In this special Serial Killers Edition of Angry Puppy, join Marc and
Lee for a review of the new HBO vampire series True Blood and their
new favorite anime, Death Note.
See more homicide and mayhem in Asylum, Shrooms and the second season of Dexter on DVD.
And finally, find considerably less manslaughter in their
inappropriately-scheduled reviews of WiiFit and MyScoopbox.
Check it out after the break!

YAY! IFB!
I actually didn't particularly like Shrooms, and I knew I wouldn't, but I saw it anyway, because I see pretty much everything the Irish Film Board supports, because our film industry has taken some serious hits over the last decade, and it needs to be supported any way it can. So thanks for supporting it, inadventantly though it may have been.
Oh, and geek-connection! The voice of L in the dubs of Death Note is done by Allesdandro Julliani (Gaeta in BSG).
Awesome geek connection!
Gaeta! Of course!
Now that you've said that, I can't help but hear Gaeta in there.
I like Alessandro Juliani even more now. And I still think he or his leg is going to be a Cylon (or something).

It's probably just because
MGC
Kicks, Chex, Special K, Cheerios. Breakfast Cereals.
No doubt there's more but half the ones I got I only know from American movies. :)
Shout out to Randommer, my fellow geek Irish gayrod.
Haven't seen Shrooms yet (I'm still reluctant to watch Irish made Horror after that trend for cheep, truly wofull Irish zombie movies post Shaun Of The Dead) but I'll get to it.
Shrooms
I'll hold off on the MGC!
In retrospect, I think I was a little too down on Shrooms. I still wouldn't say it's fantastic, but we talked about Asylum first, and that set the tone for the rest of the segment. :D

This week's Mystery Geek Challenge winner...
...is Ben Weldon, who despite his self-identified unfamiliarity with American breakfast options, correctly identified this week's list and 4 of the items on it.
The list was Breakfast Cereal (yes -- get it, because we're so clever) and there were 13 kinds hidden in the vlog:
1. Kix
2. Wheaties
3. Balance
4. Fruite Brute
5. Puffins
6. Chex
7. Total
8. Life
9. Smart Start
10. Trix
11. Cream of Wheat
12. Special K
13. Cheerios
Indirect Sandman reference?
In A Doll's House, isn't the serial killers' convention disguised as a meeting of cereal salesmen?
No, not "distant gay traces" -- it's distingué traces!
Sandman Reference
The sign in front of the hotel said "Cereal Convention" or something like that. God, wasn't that a funny storyline? I especially loved the panel discussions, especially the one about women in serial killing!
Dog Soup: "I'm tired of women in our line being stereotyped as black widows or killer nurses (she says as she sits flanked by a widow and a nurse who glare angrily). I'm a woman and I'm a serial killer and I'm proud of it!"
OMG yes the serial killer convention is brilliant
I want your puppy
you really have the most patient puppy in the whole wide world, don't you? awww
Sorry, I don't have much constructive to say as I - as usual - don't know much of what you're talking about but - as usual - enjoyed it very much. I just saw one episode of primeval and couldn't bring myself to watch more. I tend to glorify british tv but am brought back down to earth by shows like that on a regular basis (the latest being Robin Hood -*shudder* - and I intended to like it because it has Richard Armitage in it *swoon*)
p.s. I'm sorry Lee - that mask doesn't convince me ;-)
The Magic of Editing / Robin Hood
Wow. If you saw Kodos on the street, "patient" would be the last thing you'd use to describe him. Thank you, Final Cut Pro!
I'll probably still keep watching Primeval as background noise à la Charmed, but I don't think we'll be mentioning it again in the vlog unless something compelling happens in later episodes.
Is Robin Hood bad? I've been meaning to try it out, probably for the same reasons you did!
Hmmm, no on the mask, eh? How about a hockey mask or a spray painted William Shatner Halloween costume?
theAngryPuppy.com
Robin Hood vs Artic Monkeys
My problem was that I didn't 'get' the guy who plays Robin (although - no rather because - he's cute) - didn't get him at all. And same can be said for all of his bunch. Wasn't even impressed with the guy who played that creepy son in "family of blood" in "Doctor Who". I read through some forums and it seems like Armitage actually is the best thing on the show and someone compared the Robin Hood gang to "Arctic Monkeys" put into hoods. From what I've seen I agree. They are far too modern looking young man and women and just don't fit into the medieval environment.
Puppy: ah okay... I understand! You can keep him then!
Mask: how about just no mask at all? ;-)
Jason Connery
I feel the need to show off
And what about
The TV movie where he played Ian Fleming?
I almost didn't recognize him when he showed up in an awfule Wishmaster movie years later.
Wishmaster!
That's Wishmaster 3, right? Those movies are so awful they loop around to good and back to awful three times.
The only scene I can remember off-hand (not sure which movie) is where some guy says "Go screw yourself!", and somehow the genie turns that into a wish and makes the guy, well, er, you kind of have to see it. I'm not sure how that works anatomically, but it certainly was something I hadn't seen in a horror movie before.
theAngryPuppy.com
jason connery, yeah
Loves of a Blonde
Don't you hate it when that happens?
I'm going to feel really stupid when this is something obvious, but who is that in your icon this week?
theAngryPuppy.com
moomins :)
umm - I don't hate to fall in love with blondes - for some reason it just doesn't happen that often and never works ;-) (and it just happens about once every ten years or so with decreasing frequency)
My avatar is Little My of the wonderful Moomins-stories. I just found out that it actually is something LGBT-related as the Moomin-author - the late Tove Jansson lived with a woman. There you go. I remember that - as a child - I was totally annoyed by Littly My because she was a typical little sister (like I had one) - but now I think she was the best female character in the moomin-verse (Moominmamma and Snork Maiden are shown as quite traditionally
boringfemales)There are books of them available (I remember vividly reading them on one of our holidays when I was around 10 ) and the legendary german Marionette Theatre "Augsburger Puppenkiste" did a few of their stories and there was a japanese animation-series that maybe is the best known today.
edit: oh - and Snufkin was maybe the first crush of my life (next to Lindgren's Jonathan Lionheart - edit2: he was a blonde, too :D )
True Blood
But first...
Did everyone miss the "Silence of the Lambs" themed episode of "Project Runway"?
?...
Just kidding. When Afterelton.com did their top 50 gay movies, I was, at the time, pissed off and offered "Silence of the Lambs" for the serial killer "Buffalo Bill". Apparently they didn't find it funny.

