Battle of the Network Gays for May 22
Every Friday we pick the gays in television who have had the best week and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week and enjoy their own fancy button over on the left. We'll announce the winner on Monday (Tuesday, in this case), and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following Friday to try to steal his title. Last week you voted As the World Turns' Alpha Gay Barista Noah Mayer into the throne, but this week he forfeited his crown by failing to show up for his kingly duties (I hope he's finally getting around to restocking the biscotti station!). So instead we have four new gays scrambling for that pretty headgear! Check them out, and vote for your favorite! This week's contenders:
Vote for your favorite by 8 AM EDT on Tuesday, May 26 (Monday's a holiday over here). And be sure to check back next week to see which gay our readers have carried to glory! Submitted by on Fri, 2009-05-22 14:21. |

Gay of the week
Actually, I think Kurt may
...
Adam Lambert is having the gayest week ever!
Possibly...
Having earthshaking, hogwhimperingly, bobobo-chimp-sweating, volcanic, unapologetic, irrestistible sex with another man might have been a teensy-weensy bit more gay. As he didn't do that with any member of Kiss, Queen, their road crews, managers or agents, I think we can safely assume that what he was doing on stage is called performing songs. Not being especially gay.
I like the guy and think he has great talent, but let's not go overboard here.
Adam doesn't deserve to be
Adam doesn't deserve to be crowned gay of the week one more time.. He is an idiot who won't even come out.. Now the fangirls are starting to speculate that he might be bi, oh god.. This makes me glad Kris won.
"It's not dangling over my head. [Laughing] It may be dangling over yours, but it's not over mine. Yeah, I think speculation keeps things really interesting."
"Like I said, I think speculation keeps things very, very interesting."
Whatever, I'm done with the guy!
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
You don't have to come OUT
But he WASN'T out!
But he WASN'T OUT! Cause if he WAS out then people wouldn't speculate now, would they?
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
That's ridiculous
If he'd come out in that interview, the headlines of the day would be his come out and not Kris victory. Kris is his friend and that'd be very unfair to him.
Maybe i'm a weird person, but i usually don't do what people expect if they pressure me to do it, and if i was in his situation, i will come out when i feel like, not when i journalist want it.
I really like when celebrities come out, but i don't think it's fair pressure them to do it. He is just out of the show, let him enjoy the moment. He has a lot of time to come out (but better not wait too much because then maybe nobody cares, hello Clay Aiken)
I guess it depends on what
I just love when people say
I just love when people say Adam is an idiot for not coming out.
1) If Adam "comes out", the headline will be: "Adam is Gay" or "Adam comes out" or "Adam: "I'm Gay". It wouldn't be: "Kris Allen: The New American Idol". And Ellen DeGeneres and other talk show hosts would probably scramble to get an interview with Adam. Not Kris, who right now should be in the limelight deservingly. Not Adam. Kris and Adam are obviously great friends and knowing as much about Adam so far from the competition and interviews, Adam is not Danny Gokey with his "me, me, me, me, ME" attitude. Adam and Kris are both very "we, we, we" or "us, us, us", never "me, me, me, me, ME". If he "comes out", I think everyone would say he's a selfish arsehole for stealing Kris' limelight. Yeah... I pity Adam, that guy can't win either way.
2) It's so obvious he's gay. Even my parents know he's gay. He never says he's gay but it's obvious he doesn't need to. It's like asking: "Are you tall?" when it's very obvious he's tall. Does he need to say out "I'm gay, gay, gay, gay, GAYYYY" for people to "believe" he's gay? Both him and Kris have pretty much answered questions on his sexuality without going - Adam: "I'm gay." or Kris: "He's gay."
3) One of Adam's fans said this and I agree wholeheartedly. Adam just wants to be a great artiste. Adam wants people to like him for being a great artiste. He doesn't need to be a great GAY artiste. Just a great artiste. Period. It's the same as Kris wanting to be a great artiste. Not a great STRAIGHT artiste. Just a great artiste. Period.
4) Adam never denies he's gay. He just said cyptically that he knows who he is and he's being who he is. Any other tween/teen fangirls who think that by him saying so, that he's straight are just delusional. If he's bi, what's wrong with being bi? But so far, the only "girlfriend" I know he had was his prom date in high school who turned out to be his best friend. Now, boyfriends on the other hand... hmm... there was Brad (aka Cheeks) and now there's a certain Drake in the picture. Hmm...
I love the whole fascination of "Adam should come out now". Really? Maybe Kris should come out too. As a straight guy.
Yeah, but like I said..
Yeah, but like I said.. He's not officially out before he says he's gay. I believe he is gay, I think it's obvious. It's just very annoying he won't come out and say it. I was almost attacked on Twitter by a fangirl, "Adam is NOT gay!".. He's not officially out when they can claim he's straight. I just want those idiots to STFU, and only way of doing that is for Adam to come out.. They are so deluded that no matter how much evidence you have saying he's gay they just say he's straight. You can't talk reason with them, it's impossible.
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
If I were Adam...
I've been here a while but haven't felt strongly enough to actually comment. I'm more of a lurker. But I had a few thoughts I wanted to share.
Adam lives his life the way he wants to and the way that I hope all men/women can in the future. He doesn't owe anyone anything. He hasn't denied anything. He is who he is and he doesn't feel the need to explain himself to people especially when people don't have the courage to ask him a direct question. Which no one has bothered to do yet. And when they do, I hope he throws the question back at them and asks them what they think.
