-down characters. Good thing I didn't just copy it. ;)
theAngryPuppy.com
But was it China?
It could have been a wacky parallel China-type planet, with not-Chinese-really writing.
Or, as I suspected the minute I saw it, the TARDIS landed in the Firefly-universe.
Shan Shen
No, it was the planet Shan Shen. There was some buzz online about it being the typical non-white-people-have-magical-powers-that-they-can-use-on-white-people story.
I thought it was more of the Firefly idea, that it was perhaps a planet colony influenced by Chinese culture , but not necessarily recognizable to modern Chinese.
I'm going out of my way to stay out of controversies these days, though, so Kodos and I will be over here in the corner for a while. :D

Space travelling
the typical non-white-people-have-magical-powers-that-they-can-use-on-white-people story
I figured it was more like, "You know where we haven't been yet? China." on the part of the designers and producers. (I would like to see them genuinely go to some modern cities other than London, or even historical cities that aren't UK-based. Pompeii was nice for that.)
Oh, don't get me started...
- On the Batman show from the 60's, guys, I hate it with a passion! And as far as the movie goes, just the image of batman running around the pier with a silly bomb that's "on the verge of exploding" for like half an hour...Geez. Sorry, I'm a grumpy old bitch. ;)
- I liked Dr. Horrible, especially the first two episodes. I kinda think they lost their hand a bit on the third, which was more depressing than funny, but I LOVED Neil Patrick Harris. I know of him mostly from what I read on the internet, as none of his shows have had a particularly wide exposure in Brazil, but I really grew to love Dr. Horrible quite quickly. Nathan Fillion was hilarious as well!
- Red Son is an impressive piece of work, but I think the treatment of Wonder Woman on that book is unexcusable! Really, it's SO Mark Millar I don't even know why I was surprised, but still...
That series spawned some WAY COOL action figures, though!
- Kodos is ADORABLE! He seemed a bit camera-shy, but I guess you guys must've put too much pressure on his first outing...lol
Another GREAT episode, guys, congratulations!
Best,
J.
P.S.: Don't know if you'll include dogs from comics on your list, but #1 from the WE3 book MUST make the list!
"I walk with dignity. I step with pride."
Camp
Batman: I like campy stuff, but, I agree with you. Batman: The Movie is a little irritating to watch.
DHSAB: I heard some buzz that there might be a continuation of Doctor Horrible, but (without giving anything away ) I'm curious how they would do that considering the end of Act III.
Red Son: Which part of Wonder Woman's treatment bothered you exactly? I want a Batmankoff action figure, btw.
Kodos: We taped this very late at night last week. I think he wanted to sleep!
I haven't read WE3, but it's now on my list.
theAngryPuppy.com
What bothered me most
What bothered me most about how Millar treated WW on Red Son was that she was there mostly as a "tee-hee"-type of girl at first, only to be left a near midless husk at the end of the story. She goes from fawning over Superman to mindlessly following him to being braindead and that's her role in the story. She doesn't even get to die heroically, idealistically like Batman.
The Batman figure is awesome, but I think the Superman one is the best of the bunch. Wonder Woman and Bizarro complete the set. Me want.
And, Lee, by all means, go after WE3. AMAZING story, beautiful art, and the most realistic super-cyborg-animals you'll find in a comic. No, really.
Best,
J.

