Behind-the-scenes video of Matthew Mitcham's "Advocate" cover shoot

Gold-winning Aussie diver Matthew Mitcham is the new Advocate cover man, and the mag has posted a series of new interviews and behind-the-scenes videos from his cover shoot.

Below, check out Matthew's take on the controversy surrounding NBC's lack of coverage of Matthew's post-win embrace with his boyfriend. And watch him bounce on a trampoline!

It's outrageous that Matthew doesn't have sponsors

Michael Phelps is rolling in cash and his sponsors are sticking with him after his recent "scandal". Several other athletes have been photographed drunk and sloppy at bars. Here is Matthew, sweet, articulate, motivated and with a interesting Olympic story...and he's being shafted.

It's disgusting.

Mitcham

Having seen a bunch of his interviews, as well as tuning in during NBC's limited coverage of him during the olympics, Matthew Mitcham seems like an extraordinary person. Taking into account his olympic achievements, his good looks, and the way he comes off anytime he's in front of a camera, is it possible to not love him?

i'm confused...

this is sort of on topic, but my dad was telling me once the olympics are over, the atheletes dont need sponsorships/no longer have them. He said the only reasoning for the sponsoring is to get the athlete to the olympics...and the next summer olympics is in....2012? (correct me, i think i am wrong) so Michael phelps doesn't really need those sponsorships, right? (he's swimming in money anyway) i think it's a given he is going to the next event anyway

i dont know. maybe i'm missing something.

Next summer olympics

You are correct (not about being wrong). The next summer olympics will take place in London in 2012, and it will be the third time London has hosted the event.

Sponsors take the pressure off

Imagine having to train for the Olympics while holding down a full time job. You can't give up your job because you have to travel to monthly competitions. You have to pay for a coach. You have to pay for your equipment. You also need to put food on the table...place to live, clothes.

Michael Phelps does need sponsors...arguably, he doesn't need as much as he has, but he's got them. He's set.

Sadly, Matthew has no such luxury. He has to maintain his job and train just to survive.

ah, ok...

I guess i had the impression that the atheletes don't train as hard until maybe a year before the olympics (in this case, 2011)...and THEN the sponsors would roll in and start helping them.

Off topic - Michael Phelps

Off topic - Michael Phelps is, for all his talent and accolades, a fucking douchebag privileged white bitch. I hated the motherfucker over four years ago in Athens, and my hate SKYROCKETED in Beijing.

Back on topic - I am a huge Matthew Mitcham fan, and am shocked that he hasn't got the recognition that he deserves.

Reading between the lines

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I thought I picked up a sense of distaste for Michael Phelps in your post.  Assuming I was correct in my sense of that, what is the cause of the distaste?

Re: Reading between the lines

What can I say about him?

  1. He comes off as a douchebag.
  2. His 14 Olympic gold medals do not make him the greatest Olympian of all time. Most prolific, yes, but not the greatest. Plus, aside from the US and Australia, what else is there in competitive swimming? Virtually NADA. He's winning gold medals in the most shallow of pools.
  3. He has no personality.
  4. He is "straight white American male privilege" at its most blatant.
  5. I hate straight white American male privilege.
  6. I hate straight white American men.
Anyway, I much prefer Matthew Mitcham to Pothead Phelps. Matthew has a more interesting story than Michael, he is more likeable and more personable, and his victory in Beijing (thwarting the hopes of commie China's running the table in diving) was more impressive than any of Pothead Douchebag's eight gold-whoring escapades.

Yikes!

I much prefer Mitcham to Phelps myself.  (Matthew's my dream guy.)  But it's a bit disconcerting to be exposed to such overt racism on a site like AE.  Unfortunately, it doesn't say much for you or your opinions.

YAY! Mitcham finally gets a sponsor

Saw this link on Towleroad to an article on the Aussie Courier-Mail website:

Sponsorship drought breaks for Matthew Mitcham

OLYMPIC gold medallist and gay icon Matthew Mitcham has finally secured the corporate sponsorship deal that has eluded him since the Olympics.

While refusing to reveal the dollar amount of the deal, Mitcham said it would be a "significant" help - without which he would find it difficult to continue the 11-session a week training schedule needed for the 2012 London Games.

Mitcham will represent Telstra at events and product launches, with the company describing him as a "positive role model for all Australians".
