Another three bite the dust: "Eli", "Daisies" and "Money" get the axe from ABC

Bad news for three shows from gay creators: ABC has passed on ordering additional episodes past the original 13 for Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and Dirty Sexy Money.

The ratings for all three sophomore dramas had been flagging seriously since their return in September, so this isn't too big of a surprise, but it's a bummer and a half to see the shows reach the end of their lines. Greg Berlanti's Dirty Sexy Money introduced a groundbreaking character in Carmelita, a transgender woman played by a transgender actress, Candis Cayne, who was actually treated as a human being and not as a punchline.

Stone brought gay pop star George Michael back to American televisions, and Daisies had a planned gay character before the strike pretty much nixed the development of the latter half of the first season. The only upside to this news is that this might mean that Bryan Fuller will return to pull the bloody body of Heroes out of the wreckage of Season 3 and breathe life back into it, as he has hinted he might.

Eonline has some exclusive quotes from Fuller and Kristin Chenoweth about Daisies' cancellation.

So which of the shows (if any) will you miss most? Let us know in our poll after the break!

Pushing Daisies

One of those hidden gems that I will always cherish having the privalege to watch. Sometimes the out of the ordinary doesn't catch on and although quality doesn't make it through the Darwin nature of the business.

Incredibly disappointed

Sigh.... I'm incredibly disappointed about both Daisies and Stone. Sheesh, there are so very few decent scripted shows on network television in the first place, and then to just throw away some really excellent programmes? To be replaced with what---more reality crap, most likely?

Particularly disappointing is the news that Daisies ends with a cliffhanger. I really did want a decent resolution for the show. One of Fuller's previous shows, the (fantastic) Wonderfalls, only lasted 13 episodes, but it did have a complete story arc and a really satisfying final episode. And now we don't even get that for Daisies...

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

Eli Stone so under-rated

I loved Eli Stone from the get go. Both Jonny Lee Miller and Victor Garber have been outstanding imo, with great support from Loretta Devine, Tom Amandes, James Saito and Katey Sagal. I was looking forward to the big Supreme Court showdown.

Watched some Pushing Daisies last season but never did get into it much. As an aside, I think Heroes has been great this season and doesn't need any rescuing, though Bryan Fuller's input would still be welcome.

Not Eli Stone!

I loved it so much from the start too! I was so disappointed to see it getting a shorter season because of the strike, but now it was getting much more interesting  and it's getting canceled? that's really bad news....who takes these bad decisions, it's like with another brian fuller show, wonderfalls, an incredibly under rated show with great casting that got the axe because some idiot thought it shouldn't continue.... i'm so pissed off :(

That is rubbish!

I swear i am livid right now!! Pushing Daisies is AMAZING!! and me, terry and our housemate watch it every week! I can't believe it's been canceled!! :( and octobercountry is right, it will probably be some reality tv garbage that will take it's place!! GRRR!!! Is there any way to save dasies? I will become a one man letter writing daisies saving homo if needs be!!
(i am ofcourse only his cross because I absolutely adore Kristin Chenoweth and think that she's amazing) But seriously it does feel that TV is slowly getting rid of any show/character/storyline that doesn't fit into the "norm"and the way things are heading pretty soon we will onl be watching Big Brother and about 100 other reality tv shows!!

Wow...

I can't believe ABC just cancelled three of its best shows!!  They must have known that ratings would be down after a 9-month span of no new episodes due to the strike and hardly any promotions for their return in the fall.  ABC should have given them a little more time or at least a chance to tie up loose ends.  Now, we'll probably have three cliff-hangers to watch when the series finales air, if they even air at all.  I loved all three, and Lee, Jonny and Seth will be missed!!

Oh, crap!

I was about to write all sorts of praise to Eli Stone in a newspaper article, and now it's offed. That is so screwed.

I miss Eli Stone already

as the winning cast and combination of light-hearted comedy and topical subject matters made me smile. This show should be a hit as it's not serialized and its content had such potential appeal to all demographics.

I've been following the show's ratings closely since it premiered and I am at a loss as to why it did not do better in the ratings as it had two great lead ins, last season with Grey's Anatomy and this season with the ubber successful Dancing with the Stars. While I don't watch the latter, the show appeals to all viewers, especially older viewers who I think would appreciate a non-violent show.