Title of Show
Nice meeting you last week Marc (at the OutTraveler event on Thursday). Hope you enjoyed being recognized!
Have you guys heard of a musical called [title of show]? I think you'd love it, even if you're not really into Broadway. It's pretty much a musical tribute to gay geekdom (one character collects playbills but only from obscure Broadway flops) and the creative process. The plot is very meta (its about writing a show that is the show that you are seeing right now) and the dialogue is very Whedonesqe. You should def review it for your blog.
Oh and there's a song called "Die Vampire, Die" in it.
Yikes - I'm practically a vlog celebrity!
I think I'll have to be recognized a couple more times before I qualify, then it's a short step to D celebrity status on a VH1 reality show!
Actually John Polly from NewNowNext.com and The Heidi Chronicles vlog was just telling me I would love [title of show]. I was thinking of getting tickets and surprising Lee so nobody tell him. Oops - I guess I should have warned about spoilers.
I think I'm sold based on the name of the song. One of my favorite Simpsons jokes was Sideshow Bob explaining to his parole board that his giant tattoo that reads "Die Bart, Die" actually innocently translates from German, "The Bart, The".
Oh, Jesus, Now He'll Never Shut Up
Oops, I mean, oh, huzzah! Someone recognized Marc from the vlog! :D
theAngryPuppy.com
good to have you back guys,
good to have you back guys, started to miss you :-)
and your new puppy - awww - I want one too now. One that's quiet and sweet like yours - not like the jack russels I'm used to....
actually "die Bart, die" translates as "the beard, the" ("the" being the female and in this case wrong article)
"die vampire, die" would almost make sense: "the vampires , the"
Bad wolf in german would be "böser Wolf" by the way - allthough they actually translated it (badly ;-) ) in one of the first new series with "schlechter Wolf"
Nice to hear, you're into cheap television at the moment too, Lee, though mine is cheaper, very much cheaper ;-)
To be honest I still do watch Charmed from time to time because they keep repeating it permanently for some reason. I enjoyed it for quite a time when it was originally shown - though mainly because of the girls clothes ;). And Julian McMahon.
No - honestly - it didn't come near Buffy of course - but I liked it.
Just the way they usually got rid of the monsters very quickly- just by reading some more or less ridiculous poem started to annoy me after a couple of episodes.
The Power of 3 Will Set You Free
The rhyming on Charmed is ridiculous, but I do remember an episode where Paige made a spell as a haiku instead. Oh, and in reference to the good/evil thing, I just watched the episode where Wyatt comes back as a 25 year old, and we see both a good and bad version.
Good Wyatt: letterman jacket, clean-shaven, short hair, could be on Dawson's Creek
Bad Wyatt: black leather, goatee, long hair, could be from the Star Trek Mirror Universe
I think the simplicity of the morality is one of the reasons I find it easy to watch while doing other things. It's on 4 times a day on TNT (season 4 in the mornings and season 7 or so in the evenings). I DVR all of them and just let them play while I'm working at my computer. You don't really have to pay much attention.
Oh, yeah, and I have a crush on Zankou (Oded Fehr). Julian McMahon is also nice to look at, but I find it hard to believe that demons would buzz their chest hair.
theAngryPuppy.com
I love to work at my
I love to work at my computer or do other things while listening to tv, too. Even prefer it to listening to music. Strictly english tv though when I have to concentrate (german would distract me too much) and I guess I will buy a Charmed-complete-series-box when one will be available and cheap - because it will provide good background-noises. I keep watching/hearing Buffy and Bab5 because I know every episode by heart and so don't have to watch it.
Its a bit of a problem with new episodes/series though. I usually don't have the time to watch and just listening won't do. So allthough I bought the angel complete-series-box almost a year ago - I'm still stuck in series 3.
Well, and if tv doesn't do - I also have Stephen Fry imprisioned inside my computer and he'll read Harry Potter to me whenever I want him too.
Angel
I know what you mean about getting distracted. I tried to use Angel as my background noise (so that Marc wouldn't laugh at me anymore). I kept getting sucked into the story.
Now I only catch the last few minutes since it's on right before Charmed (at like 6 am), but that also makes me want to watch the whole thing again.
theAngryPuppy.com
Ah charmed...
I was a big fan of the show... I think it had something to do with Leo more than anything else.
I can see how the morality is simplified, but there is just something about the feeling of know where everyone stands. Don't get me wrong I love story lines where a character's morals is completely nebulous, keeping you on your toes. I noticed the later seasons started to have story arcs that would last for the entire season or half way through and i really liked those.
I think i heard somewhere that the budget for Charmed was cut back, the earlier episodes had people in costumes like the woogieman and abraxas (don't ask how i remembered the demons) but after wards they had to make do with having people dress in black or red to show they were demonic. Even Julian McMahon had a demonic double to begin with but then they just showed red flaming eyes.
I second the [title of show] suggestion...
...so that I can hear you start incorporating the phrase "doughnuts for dinner" in your vlogs.
Although the song, "Die, Vampire Die!" isn't about anything sci-fi related at all, your vlog is still so very [title of show]!

