"Brothers & Sisters": New Kevin & Scotty commitment ceremony pics!
ABC just released pics of Kevin and Scotty's wedding on the upcoming Very Special Episode of Brothers & Sisters, and we've got 'em for ya. Last time we reported on the upcoming gay wedding finale, Luke MacFarlane hadn't come forward yet to publicly announce that he is a gay-type person. Now it's all the more wonderful to see these pics ... oh damn, we always cry at weddings! Where's the open bar...
Here's ABC's description of the episode:
"Prior Commitments" - Kevin and Scotty make a commitment to be life partners, Saul finally deals with his identity in a public way, and the family discovers that William (guest starring Tom Skerritt) kept yet another painful secret from his family, on the season finale of "Brothers & Sisters," Tons more pics after the jump! Woot!! I love weddings (in this case, a civil union/commitment ceremony)! And thank you Michael and Brian for posting these up! :)
Luke MacFarlane and Matthew Rhys look very handsome in their suits. :)

Maintainer of Luke MacFarlane OnlineMcCallister
So McCallister did show up. I wasn't sure if he would be there since he had issues with Kevin about Jason and the pending vice presidency ticket with the GOP.
Anyway, I am really excited to see the wedding/committment ceremony. The whole family is there.
This seems very daytime soap'ish'
Re: Commitment ceremony
I always expected Kevin and Scotty to keep the ceremony small and intimate. If they wanted to keep it small, you wouldn't have 50-60 extras. As it is, there are about 10 or so extras we've never seen before (who are presumably friends of the couple).
Love the pics. Kevin and Scotty make such a great couple, and I really am heartened that it looks like Kitty is the one officiating (maybe she's eased up on her anti-gay marriage schtick).
And what a groundbreaking storyline for network TV.
Since when do the Walkers do anything small?
Actually I see the guys who were with them at the bar and the family...maybe one or two extra people. Even small an intimate you'd invite your close friends and important co-workers. Jacob and I just had a commitment ceremony in February that was small and private...there were 38 people there...and that doesn't include his side of the family because they wouldn't come.
I wouldn't call this ground breaking. I'm excited and can't wait to watch...but it's not ground breaking. It's been done on TV shows already.
Re: Commitment ceremony
Look at the pictures again. By my account, there are 11 or 12 extras whom we've never seen before. Add in the family, and you have about 20-25 people in attendance.
And I respectfully disagree that this isn't groundbreaking. I believe this is the first time there is a same-sex wedding between two series regulars (that is, major characters) on an hour-long network drama.
If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.
B&S Commitment Ceremony
I'm sorry but I'm underwhelmed. Maybe I'll feel differently after the episode airs.
It's just that to me this all looks awfully ad hoc and casual when viewed in contrast to Kitty & Robert's wedding. Maybe there's a subtle message here that as civil unions aren't quite equal to marriage, commitment ceremonies are not as big a deal as weddings?
Plus, Scotty's doing the bang thing with his hair again and I never liked that. Also, the colors of their suits just aren't flattering on either of them. Draw a contrast to the photos of the two of them in tuxes at whatever (significantly more) upscale episode they will be at shortly.
This might be an upscale wedding in West Virginia but it definitely is not for California. Unless I'm mistaken it looks like less of a shindig than Nora's 60th birthday party was.
Re: Kevin/Scotty
I really think you're drawing messages where there are none to be drawn. I'm overjoyed by these pictures, but it's true I suppose that you can't please everyone.
From the time I heard about the wedding, I expected a small, intimate affair. Was it because same-sex weddings are of lesser importance? Of course not. It was because it seemed in-character for Kevin and Scotty to want to have something more intimate with just family and very close friends. Pomp and circumstance isn't what's important; it's the bringing together of the people closest to them and publicly declaring their decision to be together for the rest of their lives. THAT is what the storyline is about.
For what it's worth...I am very confident that the episode will underscore the equality beteen Kevin/Scotty and a hetero couple like Robert/Kitty. The episode will make it clear, of course, that the law (inequitaby) fails to recognize their union. But in terms of the human element of the commitment between these two men, it will be treated as the same as any other couple's. And that, in my opinion, is the strongest argument one can wage in support of legalizing same-sex marriage.
Don't forget that Greg Berlanti co-wrote this episode. He, along with Robbie Baitz (when he was still around), have really kept Kevin a central character and deserve quite a bit of credit for that. They've pushed the envelope in many ways, andI think this latest storyline continues that trend.
I don't think the fact that
I don't think the fact that the ceremony is an intimate affair or isn't fancy that is the issue, but instead the issue is the contrast b/t Kevin & Scotty's commitment ceremony vs. Kitty & Robert's wedding. I don't doubt Scotty & Kevin's love for one another is any less than Kitty & Robert's, but on the face of how their unions are celebrated, it just looks less important.
