Boston Legal gets a little gay (again)

*-*-SPOILERS-*-*

We came across word that David E. Kelly's award-winning lawyer dramedy Boston Legal will feature a gay storyline in episode four of this season. In the ep a military general friend of Denny Crane (William Shatner) comes out of the closet and of course is not welcomed by his superiors with a ticker-tape parade, leading him to come for legal counsel in the face of being discharged. Denny is apparently troubled by his old friend's admission and turns to his colleagues for advice.

Boston Legal had a similar "gay ep" last season, in which recurring character Judge Clark Brown (Henry Gibson) came out of the closet while suing an ex-gay group for not being able to "cure" him of his sexuality. The episode handled the topic quite well, and we can only hope that this similarly headline-friendly plot will be handled with the same sensitivity.

Gibson appears as Judge Brown in this episode as well, so hopefully he'll have some interaction with the military client. But the real good news is that Denny's gay friend is played by Sam McMurray, one of my favorite "Hey, it's that guy!" actors (my favorite McMurray appearance was in the underappreciated L.A. Story).

Boston Legal airs Tuesdays on ABC.

Is Boston Legal Gay friendly?

Franky, I was very turned off and stopped watching Boston Legal last season due to a very unpleasant charater who appeared to be very a stereotypical gay man.  His name was Lincoln Meyer. Many may protest that he was not gay but for me he was over the top and very much of a turn off.  The writers made him appear as a weak, unattractive and deranged gay man or sissy.

I can not express how important it is for the artistic forces in Hollywood to stop showing Gays and Lesbians as unattractive or problematic stereotypes who are often flawed and freaky.

This is 2007 and it is still everywhere. ABC's Brothers and Sisters is one of the few exceptions. Today's movies are just as bad. Almost every "Teen Comedy"  released this year has anti gay jokes....  Here's hoping that things change. SOON.

Sam McMurray on the Tracy Ullman Show

Sam McMurray was one of my favorites on Tracy Ullman's show in the early '90s; he and Dan Castelleneta (the Simpsons) played the gay fathers of Francesca, the precocious teen (played by Ullman).

Still so much homophobia on tv

A gay guest star character for just one episode is not enough.
People working on tv shows are still scared shitless of the gay thing. I see only bad gay jokes and even worse gay characters.
The only good show with great gay characters and gay stories is Torchwood, but of course it's not an American show.

This season has been great with 6 more new shows in the can

David E. Kelley's team has ben working overtime to incorporate today's headlines into the show and in my opinion has had a stellar season. 2 out of its first 8 shows have handled topics of relevance to this site, including the one mentioned above as well as the one in which Denny Crane was "Larry Craiged." It was done with its usual irreverence and did not beat you over the head too hard nor pandered to the audience.

As much as I enjoy this show, which is ignored by critics who seem to miss that David E. Kelley does not run ALL of its shows into the ground, it could use a gay male character in the cast to add to its still fertile ground.

While the show already has one of the most fascinating and intimate relationships between men on TV, neither lead character is gay so I do think that it's more than overdue that the show get a gay associate. This would be quite easy to do as the show rotates characters in and out as no other series on TV

Given Kelley's ability to crank out scripts, the show will have 14 shows in the can, so even in a worst case scenario, we can at least look forward to 6 more this year. I for one can't wait as Denny Crane and Allan Shore could be my favorite male couple on TV. They even smelled each other before the new year.

I love David E. Kelley.

His shows have always been gay inclusive and a test of sexual identity From Amanad Donoho on LA LAW to Clarence asa  heterosexual transvestite on BOSTON LEGAL.  He is a true genius in a world that rewards mediocrity and disdains everything else.