TRUE BLOOD IS REALLY GOOD. I urge everyone to see it. I love Lafayette and Tara. I hope they're given more prominent roles. Sam is probably a Werewolf or Weredog.
Has everyone heard? Joss Whedon's Dollhouse is in trouble. They've stopped production for two-weeks so that the suits at Fox can find a way to screw-up the show. Burn me once shame on you. Burn me twice... never watch Fox again.
Hellblazer will have a New Hardcover called "Pandemonium" coming FEBRUARY 2009.
Hellblazer has a new writer "Simon Oliver". He wrote "The Exterminators" so it should be good.
There's a weird Lovecraftian comic book series from AVATAR Press called "Gravel" it's written by Warren Ellis. I've really enjoyed it so far. I think everyone should check it out. It's like Hellblazer with a huge flavor of Lovecraft.
It was a nice surprise "Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles" Season 2 premiere that Shirley Manson is a T-1000 Liquid Metal Terminator. This season should be an improvement over season 1. Oh, she also sang the song of the opening sequence.
Fringe was shockingly boring. Is anyone really looking for another impenetrable and interminable LOST-type "plot". I swear, the cybernetic arm that the Massive Dynamics executive revealed she had IS EXACTLY THE KIND of Throw-away cool thing that NEVER LEAD ANYWHERE that drove me away from LOST. I'll stick with True Blood - it has a much better pedigree.
Does anyone remember "The Real Ghostbusters" Cartoon? The Complete Series DVD Set is being released this November. I remember liking the "Collect Call of Cthulhu" episode. Somehow I doubt that this series could hold up all these years.
The Graveyard Book is a New Novel by Neil Gaiman. It is described as a ghost, supernatural version of "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. It is available on SEPTEMBER 30th 2008.
Harmony is coming back to Buffy. Jane Espenson's forthcoming Issues of Buffy Season eight will feature Harmony and her Vampiric Toy Dogs. This is GOING TO BE FUNNY.
MetaStream!
Hey, Metabaron! Lots of interesting topics there.
Silence of the Lambs as a gay movie: Don't forget Jodie Foster, but you didn't hear it from me. ;)
True Blood: So far I'm really into it. Anna Paquin is great in the role, both as an actress and for the fact that she looks "real". I love that they let her keep the gap in her teeth instead of DawsonsCreeking her. Did they cover that up in X-Men or did Rogue just never smile? I had suspicions about Sam/the dog too, but I want to see more. Episode 2 is also good, but we watched them in a row, so the stories blend together. I'm afraid to say anything that might spoil it! I do remember thinking there was more action in the second hour.
Dollhouse: Yeah, I saw that news. I think I FriendFeeded (FriendFed?) it. Microblogging, FTW. And wasn't it just this week that we found out Amy Acker was going to be in the cast? Big bummer if they screw it up.
Thanks for the Hellblazer and Gravel info. I hadn't heard of Gravel, but I'll be looking into it now. Your description intrigues me.
We'll be talking about Terminator and Fringe in the next episode (and we're now back on a weekly schedule). I will say that I'm really into Terminator again. You may reall that I got bored about halfway through last season.
The Graveyard Book has a great cover. The people over at BoingBoing.net have featured it a couple of times. Gaiman works with such great visual artists.
Harmony back to Buffy! Yes, yes, yes. But will she translate from the screen to the page? Part of her, um, "charm" was Mercedes MacNab's excellent performance.

