Checking in with Nuke: ATWT's gay storyline a hit

This whole "first gay male kiss in daytime television history" thing certainly is living up to its hype. Let's see where things lie four days after Noah (Jake Silbermann) and Luke (Van Hansis), already lovingly dubbed "Nuke" by the fans, pulled off the groundbreaking lip-lock.

  • The kiss has actually been shown three times, once a day since Friday (the first was the actual kiss, Monday's was the kiss repeated as a different take with the interrupting phone call, and yesterday Luke had a mini-flashback while talking to Maddie). Doesn't look like the show or network are shying away from the same-sex affection.
  • Indeed, despite the haters, the most-played clip of the original kiss (among dozens that fans uploaded) was the #1 Most Viewed Entertainment video on YouTube on Saturday, with over 230,000 hits (not bad for a soap opera!). (Figure quoted by Soap Opera Digest. t/y Wayman for the tip!)
  • Says ATWT Executive Producer Chris Goutman: "We are pleased that so many people are enjoying this storyline. We always strive to create intriguing storylines and relatable characters. Clearly the Luke/Noah story is one that is resonating with people, and is relevant to today's viewers. We will continue to evolve these characters as we'd planned and to provide our viewers with engaging storylines."
  • Van Hansis did a great series of fan Q&As on the ATWT site, and in his profile on SOD he notes that his favorite actor is Sir Ian McKellen (good taste!) and his real middle name, Vanfossen, means "House of the Fox." I'll say!

In terms of actual story, Noah's dad is apparently on to his son's sexuality struggle and is basically using Maddie as a human shield to keep Luke away from him, which is going to come back to hurt Maddie more than anyone. Luke seems keenly aware of this and after the kiss he has been able to put his own emotions aside in the interest of his friends while still being assertive with Noah, which reinforces yet again what a solid character he is and how carefully the writers are treating his journey.

gosh, van's full name is a

gosh, van's full name is a mouthful. eVAN VANfossen HANsis. god, say that 10 times fast.

...i actually cracked up at luke and noah's dad yesterday. his dad was totally all "Tell me about my son!" and luke was all like "nuh-uh, don't you think you're getting anything out of me misterrr" - ah, it was amusing to me.  I like how luke also gave noah the evil eye when he showed up. basically, i love luke. i am sure i have made that obvious. LMAO

i feel really bad for maddie. I know some find her annoying, since she's "in the way", but then again- she has no friggin idea about noah and luke. *sigh* it's a hard life being a soaper...

    Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the shout out!  I'm just sorry the URL wasn't 'live'.  I tried and tried, but didn't know how to make it work.  Guess I'm not as computer savvy as I'd like to think!

On topic, I'm really surprised at the attention this story has recieved, including in the mainstream press and it's been wholly positive.  I'm wondering if the network was expecting this response when they crafted the story.

In terms of story, I heard today that reportedly there's a explosive event the writers have for this story that is just waiting network approval.  I'm assuming that poor Maddie is going to find herself pregnant.  But if it's not that, I wonder what it could be.  Hmm.....

    explosive event...

"I heard today that reportedly there's a explosive event the writers have for this story that is just waiting network approval."

^ so it hasn't even been filmed yet. hmm... if maddie was pregnant now, she would already be showing signs of sickness, etc. now, let's say she does indeed become pregnant. i am then assuming that either noah and luke have an affair while noah is still with maddie ORRRR noah basically avoids luke because he "has to" and stays with maddie.

ugh, this is gonna drive me nuts. i don't want her to get pregnaaannnt. i mean, i would like noah and luke together + being happy, but if she gets pregnant, i can already see the yelling and feel the tension nonstop. *goes to squeeze stress ball*

    I think it's a three-letter word...

    S-E-X.

I can't imagine they would need "network approval" for Maddie to become pregnant (I'm not nearly as opposed to such a story as others are--from a narrative point-of-view, it would tie Noah in more directly with core characters in Oakdale, and it would certainly present a great deal of tension and plotting--but it doesn't make sense from a character-driven point-of-view: although Maddie jumping into the sack with Noah so quickly was out of character, her not using protection seems even less likely).

Instead, I think they want "network approval" to show Luke and Noah making love, at least to the traditional extent that soaps permit. It has to happen eventually, and now that TPTB realize they have a winning couple on their hands, it should happen sooner rather than later.

    Explosive Event

I hope it's not the storyline that AMC backed away from telling with Kevin Sheffield around 1996/97.  He was the out teen who ended up being browbeaten by his moneyed, distant parents (especially his dad).  He was supposed to attempt suicide and be saved by his friend Kelsey Jefferson...but ABC wouldn't let them show/film it...so it ended up killing the storyline where Kevin's mother had a change of heart and he was quickly shuffled into the background before disappearing...much like the other gay character on AMC around that time, Michael Delaney, the high school history teacher.

It seems like Noah might be a candidate for a suicide attempt....though I hope not...as he seems to be under an immense amount of stress...which would allow Maddie to break away from him sympathetically and have Luke ride in to be supportive.  I really do wonder if that's not what is being set up with the arrival of Winston Mayer (after all it is reminiscent of the amazing speech that Opal Cortland gave to Kevin's mom at one point..."Would you rather have a gay son or a dead son?").  We shall see....

    grr

i don't know if it's my computer, but i can't seem to edit my last comment.

anyways, in the midst of my panic attack, i thought "wait a sec..."

if the supposed explosive storyline needs network approval, then i doubt maddie is pregnant. why would they need to approve a pregnancy s/l?

    Ooo the preview looks

Ooo the preview looks wicked! I love how Luke is pushing Noah to be honest about what's happening between them but at the same time he isn't being a bad friend to Maddie. I also think that Van is pushing Jake to be a better actor. There is a marked difference from when he first showed up, in my opinion. I can't wait to see how it all plays out :D.

I think I've got another obsession coming on... John Paul and Craig and now Luke and Noah! Nuke and McDean, what a beautiful combination.
