Blood Work "True Blood" video blog Ep. 3: A vampire in Brooklyn

We're back with another installment of Blood Work, our weekly vlog discussing the increasingly batcrap crazy, gay-inclusive vampire show, True Blood.

For this week's episode I got serious in my journalistic efforts and headed to a vampire bar to get a real live (or undead, at least) vampire to co-host.

Will I make it through the episode without losing my neck? And what in heaven's name is going on in the wacky world of Bon Temps?! Click on through the jump to find out!

This week's episode may have converted me...

John Dahl directing, Lafayette giving an Emmy worthy turn in gold pants, vampire party house, Sookie's friend toning it down a little, hot guy working short shorts. Just bring Linda Fiorentino, work on Anna Paquin's accent, and we may have a show that has room to grow.

I was ready to give up after two shows, but my disdain for watching awards shows allowed me to catch the third episode sooner than I ordinarily wood.

Ha! There aren't enough chain-link fences in Bon Temps to accommodate this crew ... they'd give her a run for her money!

Glad you're getting into the show. And not just because it's the juiciest genre universe going on television and is gay-inclusive and all that, but because I think it's legitimately insane entertainment that deserves some support.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for the next True Blood

Think of the scene in The Last Seduction in which Linda Fiorentino's character out mans the Peter Berg character when she calls him on his last ditch attempt to bed her. Classic balls to the wall writing/acting. I am seeing season 2 possibilities in which a horny vampire looks sedate next to the mind-games that a little ole human train-wreck like Linda could bring to the table. Just placing Mr Ed. on the table.

But seriously, I like your framing TB as "legitimately insane entertainment" as if it's able to deliver even on that premise, it will not only be better than 99% of what is out there, but even more importantly it will be good period and remind thinking folks that the golden age of TV is not something that passed them by as I've been arguing that we've been in said era for a long time. Not need to look back.

What I enjoyed most about episode 3 was that it expanded the original universe and, unlike Twin Peaks or other "quirky" (I hate that word) shows, it is not framing itself around a singular mystery or a hard to sustain narrative, but kind of letting its hair down as it exposes itself to us. I hope to see much more uncomfortable dialogue, raw sexuality (except for Sookie touching herself) and actors taking pleasure in the characters that they are playing. More vampires!!!! Much less of Ball's metaphors and vampire killings blamed on Sookie's horny brother, which should be easy to do, especially because I hear that Ball has assembled a great group of writers who are taking over starting with the upcoming episode. I hope John Dahl and protegees direct upcoming episodes as if this show continues to show what I saw in episode 3, I may be able to overlook Anna Paquin if they keep feeding me moody vampires and cool cliffhangers.

With the networks still trying to appeal as broad a group as possible, the creative maturing of HBO, now Showtime, and niche base cable successes at FX and now even boring old AMC, there is almost a wealth of riches on a year-round basis so it is important to find what you like. I am only starting to forgive Fox for cancelling Profit like 100 years ago as it would be the perfect companion show for Dexter :-)

a new mystery

Who is the "she" that the vampire's referred to as being over Eric's head?  I cannot wait to figure out Sam's deal, too (his barking in his sleep is so adorable).

It's not Peroxide

My guess it's not the blonde on the tv trying to bring vampires in to the mainstream. In stead it'll be an unexpected twist. That said: what's with the dog. It appears to be a vampire that can change shape? Or is it sookie's grandfather looking after her? I'm loving this show because every episode thrills you and still makes you want to experience it more and more....like good sex.

Full disclosure: I might just be in the need of aforementioned good sex.

Vampire heirarchy

At this point in the Sookie Stackhouse series of books, Bill has no office. Eric is the Sheriff of Shreveport and North Louisiana. He answers to the Queen of New Orleans, who is the "she" mentioned by the renegade vampires. The Queen doesn't appear in the books until about the 6th or 7th one.

By the way, we're gonna kill off people

I always seem to forget that there is a murder mystery going on.  Maybe as the bodies pile up, i will remember.  It seems all the bodies are those that have been found are fang-ers.  Maybe Sam is killing them.

Sam did call the dog "brother".

Tera can come crash at my house any time!

Although, I thought Bill admitted to killing the "rednecks".

Sorry, but I think Joey shouldn't quit his day job....

Jason etc.

Jason's a really watch-able guy and not just for the obvious. Pretending to be a vampire is foreplay for him? It's what he said to Dawn. Actually, it seemed to be way more than foreplay. It was the main event. And his describing himself as a buffet laid out for a vamp. Uh oh. Then in the midst of the action his unconcious pops out and sneakily projects the bald vampire's face onto the lady beneath. The final nail in the coffin, so to speak, was his reaction to his late-night TV viewing. Reminded me of those folks who holler that everytime they turn on the set gay is being shoved down their throats. So poor Jason. I think he's fairly gagging for it but internalized vamp-phobia much? I'm hoping the boy breaks on through because Jason the fuck bunny as a vamp would be . . . something I'd very much want to see.

I don't know where Allen Ball is going with all the metaphors - too murky for me yet -but blonde breather? Not PC but that was funny.

Did anyone else notice that all the upholstery in the nest was covered in plastic? It's all in the details.

Remenber , this is based on

Remenber , this is based on a complete series of books and it has a very rich plot with lots of development and twists on which to draw. I'm really tempted to just get the 1st  book and figure  all the bits  out. But,as much as it hurts to wait , I'll just let it all play out. On the fansites ( and there are a number of them both for the series and for the books) when someone posts about the HBO series and gives away any forward details , they give a shout out to SPOILER ALLERT-we should do the same here as noted in an earlier post who gave details of books 6-7. In this weeks episode the major character of Eric appears -enjoy