Unfortunately, the numbers spoke for themselves as it was not just that the Eli was bleeding the vast majority of its Dancing viewers (almost 20 million for Dancing less than 7 for Eli), but it was tanking across every single demographic group. I don't get it as I find the show to be charming and likable. I can see Daisies being cancelled as a show like that could be deemed a niche show that could kick butt if it aired on HBO, but Eli? There is no hope for broadcast TV as barely anything that I like lasts and when I see what others are watching, it sends me straight to basic and premium cable.

I do think that ABC made a mistake airing Eli at 10:00 as I see it as a possible family show airing at 8:00. Would it have made a difference? Maybe not, but this is the one show that I will miss as it was earnest with a little pepper. If it can't succeed on broadcast TV, that sucks.

I never watched Dirty Sexy Money, but can't believe that the beyond lousy Private Practice will now get the plum spot after Grey's Anatomy as the only survivor of ABC's Wednesday night massacre.

ABC is in a rough spot as CBS has the market on annoying crime procedurals that, along with Idol and Dancing, are the only broadcast shows that the public seems to be responding to these days. If it were not for Sunday, Grey's Anatomy, and Betty holding on for dear life, ABC would be up a creek. So now ABC will bring in perpetual bench warmer Jim Belushi, which may have become the new Mr. Belvedere: a show that no one I know watches yet survives year after year until you realize that it's approaching the 10-year mark. But Eli? I can't blame ABC on this one as America got it wrong.

A Little Light Just Died in Me... A Bit Too Dramatic? Sorry.

Bah humbug! Pushing Daisies was one of the best shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The characterization was strong; the cinematography was stunning, and the overall tone of the show was altogether upbeat and positive despite having strong themes of murder and necromancy. I've loved it ever since Kirsten Chenoweth burst into song in the first episode.

This is a tragedy.

Mixed Feelings

Almost every forum I visit is discussing Pushing Daisies.  I should make a macro...

I love PD, I'm sad it's ending, but I'd rather it die young than stick around past it's sell-by date.  Quirky shows age quickly, see: Twin Peaks, Northern Exposure.

I am genuinely sorry for the people who enjoyed it, but I Won't be shedding a tear for Eli Stone.  In the pilot, they spread those oft-repeated (and repeatedly disproved) lies about a link between vaccines and autism, feeding into the anti-vaccine paranoia that has led to this year's measles outbreak, and weakening the herd immunity that keeps even more serious diseases at bay in the public.

We talk about responsibile programming all the time here, and Eli Stone went out of its way to spread misinformation that could put children's lives at risk.  Frankly, I was so disgusted I thought about dropping Berlanti's other work, until I calmed down and decided to target the work rather than the person.

I agree with you on the

I agree with you on the fact that Pushing Daisies needs to stop before it gets bad or boring or... I don't have the right word but you get what I mean. But I'm still mad because apparently they won't even give it a proper ending, I think it's so stupid because that show is all about the endings,  they always find something surprising to give us and we're suppose to forget about the show after a regular episode ? I'm really not gonna like that !

No, No, No! Not Pushing Daisies!

That show never fails to make me feel cheerful.  So many things to love about that show, such as Kristin Chenoweth and Ellen Greene doing a cover of "Birdhouse In Your Soul."

I wonder if we'll even get to see the episode in which Wilson Cruz makes a guest appearance.

Future Pushing Daisies episodes

My understanding is that ABC is still committed to airing the remaining episodes, although there may be a timeslot shift.  It sounds like they were really behind the show, it was just way too expensive for the ratings and demographics it was bringing in.

I'm sure we'll see a DVD of all the episodes even if ABC changes their minds.

Oh bugger

I've been a bit bummed out about ABC not renewing Pushing Daisies (sent them comments on their site about it too) - it's been the only show that I've consistently looked forward to watching every week since it came back and it will definitely leave a void once it's gone.  The show was really doomed with the writer's strike and then with ABC not airing it for two weeks following the election and those stupid CMA awards...

Finishing the storylines via comic books is a nice consolation, but will hardly compare to the experience of watching the episodes.