Best fight ever
Second Best Fight Ever?
I'd like to nominate another Harmony battle. Remember Tamika, the vampire who wanted Harmony's job on Angel?
Tamika might have won if she hadn't threatened to smash Harmony's unicorns.
Good times, good times...
theAngryPuppy.com
There were two Harmony/Xander showdowns
There was that hilliarious one in Season 4. And then the one in Season 5 where they trade insults at the threshold of Buffy's home. But Dawn screws up everything by inadvertently inviting Harmony inside.
Yeah, "Harm's Way" was one of the best episodes of Angel Season 5. Harmony's attempts to socialize with Fred were great. The series finale also had a great Harmony moment when Angel confronts Harmony. "You're betraying me now as we're speaking!"
Harmony-"That's because you never had any confidence in me!"
It was much more funny that this flattened out quote here.
This is my first time
This is my first time watching a vlog on AE in some months, I typically just don't have the patience for listening to people talk when I can read so much faster, but you guys are clearly awesome at this and I'm just going to have live with the fact that I am tardy to the party.
So you guys like Death Note, eh? Hail to the foot massage that launched a thousand slash-fics. What other anime do you like, aside from Bepop? I spend way too much time watching anime (mostly because it's the closest thing to gay-action-cartoons available, well, anywhere) and I liked Death Note well enough, but I never became enamored of it like a lot of my friends did.
Oh, and Harmony is so made of epic win, I can't wait for the tpb with her in it.
Welcome to the Party! / Anime Sugestions
Hey, Jacob! Thanks for watching! Don't go back through the old episodes. We've been doing this almost a year now, and I fear what I'll see if I take that stroll down memory lane. :D
Marc's the more anime-oriented one, though I'm coming around quickly. Unless, of course, you count Ranma 1/2, which I've loved forever. Do you have any picks to recommend? That goes for anyone else too. My Netflix is full, but I can probably squeeze another series or two in there.
Oh, and I noticed your great icon over in the NPH thread, but I thought I was being loud enough over there, so I didn't comment on it. Did you make it?

I am planning to show the 2001 movie version of "Bebop" for my Sci Fi class. Is it good?
Corgis in Space
The Cowboy Bebop movie is very good but you may want to show something from earlier in the series instead. The film takes place at the end of the series, and while it can be understood by people not familiar with the story, it's a spoiler in some respects and it's best that people watch the series first.
NY Anime Festival
Erk, I forgot to mention that we plan to go to the NY Anime Festival later this month at the Javits Center. If anyone has suggestions on things to look out for, we'd much appreciate it!
If I could get Marc to dress up as Ryuk, that would be the BEST. THING. EVER.

