Covering Cover: the downlow on Bill Duke's new thriller

The film Cover, which opens in limited release this weekend, is a curious film with a marketing campaign that could potentially leave gay communities scratching their heads. While the preview for the movie makes the film out to be a run-of-the-mill tawdry revenge thriller, the film is actually something very different.

Cover is really about the "downlow" lifestyle, and deals extensively with gay men, men who identify as straight but have sex with men, homophobia within African-American religious communities, and much more. Not exactly the kinds of things you'd expect to be wrapped up in what's being marketed as a formulaic murder mystery.

I had the chance to see the film and speak with director Bill Duke, and our article on the film will run upon its release on Friday. And to be honest, the formula of the film and the rather sensationalistic way that the gay element is introduced makes Cover a bit tricky to ... well ... cover.

But as some gay journalists (lesbian writer Jasmyne Cannick, most notably) are discussing the otherwise rather below-the-GAYDAR film, I wanted to run the preview and see what people thought.

Any reactions based on the trailer above? Would you be surprised to learn that it was for a film that is very much about men who have sex with men?

    question...

" and deals extensively with gay men, men who identify as straight but have sex with men..."

^ ok, i am going to try and word this the best i can - - -> If a man ONLY has sex with men, and says he is straight.....then, well....why say they're gay??

i am guessing these "downlow" men just like the sex...and nothing more. they're not really attracted to whoever (men) they're having sex with....sounds weird, i know....but i wonder if this is how they view what they do.....they just like the sex....but don't like men in general. (wow that made 0 sense) haha, ok i suck at wording things online. it's hard to get stuff across online. grrr...

Hm. "Very much about men who have sex with men?"

Well, I can very much HOPE that's what it's about! LOL

So...I'm guessing the guy who welcomes the woman's husband with the "Welcome to the city of brotherly love" has a different interpretation of brotherly love than the object of his desire's WIFE has, huh?

Look forward to the review and one day getting a chance to check it out.

    Speaking of on the DL

...yeah, I've lived life on the DL. Not proud of it. But it's what I had to do to get my "fix." (But, Liz, i was in it for the sex and the men. Go figure.)

Anyway, anyone ever checked out the DL Chronicles? I think I'd like to check it out...just wondering if anyone else had watched the series.

    DL chronicles

I watched the first 4 episodes of the DL chronicles last month and I liked them very much. At first I was afraid of always seeing the same story told again and again but I was surprised that there are different types of DL. Some characters are not good role-models but some learn from their mistakes in the end. I recommend it and my opinion has nothing to do with the sweet cheeks seen in every episode.... yeah...right.

Of course I don't know you but I read your post on the Valentines Romance article last week and enoyed it very much.

I don't know alot about the DL , but after reading your Valentine's post I'm glad for you and yours that you get to live life now on the up and up instead of the DL.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.

Life on the UP & UP

    ...yes...is very much more fulfilling.

I was married twice....but it wasn't until #2 that I realized my true self (bless her heart, she is the most graceful woman I've ever known and I'm fortunate that she's still my friend...) and finally came out. To be WHO I AM instead of hiding. Running. Pretending. (OK that's a much bigger, separate post! LOL)

Anyway, thank you SO much for your comments ... I'm just a regular (?) guy trying to share my story and perhaps connect. So the fact that my story might've resonated with someone is really cool.

    Peace
