"Bubba the Love Sponge" sure loves his "fags"

Bubba and company are serious. We can tell from the sunglasses.

Sorry to tinkle in your morning Wheaties, but this kind of has to be addressed.

The editor of Gayagenda.com, James Hipps, sent us a link today to an audio clip of a phonecall he had with syndicated radio host "Bubba the Love Sponge" (on the air) where he took the shock jock to task for using the word "fag" in an advertisement for a party.

After initially snickering at James's complaint (they call him "ma'am") the host starts defending his history of gay-friendly efforts, and then gets incredibly incensed and nasty, eventually calling James "a f*cking pussy", a "fag", and a "queen" for daring to simply suggest that the use of the word could be offensive.

Interestingly, there's a poll on Bubba the Love Sponge's website asking if the word "fag" is offensive, and at present the results have 86% of voters saying "no". I hesitate to direct any traffic to his man-cave, but if you want to vote, here. By the way, WTF is a "love sponge"? Has he really named himself after a decommissioned IUD?

Bullying, rage, and gang mentality. Happy Friday.

Couldn't get it to work

I tried to vote on the site, but couldn't get it to work.  Was it because I was using IE instead of Firefox?

Hmm

Maybe I tripped their "fag sensors" and it's now filtering out any f*cking pussies that try to vote. Actually, I've tweaked the link thanks to a reader's tip - see if it works for you now.

Voting closed, Don't bother

The poll was not even open for a full day.

Not so

Brian fixed the link to go to the homepage, you can find the poll about halfway to the right.

How to Vote!

Go to http://www.btls.com/joomla/index.php

Scroll down a bit. On your right-hand side of the screen there is a box that says "TSS Radio presents..."

There doesn't seem to be a direct URL to the voting box.

Lol! Not that there's any reason you should know this...

...or would need to know, but the sponge isn't an IUD. It's an IVD, so to speak. Just in case anyone has a sister or a friend who's interested, since it's been back on the market for awhile, info on it can be found here:

As for "Bubba, the love sponge" *shudder* yech.

As for the use of "fag," seems to me its level of offensiveness varies directly with how it's used and by whom. I'm sure in the context of that radio show, it was pretty damned offensive.

that was scary

Not in the sense that these people mean harm to any particular community, because I don't think they do, but in the way they seem to feel hatred in general towards anybody who disagrees with them. The rush to name calling and anger makes it clear that there was a lot of pent up anger in them. It's obvious they were angry at somebody they had spoken to at some other time, and they were replaying those tapes in their head, instead of listening to what James was actually saying. The djs were not only offensive and homophobic, but they were irrational and emotional. I would be scared to engage them in casual conversation if I saw them in a social setting.

Wasn't it?

It was one of those hands-off, "Good luck with all THAT!" moments. Kudos to the caller for not being intimidated or getting heated like they did.

Seriously, what do we expect

Seriously, what do we expect from a man who once slaughtered a live pig on air... and the people who actually WANT to listen to him? This troglodyte appeals to the very definition of lowest common denominator in the world.

If it's not offensive, they

If it's not offensive, they wouldn't use it. The appeal of the word for some people is that they can use it to intimidate without any consequence. It's a cheap powertrip for the insecure bully types.

Shock Jock aspirations

The Shock Jock screams and calls him a queen, pussy, woman, ma'am? Calls him the "word police" and "thought police". The callers attack on his education level was unfortunate, it feeds into the class war that these types try to wage with their supposed "blue collar" and "red neck" listeners.

Using the word Fag is patently offensive, especially if it's, as Bountiful suggests: "Not in the sense that these people mean harm to any particular community, because I don't think they do." I just have to say, dear Bountiful, you are completely off base. These people are selfish pigs and are undeserving our concede.

At the very least they don't give a damn about anyone in any community. The idea that one of their listeners would be embolden enough by their fag jokes to bully a kid at school to the point where he commits suicide -wouldn't faze them in the least. The idea that one of the nut jobs who is a fan of this site is encouraged by the fag jokes to take a bat to some luckless persons head tonight -that is the least concern of people like The Love Sponge.

I am sure that they would welcome any free publicity that a controversy would bring, and as a low level radio show, controversy is something to aspire to. All that these people care about is ratings and advertisers. Let me take those issues separately.

To boost ratings they scream like lunatics at some "fag" who calls in to "rant" about "her" gay agenda. I'm sure they were thinking that they couldn't have scripted a better call in. And who is listening to this show anyway? Who are their ratings? Obviously for one, a gay basher. Someone who is driving home with his last pay check after being laid off from his job who is planning on going out that evening and getting drunk and hoping to get into a fight, but to him, getting into a fight means cruising around town until he finds a slight, feminine man walking alone that he can jump and beat to a bloody pulp to release all of his pent up anger. Bigots feed on anger and rage like one of those strange metaphysical aliens on Star Trek who feed on fear. And The Love Sponge is only too happy to take a pay check for feuling their blood thirst.

Advertisers look for numbers. The numbers are reflected in clicks to a web site. The shows producers and sponsors could care less if these are gay clicks or homophobic clicks. The site will get 1,000's of more visits through this poll and that equals more ad revenue. I don't trust polls that are contained in a site like this, they can and will certainly be skewed and stuffed in some way to make the hosts look good. It's a joke to vote on them. Please, please, please take down all links to this site! And do not give these ass holes the acknowledgment of a vote, for or against. This is not a Gallop Poll people!

There is only one thing that the producers, station manager and host will listen to, that is 'CA-CHING." And in todays economy money is everything because advertising is the first thing businesses cut back on and they are all looking for an excuse to cut back.

You need to find out who the station's local sponsors are and where the show is syndicated to and people need to call the sponsors and scream bloody hell at them and threaten a boycott. Derogatory use of the word "fag" should be off limits. And every sponsor should be aware of that by now. Sponcers should be asked why they think the use of the word fag is funny (as a matter of fact that would be my first quesion after asking "are you the CEO?") and they should be told that it promotes gay bashing and asked why their company funds a show that promotes gay bashing.

That's what I was trying to say. My point was that whether or not they consider themselves to be anti-gay, they are anti- people in general. They seem to be the type who will get into a violent emotional state when anybody disagrees with them (which probably helps increase a culture of physical violence). And whether or not they specifically hate gay people, or just the world at large, their behaviour will affect marginalized communities most (including the gay community).