Dexter!
I'm so glad you love Dexter too! It's so funny, I was really against it when I first heard about it, even with the presence of Michael C. Hall (love Six Feet Under). It actually got to the point where my friends sat me down and showed me the first episode. After that I got what they were talking about and I was hooked. The opening title music is just on the edge of being insane, it kind of dances about ridiculously, I love it.
Did you guys hear about the Torchwood radio play we had on BBC Radio 4? It was broadcast to commemorate the hadron super collider project, and it was set at CERN. I hope you got to hear it (or will get to hear it), it was really good!
Thanks so much for the vlogs guys, they're so great!
"And You Thought Torchwood Couldn't Get Any Worse"
I didn't hear it, but I heard about it on io9.
And You Thought Torchwood Couldn't Get Any Worse
I like the site, but I have different taste than most of their authors. This headline means I'd probably love the radio show.
theAngryPuppy.com
Okay, I have to say it
I really liked Captain Jack on Dr. Who, but it has become painfully apparent that he is best served in small doses. John Barrowman is a very melodramatic presentational type of actor and, while I'm sure he's a great Curly or Billy Bigelow, he's pretty awful as the lead actor in a television series. Even on that radio show, he can't help but overact.
If the HD wasn't so beautiful, and if I wasn't an eternal optimist, I would've been done with Torchwood a long time ago.
Okay everyone, I'm ready: Heap on the abuse.
Well I liked it but then I
Well I liked it but then I love anything Doctor Who/Torchwood related.
It was a bit daft now and then but then Doctor Who and Torchwood are silly aren't they? That's partly what I like about them.
I thought the other day that Torchwood 3 might include the Slitheen but I can't remember why. Perhaps I dreamt it.
Dexter and True Blood
Totally agree with you both - hot as you are! - Somehow I have watched both seasons of Dexter online - it can be done! Michael C Hall is such a good actor and he made the series! So weird that his sister is really more bent than he is.
So now we get to True Blood. Are you not allowed to name the totally hot Ryan Kwanten as the (personal interpretation) sexual vampire - get my drift? And Sam is something other than a weredog/wolf - just my total geek/fantasy fan instincts. Never read the books from the series.
Thanks mister!

Just wanted to suggest a couple shows worth checking out in the anime/ani-gay world. I've found personal enjoyment in series like "Sorceror Hunters" as well as the "Slayers" movies. Its fantasy, its crude humor, and at least it has a good plot to go along with it. Also, "Ah, My Goddess!" is definitely a series worth a view or two. Now for the ani-gay, I have been searching a lot for these types and the only ones that I can recommend aren't so much in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I'm not sure why, but anywho my picks for the gay stuff would be "Junjou Romantica" and a new show called "Antique Bakery." Two shows with good writing and a couple laughs to help brighten your day a little more.
Ok, well I'm done babbling for now. Can't wait until the next episode!
P.S. The last two shows I mentioned aren't exactly available on DVD at the moment, at least not Junjou on Netflix. And Antique is currently airing so you can catch episodes on youtube or crunchyroll.com...
Yay - anigay!

No, that's not a reference to the Fresh Prince song.
Hey, Chuckles. I'm a huge Freddy fan myself. Last year I made Marc watch them all in a row, including New Nightmare and Freddy Vs. Jason.
Here's a relevant post I wrote up in February: Freddy's New Nightmare Is Michael Bay
Sigh. But I'll still watch it no matter what.
BTW, I love your icon. :D

Serial Killer's
True Blood is so far my favorite new show. Got to watch both episodes back to back and it was extremely well done.
Asylum... was beyond horrible - thankfully I didn't pay to see it.
As for DEXTER - one of the best acted shows ever. If you ever get a mate for Kodus .... his name should be Dexter.
Would like to see a list of hottest Immortals. (includes vamps, demons, immortals)
My top 3 would be Adrian Paul from Highlander
the late Mark Frankel from The Kindred
and Kevin Smith (Ares) from Hercules
Hottest Immortals
Hey, JC. We have a couple similar lists in the wings for future episodes (well, not hottest, but best), so thanks for the suggestion and additions!
Maybe "hottest" is better than "best". At least sometimes...
We don't talk about True Blood in the next vlog (ep 35), but we'll pick it up again in episode 36 (with True Blood episode 3!). In the meantime, I'm sure you've seen Brian's awesome Blood Works vlog.

Death Note
I watched the subbed version first via online fan subs, so maybe I'm biased for the original language and voice actors. I have to say that L and Light just sound so much better in the original Japanese, at least to me. Especially Light's evil laugh, it's so much better in the original language.
Also, check out the live action Death Note movies. I like them.
oh yeah!
Nightmare on Elm Street remake
The Nightmare on Elm Street remake is directed by Samuel Bayer (director of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video), written by the team of Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer, and follows in the Platinum Dunes tradition of bringing back beloved horror icons and….doing something with them. Thus far, Platinum Dunes has had a bumpy track record with bringing these characters back. Their Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was okay, until the end when Jessica fucking Biel bests Leatherface. Still, if the trailer is accurate, and the Nightmare on Elm Street remake is as good as it looks, it might be worth a cash advance to see it.
