Blog rater: "Gay" will get you NC-17

Here's a whopper: a friend of the site tipped us off to a "blog ratings" tool that allows you to "rate" your (or others') "blog, profile, or website" using the MPAA ratings system (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17) as a structure (but apparently not as a model for ratings criteria).

The fun part is that if you use the word "gay" on your site, you get slapped with the NC-17. As an example, here's what this very page earned from the rating tool:

See that? "Gay", "gays", and "queer" earned us an NC-17. Nothing dirty, mind you -- just commonly-used terms regarding our sexuality.

Curious about this, I checked out a few other sites, and found some interesting results...

Hollywoodtuna, which consists entirely of women in underwear and discussion of their various assets, got this rating:

Huh. So "ass" and "sexy" get you a PG, while "gay" gets you an NC-17. But wait -- what about "boobs", "pissing", "cleavage", "sexiest", "damn", "topless", "nipple", "marijuana", "drug", and "breasts" -- all featured in plain text on the main page? They apparently don't rate as offensive or sensitive terms. But good thing they didn't say "gay"!

Here's the rating result for Playboy's blog, which rates just an R for "torture", "sex", and "dick":

And probably my favorite, GirlsGoneWild, which -- since it's all images -- rates a toddler-friendly G. You know, it's one thing to have a stupid "tool" that doesn't work. But it's another thing to insult entire populations of people with your backward moral ideas. The tool was created by a dating site, which oddly apparently allows men to search for men as potential dates. Hey -- they'll be happy to take your money to set you up with nonexistent love objects, but don't expect to be treated like a human being. Hey -- would "asshole" tip us into an X?