I like to think that my children are going to grow up in a word where there are no people magazine covers because we don't need them. I think Adam is the start of that and just like Lindsay Lohan, I hope more and more people do the same.
I've watched tons of people from tweens to 70 year olds on message boards, in forums, on YouTube and in comments on articles defend Adam's rights and tell people that it is a singing contest, not a sexuality contest. I've watched more and more people understanding that it's not Adam is gay but that Adam is a singer and oh by the way he is gay. Almost like an afterthought, kind of like being straight is, an afterthought. Isn't that the way it should be? I am this person, but these are some interesting things about me. These people then talk about Adam outside of the Internet and tell their hairdresses, their neighbors, their friends, their coworkers what they've learned and little, by little more and more people understand that everyone is equal even while we are different.
Adam has already changed the thinking of more people than we will ever know just by being who he is and you want him to announce to the world he is gay for what reason? Because some tweens still fantasize about him? Even if he announces he's gay, the tweens will still fantasize and that's okay, because that's what tweens do. Hell, I wish I fantasized a little more than I do. I kind of miss those days.
I think Adam will be able to do more by never being asked or answering that question just by holding his boyfriend's hand as they leave a restaurant or giving him a kiss as they get in the car. How can being who you are and not feeling like you have to come out of a closet you've never been in not be a good thing for America's children to see? How can living your life as a Gay Man as if you have every right to do so without announcing it on a magazine cover not be a good thing for our young people to see? Seeing a celebrity out and about living his life without embarrassment or explanation and like he has every right to do so. That is the kind of role models I want my children to see.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts on what I wish for the future, but since I also wanted my children to grow up in a world where the most talented man could win a singing contest, I don't expect this will work out the way it should either.
Agreed
Breaking News: Adam "comes out" on his myspace page
For those of you who don't accept that Adam is already out, American Idol has just restored his pre-Idol myspace. Take a gander at the comments section:
His official website links to this completely hillarious, over the top page. There is hardly a comments page that doesn't make reference to his boyfriend or to gay sex (I actually steered clear of the more graphic stuff - the fangirls are having a field day). How the hell can anyone say he isn't out? Really, people. This is idiotic.
Well..
Well.. I think that really says it all. But I think it's obvious he's gay. Even though he's out in his private life and probably has for many years, he's STILL not out in the public eye, and he won't be until newspapers etc CAN call him gay. He made the news here in Norway today, and they made a referance to the kissing pics and that he "might" be gay, because, guess what.. He hasn't actually stated that he is gay! I know it's weird, cause he isn't closeted at all, but he isn't COMPLETELY out either.
I do actually think it's a smart career move though. He has lots of fanatic tweens as fans, and by saying he wants to "keep things interesting", he's actually protecting his career. Think of all the fangirls who will get their hearts broken and refuse to buy his album if he ever publically comes out.. I still wish he would just say it, but oh well..
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Give us a little more credit than that.
Give me a break. I understand that fangirls aren't usually the sharpest tools in the drawer, but please give us a little more credit than that. Surveying various forums and communities around the web, I'd say a good 95%+ of his fangirls (the ones who are going to actually buy the CDs) know Adam's gay and either love it or don't care either way. And the rest are sure to be bombarded with "He's gay" comments if they dare think otherwise. The tweenie power voters that make up the most influential voting block on AI aren't going to remember either Kris nor Adam come next season, and I doubt they're going to buy CDs so I hardly see why it matters either way.
And if Jake Gyllenhaal being straight isn't going to stop gay men from fantasizing about him, I hardly see why Adam being gay is going to stop straight women (and if I dare, lesbian women as well) from thinking about him that way.
On Larry King last night
Frank Rich writes about Adam today in the NYT
in relation to Obama and gay marriage
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/opinion/24rich.html
Very telling in terms of "Mainstream" journalistic practice. Even Frank Rich can't say the words!
Even some of the press realizes there is no question to be asked
The Washington Post:
One hundred million votes were cast in last week's Idol finale, and though it's premature to interpret Lambert's loss as a referendum on tolerance, his flamboyant persona marked a striking departure from the heterosexual bluffing of 2003 Idol contestant Clay Aiken. While it took Aiken years to come out (he did so last September), Lambert never felt the need to pander to conservative audiences. Although he never came right out and said "I'm gay," his response to photos of him in drag and kissing other men -- "I have nothing to hide, I am who I am" -- was clear enough, and more eloquent by far.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/22/AR2009052202027.htmlthose Out staffers...
I actually thought the same thing reading the article the first time through, and it's actually quite a refreshing read for that reason.
However, I do have to point out that it's written by an Out magazine staffer, and they don't bat an eyelash when it comes to writing about Anderson Cooper and the glass closet, so I hardly see why they'd treat Adam differently.
On the other hand, he never said Adam was gay either. He points out that Adam is not "unequivocally straight" but just is who he is, and states the facts. It's actually incredibly subtle and intelligent writing, in fact, so I can see why it's hard for the rest of the media to produce this same kind of discussion without actually crossing line. ...especially considering how stupid most of the questions reporters ask him are, and the fact that those questions probably reflect the actual reporter (and his/her writing).