...
You are back!
Great to have you back guys. And with a new addition to the family. Kodos is so very cute.
Lots of stuff in the last three weeks. Three weeks people, what gives?
Loved this four past episodes of DW. But Midnight just took the price for me. I also used the word fun to describe it and someone kindly informed me: it was disturbing, not fun. But thats what made it fun for me. Leave it to RTD to put such a heavy commentary on human nature and make it so fun.
Apart from Sky (wasnt Lesley Sharp fantastic?), the episode was very gay coded. Betty Boop and Rafaella Carra?. I saw it with a couple of gay friends and the moment Rafaella Carra poped up on the crafts TV we just bursted out laughing in unison. I reckon that was a definite nod to european and latinamerican gays since she is such a HUGE gay icon. I dont think that was a coincidence.
I cant really say anything about Journeys End, but Stolen Earth was real fun. One thing that just didnt do it for me was this Rose centric storyline, Ive never been a fan of Rose, so aside from that it was great.
Dr. Horrible was great too. I hear all this talk about the last episode being a downer. But that was the point, wasnt it? Neil Patrick Harris really did shine on this one. I hear some are trying to get it to the CW, but that is a fan movement. It would be interesting to see if this experiment Whedon tried to make will work.
The Dark Knight was great. Best superhero movie Ive seen in a while.
Still working on the challenge.
Ugh sorry - been on the road!
Ja, I was about to suggest it

Mystery Geek Challenge
Im going to go on a limb and am probably totally wrong but maybe the list has to do with simpsons characters or matt groening characters because of the way you said "Snowball"...
so I heard:
1.) Snowball (Lisa's cat)
2.) Zap Brannigan
3.) Kodos (Kang's significant other)
4.) Cookie [Kwan] (Number one on the West side!) * I luv Cookie*
....and thats what I heard...im probably way off
Also I like the Bad Wolf's popping up everywhere, indeed Rose is up to her old tricks I see.
thanks for another great Vlog guys!
http://www.youtube.com/user/HalunkeXGast84
Ah very observant! - but it's not Simpsons characters
It's Cats!
I think...
Snowball from the simpsons
Morris the cat from the cat food commercials
Schrödinger's Cat
Catwoman
Lion-O from the Thundercats
Stimpy from Ren and Stimpy
i think i heard scratchy also from the simpsons but that may have been scratching lol
Billie Pipers voice
Billie Piper said that a few days before filming started she freaked out a little bit about being able to do the voice again after so long. Maybe she just was over-thinking it and thats why it sounds a bit off.
MGC I think it's cats. Snowball of course, Mr. Bigglesworth, Azrael, Schrodinger's cat, Catwoman, Midnight, Lion-O, Stimpy and um...the caty snark of Stargate Atlantis?
That, plus
There's been a wierd amount
There's been a wierd amount of DHSAB backlash on certain parts of the internet. A few people screaming about how *dare* Joss write a 45-minutes film with less-then-spectacular female character development. I think they were missing the point, that it was an homage of supervillian backstories, not a pastiche, and that every character in the whole thing, aside from Horrible, was simply a stock character there to fulfil a specific role in that story. It wasn't supposed to be about all of them, just him.
This is why I have to stay away from certain parts of the internet.
Captain Hammer
Because Captain Hammer was such a well-rounded character?
They were all pretty 2.5 dimensional (complete stereotypes, but on purpose, with an almost hidden dimension), and what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Or vice versa, I suppose.
On a somewhat related note, did anyone else see that video clip of Felicia Day Twittering while sitting on some Comic-Con panel? Hilarious.
theAngryPuppy.com
Exactly. Joss fans are scary
Oh, and the 4th Doctor and
Oh, and the 4th Doctor and 2nd Romana were never explicitly in a relationship. Tom baker and Lala Ward were married soon afterwards, they had excellent chemistry, and a lot of people read into it, but they were never officially a couple.
But the Doctor's definitely been married once, at least, and has at least one child. Never happened on screen, but the 10th Doctor's referenced it once or twice, and the first companion ever was his grandaughter.

