The big gay "Brothers & Sisters" season finale: Video clips

In case you've had your head inside a watermelon for the last several weeks and haven't heard it mentioned on everything from network promos to cable guides to this site, last night marked a gigantic moment in terms of gay visibility on television: Brothers & Sisters' Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) married his boyfriend Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) in the big season finale. This marks several firsts (first gay wedding season finale, first gay central character to have gotten hitched on primetime, first out gay man playing out gay man in a series regular role on network primetime), but more than anything, it was just damned good. I'm not a fan of the show myself, but this was perfection.

In case you missed things, we've posted clips of the most important moments after the jump. And also be sure to check out our vow-by-vow recap of the episode over on the main page, as well as our article on gay weddings in movies and TV. Grab some rice, have your tissues handy, and enjoy!

Kevin walks in on a family discussion of sibling-not-sibling Rebecca, and of course thinks they're talking about him, leading him to make a rather unceremonious announcement about his wedding to Scotty.

Kevin tells Scotty about what's going on with the Walker clan.

All the business about Rebecca makes Kevin remember an uncomfortable moment with his father, which leads him to attempt a reunion with Scotty's parents. I particularly like Justin's use of the word "mantrimony".

Kevin makes an ill-fated attempt to change Scotty's folks' minds about the wedding, but his father does sneak Kevin a present for his son. It might look like the puzzlebox from Hellraiser, but don't worry - it's cufflinks, not Pinhead.

Finally the big moment comes, and despite a bit of improbably cutesiness about the rings, it's awesome. Although the look on Saul's face is heartbreaking, isn't it?

And finally, Scotty carries Kevin over the threshold. But this being a Walker wedding, family intervenes before too long, and Scotty's mention of his parents sends Kevin back into flashback-land. It was fun while is lasted, right?

If you want to watch the whole episode, head on over to ABC's website and check it out.

Scotty's parents

Was it just me or were Scotty's parents WAY to young? They seemed in their mid-forties and Scotty has to be in his late twenties at least right?

Re: Scotty's Parents

Luke MacFarlane was born in 1980; Michael O'Keefe was 25 in 1980 and Jayne Brook was 20 in 1980, so it's conceivable that they could be Scotty's parents.

My thoughts on the wedding

Although they didn't spend any time talking about why they didn't want a big splashy wedding, I got the impression that because it wasn't a real marriage wedding but only a committment wedding, they didn't want it to be a fake straight wedding, the kind only gays can have in California. I think if they could have been actually married, like in Canada, they would have done it in a more traditional and big way.

The one or two things that bugged me were why wouldn't they have thought of rings? I mean, most guys I know wear rings as jewelry regardless of whether they are married or not. And, if Kitty had put more that 2 seconds thought into what she was going to say, why wouldn't she have figured out what she was going to call them as a married couple? That awkward moment at the end was dumb. It seemed a contrived way to say "oh, we don't have a term for husband and husband".

But all in all, I liked the episode, I was really glad they didn't do a "stag" for Kevin with all the tired cliches of how to make a gay stag like a straight one. I think Scotty's dad will be around next season, he seemed regretful that he couldn't go to the wedding. The mom seemed quite the b**ch, and must have been the deeper reason that his dad wasn't going to come around.

Lastly, Saul broke my heart. I hope they give him a tiny bit of "old man" happiness in the next season. The look on his face as he watched Kevin and Scotty put the rings on and kiss, his face full of happiness for them, deep sadness and regret for himself, was spot on. A great actor.

Janet, I agree with you on the rings! Bit strange that they didn't think of them themselves? Also, I didn't get the whole thing. So Scotty puts on Kevin's finger Tommy's ring and Kevin puts on Scotty's finger, Robert's ring? But we don't see how Robert gives his ring to Kevin, do we?

Janet, I also agree with you on Scotty's dad! It would be nice to see him around in the next season.

Same also for Saul. It was nice how they put him 'between' Kevin and Scotty. I couldn't agree more with you about Ron Rifkin! Awesome! That scene was heartbreaking. I also hope, we'll see more of him and happier in the coming season.

Too bad :o) Friday is Lesbian night in the gay-bar Justin researched! I would have loved to see Kevin and his brothers in a gay bar!

Um, hello, how many weddings have you been to where the bride cooked the wedding feast herself? (people from Alabama need not answer)

Isn't that the functional equivalent of a groom giving a bride a vacuum cleaner for a wedding present? "Here you go honey, now you won't have to complain about my toenail clippings on the bedroom carpet!"

I was waiting for confirmation that the wedding cake came from Costco, because I somehow doubt that Scotty managed to bake on on top of preparing appetizers and entree's for twenty or so guests.

So the rings getting forgotten comes as no surprise. They were taking this whole "wedding" thing less seriously than Nora took dinner for Mumbles and her kids.

Let's recap here:

1) "Wedding" scheduled like three days in advance and "nothing fancy please": check

2) Guests: immediate family, a handful of lawyers, several rent boys and one Republican U.S. senator who voted for a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage: check

3) One failed bachelor party for Kevin. Gods know what Scotty did (bake cake presumably): check

4) One wedding feast, prepared by Groom #2 (aka "The Bride" or "Cinderella"): check

5) Two suits, looking like they'd just come off the clearance rack at the Burlington Coat Factory. Unflattering colors for either Groom's complexion: check

6) Flower arrangements, provided by Mother with pruning sheers and a fortuitously large and well-landscaped backyard: check

7) Wedding venue: Mother's TV room. Springtime California climate apparently being disagreeable to using the yard. That or Nora was embarrassed at how badly she had to butcher her landscaping to provide flowers for the ceremony: check

8) Homophobic new in-laws boycotting wedding in protest of son's homosexuality: check

9) Officiator, a former conservative political pundit who has expressed opposition to same-sex marriage (but supports "civil unions") and is married to/works for Republican U.S. senator who voted for Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage (see item #2): check

10) Two rings. Ooops, no, wait a second. Two borrowed rings. One borrowed from die hard Republican brother, the other borrowed from Republican U.S. senator who voted for Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage (see items #2 & #9): check

and of course....

11) One honeymoon. Or not. Maybe they both had to work the next day? And Kevin had a not really urgent revelation that just had to be made on his wedding night even if it meant leaving Groom #2 (aka "Back on the Market") to masturbate to an old Jeff Stryker video he found squirrelled in the chair cushions behind the Liza Minelli pillow: check

As you can see, I'm having a slightly hard time taking this "wedding" too seriously.

12. One ultra-snarky checklist from a slightly cynical AE member - A BIG PRICELESS - check!  This is great stuff, Psioncyx!

If only you had mentioned the lack of vows, this would be very close to my entire bitch list.

We do see it

Actually, we do.  Robert offers his ring to Kevin before Tommy does the same to Scotty.

Thank you Joey! I've only watched the clips on AE so far. That's why that bit of information was missing. Makes more sense now.

Interesting though that Kevin and Scotty are given rings by two other guys. Tommy he's so sweet I understand he'd do this for his brother (I mean, the guy's kid is maybe Kevin's kid, right - they have completely dropped the sperm-donor story - but that's good I say), but the Senator... Still. Interesting.

Rushed

The whole episode felt rushed ... blame the writers' strike.

I think we'll see Scotty's parents again, at least Michael O'Keefe, somewhat of a "name" to be cast just for one episode.