I hope Psionycx is correct in predicting that the difference is intentional. However, I think they'll have to spell it out for everyone b/c I doubt the average viewer will get it.
Not looking the part
Plus, Scotty's doing the bang thing with his hair again and I never liked that. Also, the colors of their suits just aren't flattering on either of them.
I feel the same way.
I liked Scotty's hair as it was in the few episodes right before the writers' strike.
Kevin wears better suits to work than he does to his own commitment ceremony.
Sometimes there's no ulterior motive
Less is...well, less. But we'll see
That's the key. In the pictures it looks like "Hurry, Immigration is at the front door we need to get you two hitched PRONTO".
I guess, to me anyway, small in this case seems closeted...hidden.
But maybe it will play better in the storyline. I'm hoping. Perhaps they'll do a Iowa storyline where gay marriage is legal for two hours and they have to throw something together.
Where & when has this been done before?
It's been done on...
Friends, two comedies that tanked 5 episodes in...one was about two dads and the other was about a small town family, sorry...I forget the names (CBS I think, the other was on Fox)...Will and Grace, Without a Trace - ep. It's Raining Men.
Civil Unions and Commitment Cs are not new.
Re: Kevin/Scotty
I disagree that two failed comedies few people remember existing carries the same weight as featuring a same-sex commitment ceremony between two series regulars in a popular ABC drama.
Yes, the concept itself is not new, but the prominence of this storyline is very much a groundbreaking thing. That's a key difference.
And I'm sorry, but I don't agree that it's "closeted" when the wedding is featured as the A plot of the season finale. That is a pretty big deal.
Primetime network Drama - male regular characters - First
I do believe this is a first for two male "regular" characters on a primetime drama on a major network. This isn't being played for laughs and it will be an ongoing storyline. Luke said that "ABC bought and paid for me" and that he would be around for "a long, long time".
I do think given the above parameters, this is a significant and fresh story.
Edit: I would have loved to have seen Kevin and Scotty in tuxes for their wedding too, but I won't complain about it. The formal wear probably had to go back to the "Dirty Sexy Money" set (kidding). LOL For the record, I don't care for Scotty's hairstyle either. I personally prefer a better groomed look (no pun intended).
Truth be told, most male commitment ceremonies I have attended have leaned toward the less formal. There is no bride to make a fuss over a big ceremony/reception, and Kevin isn't a television pundit marrying a U.S. Senator. To compare Kitty & Robert's wedding to this one is apples and oranges from a character/story/visibility point of view.
I am sure it will be a lovely, intimate ceremony.
I seem to remember a wedding
They're doing it in Nora's den?!
How tacky! Boy, the producers sure must be trying to save money on sets! Kitty got the winery and Kevin gets the TV room. Maybe they can pop in the Sarah/Joe sex tape for a little extra fun with the ceremony?
This is California people! At least do it by the pool if you're not going to trek out to the winery!
As for Robert, what's he got to lose at this point? Besides, he's probably glad that this greatly reduced the chances that Kevin will have tie the knot with his brother!
Den...
Yeah, I am not feeling the den either...but then again, I am pretty claustrophobic and having all those people circled around me like that would make me have a panic attack mid-way. even looking at the photo makes me feel some anxiety.
haha...
does justin have a glass of wine in his hand? god, these walkers drink no matter WHAT the occasion is.
I think it's the kid's shoe...
looking at the hi-res photos....
turns out, it is a drink in his hand. haha :-P
doesn't have to be booze
There are such things as non-alcoholic beverages you know.
alright, alright. my bad.
the best damn looking
the best damn looking wedding i have ever seen.
justin is looking HOT!! (as is scotty, kevin, mcallister, maybe not so much saul :)
scotty and kevin look so good together.
and they all lived happily, ever after........ yeah right!!
B&S
It is a small ceremony, just everyone who really matter to them. And I don't care if it is at Nora's house. I would have prefered it if they held it in the garden, but this looks nice too. I love the pictures and I hope the ceremony will be just as beautiful. I agree that Matthew and Luke look great.
Liz, I think that Justin is not drinking wine. There seem to be ice cubes in it. I doubt the Walkers will LET him drink alcohol. What applies to them, does not apply to Justin.... :-D
Yay!
Scotty wants a big, proper "wedding"
I'm even more intrigued now as to why they are holding the wedding at Nora's and it's so small. In tonight's episode Scotty hinted at the fact that he wanted a big wedding surrounded by all the people in his life. That doesn't say small to me.
Kevin: Let's get married for the insurance.
Scotty: I deserve better. No really...I deserve better.
Kevin's delivery of tonights episode was totally daytime soap. Are we really suppose to think that Kevin wouldn't have had the good sense to propose properly? Scotty...I want to marry you because I love you...oh, and an added benefit is that you can get on my insurance. Even a love moron like Kevin would know to ask in a better fashion.
I speculated...