Hooray, you're back.
And with an adorable puppy too.
I've missed your vlog even though I have no idea what you're talking about most of the time except, of course, for Doctor Who. Talking about the Doctor's relationships, in the very first series with William Hartnell he had his granddaughter Susan with him so I imagine he had been married but I don't think they mention who Susan's parents are.
I can't wait to hear what you think of the last two episodes, I especially loved the next episode 'the stolen earth'. Oh, and how could you put Scooby Doo before K9?
Scooby Doo / Spaced / Simon Pegg
Apropos of almost nothing, did anyone watch that Simon Pegg series Spaced?
We're going to talk about it a little in the next episode (season 1 is just out on DVD), but there was a funny Scooby Doo reference in one of the first episodes. I haven't seen everything yet, but I don't remember a K-9 reference.
So, that's why, I guess?
theAngryPuppy.com
I love Spaced! The
Welcome back!
I'll second (or third or fourth?) the hearty welcome back. I've missed my weekly dose of sci-fi snarkiness!
Marc are you SURE about Romana and the Doctor being in a relationship? They were both Time Lords, but I don't remember them actually being involved. What I do remember is that Tom Baker married Lalla Ward, the actress who played Romana after she regenerated.
I guess I need to buck the trend a bit in saying that I was a bit disappointed in "Midnight." Don't know why exactly... just didn't do it for me. Although for some reason I DO love that RTD made Tennant and Lesley Sharp memorize Pi to 30 decimal places... and then recite it simultaneously. That should be outlawed by the Geneva Conventions as inhumane treatment of actors!
"Turn Left," however, was a great episode. I love how Catherine Tate manages to show the "never met the Doctor" Donna as her original shallow, self-centered Donna and really show how the Doctor manages to bring out the best in his companions... although I think you do see a bit of that character growth in Donna by the end of the episode as well. I guess it's the situations that the Doctor places his companions in that forces their growth and in a normal life, Donna would have never been given that chance to grow. Can't wait for your review of the episode that just aired here in the States.
Can't comment on "The Dark Knight" since I haven't seen it yet, but I'm definitely planning to. I guess I'm with Lee on this one in that I never got into Batman that much (more of a Marvel guy myself... except for the Flash who I guess I had a bit of a crush on growing up!)
Congrats on the new mascot. I'm more of a cat person myself having just adopted two more cats from the ASPCA (so THANKS for this week's challenge!), but Kodos looks SOOO cute!
On bats and puppies
Yes on Doctor & Romana - see my other post just above, and sorry about that! Totally agree on Turn Left, and excellent point about the finer degrees of characterization there.
Honestly I was never a huge DC fan either with the exception of the Vertigo titles of course, and certain odd titles that I really enjoyed like All-Star Squadron and for some reason the original Batman and the Outsiders. But Dark Knight's pretty great and definitely worth seeing. That said I'm trying not to overhype or anything.
Kodos is totally cute and even cuter when he's awake - we'll try to tape the next one before his bedtime!
Oops... didn't type quickly enough
Happy to see you guys again!
You have been missed, and a big welcome to Kodos! Great vlog, as always - I can't wait to hear your takes on the final Doctor Who episodes of the season. Love the "Awesome Dogs" list (and thank you for not mentioning Scrappy Doo), but I have to stand up for my favorite that didn't make the list:
Bandit deserves mention, if only for the fact that he's the watchdog of the first gay interracial family of cartoons. Besides, how many other dogs on the list can water-ski and scuba dive, not to mention swim for help to rescue his family? Bandit rules!
Agreed on Bandit!
but a LOT of "awesome" dogs seem to be missing from the all-too-short list:
- Mr. Peabody ("...and Sherman")
- Paddlefoot ("Clutch Cargo")
- Frank ("Men In Black")
- Astro (The Jetsons)
- Commander K-9 ("Marvin the Martian")
and my all-time favorite, awesome-est "geek" dog:-Sibelius

Wallace & Gromit = DoublePlusGood
I just want to take this opportunity to totally distance myself from that Marc guy regarding Wallace & Gromit.
That is all.

Though I'm ashamed to admit that - when I tried to think of suitable dogs I didn't think of gromit - allthough he permanently waves at me from one of my bookshelves...
